- enough batteries for ~50 miles.
- a small (100cc) biodiesel engine running at a fixed and preset RPM connected to a small generator. The engine would be set to run at the peak of it's power curve.
- a small ~10L fuel tank.
- an AC charging circuit
This would allow the driver to run on electric most of the day and charge on the road when needed. One could also use a gasoline engine instead of biodiesel and still see big fuel operating savings since some wall recharging would take place. It would also greatly decrease the number of batteries needed.
This is a really old idea. I saw something like this (on a much larger scale) on an USCG cutter (WLB-389) that was built in 1943. Two diesels -> two generators -> one electric motor. Worked great and it could double as a light ship.
Liquid gasoline only explodes in Hollywood. You can drop a match into it and the match will go out.
Exactly right. Thanks for mentioning it. I once saw an MKSC in the USCG showed us that trick (outside on a windy day). Pretty cool but clearly a "Don't try this at home kids" thing.
RB clearly isn't the "one tool for every job" but for the right job it's great. A while back I worked for a company that needed a few different internal apps that could communicate through an emulated 3270 session and other networked apps. I was asked to put together a Mac client for a fax server and quoted them three weeks for a functioning proto. They were surprised that it could be done so quickly. Normally I would've used CW but thought I'd try out RB for this one. It only took three days and out of fear they would expect the same speed from me for other projects I quietly played Doom for the rest of the time minus three days. Showed them the app and they loved it.
That was real quick. Way too quick. Any guesses on MS' input to Winternals about resolving it? Personally I would've loved watching Best Buy get squeezed but "C'est la Vie".
So, the question is, does MS continue with the law suit started by Winternals against Best Buy and take the chance of pissing out a huge retailer, "quitely" resolve the matter or drop it? On the other hand did the possible payoff make Winternals a better buy?
Back in the day MS Word and Excel were the bomb and sold a ton of Macs. How could one company at one time write such great apps for the Mac while writing such total crap for their own OS?
It makes sense: why upgrade now when you plan on upgrading your hardware for Vista? For better or worse MS drives home a lot of the hardware sales. Now next year should be a much better year.
If and when (a very big if and when) this chip makes it into machines belonging to those in "three letter agencies" I have to imagine this is going to make old-school brute force attacks fashionable again.
Could this chip going "break" the crypto community for a while? WWBSD?
About 42,000 of the public high schools' computers, a little fewer than half, will be able to run the software immediately. But the other 50,000 are too old to handle such new programs and will be weeded out of the system anyway, said Education Commissioner David P. Driscoll .
So 50k machines out and say $300 per seat (IMO way too low but...) equals $15M USD in hardware upgrade costs.
Before people freak clearly some machines would need replacing anyways but how many could be still used if they running something like ubuntu, xubuntu (lighter system requirements than the stock ubuntu) or even pupply gnu/linux? Why not phase in the upgrades and squeak an extra year or two out of the older hardware?
This is not a dig against MS but at the MA elected folks that agreed to this IMO costly "gift".
Why not do the extra 14 years and leave with a paycheck in the bank twice a month for the rest of your life? Oh, and TRICARE too. I know it's hard to deal with LIFERs but that extra paycheck when you get out is so sweet and know all you want to do is get out but still. While I was happy to get out after six myself I sometimes wonder. My dad did 20+ USA and that extra check sometimes came in very handy for the family.
20 is a very, very long time but 30+ years of retirement pay (plus they still do COLAs too?) after that, "backed by the world's largest printing press", could make it worth while. It's a bitch of a choice though with no true, correct answer.
Good luck man and don't go crazy in your short time.
It seems porting Newton OS wouldn't be a great undertaking, would add to an already cool machine some very useful tools and cause almost every former Newton user (still got my somewhere) go wild. Bounus points for a something like xcode. I seriously doubt either would happen but one can dream I guess. Does Apple still even own most of the Newton OS or didn't they sell it to USR->3COM->Palm long ago?
IMO for it's time the Newton was wicked cool and while a bit older is still pretty damn nice even by today's "standards".
This has been done with other similar projects: buy two and one gets donated. So at $200 to $250 per machine in the US with one laptop going to a needy place and you could get it six months sooner than the general market would you buy it?
I say let the profits generated by the initial consumer demand (which should be white hot) be used by the OLPC group and not some ebay sharks*.
* ebay sharks: buy low and sell high on consumer demand. Evil = no. Legal = yes. Moral = yes. I just want OLPC to beat the sharks on this one.
Yes, it is Germanic. I guess I was referring to parts of it's roots not strongly shared with romance languages. The parts that make it different from other Western European tongues.
Because the German language is the best language I've ever studied (but the only Slavic language studied) and IMO for engineering. I wonder if the ability to have incredibly descriptive single words might correlate with their engineering and scientific advances. Because one word is more efficient than a group, something unique to the "West".
Besides, it's cool language. Oh, someone once told me that Worf sounds better in German than English. =)
Considering last weekend Google Video had a full copy (view and download) of "Fear and Loathing" I'd say they're tied. Hell, at one point it was number 35. I'm sure there was somekind of age-check-before-download (there has to be a single, cool word in German for that) to protect the children from such dangerous thoughts.
Maybe we should borrow Canadian border guards to man the US-Mexico border.
I'd be happy with a few Canadian Border Guards teaching the US ones some fucking manners. I have yet to encounter a rude Canadian BG or a polite US one. Can't we just outsource the guarding of the borders to them?
I hate MS Windows as much the next/. reader but RDP is sweet (either the Terminal Server version or XP Pro for a single RDP session server.). I serve up a half dozen RDP sessions daily and at one time over a 768k upstream link and even that is total overkill (if you only serve up the right apps). If you use XP Pro I'm guesing this wall bug should work right out of the box.
BTW, IMO the TC mentioned is a bit pricey (but could be a great solution for the right need, is very cool and the wireless support is a serious bonus) since a standard (and still quite small) TC can be had on ebay for less then $50USD. As for CPU speed, rdp requires very, very little. Think Puppy Linux and rdesktop on a PI works fine. Thin clients are a blast to play with.
If they could just get the price below $200USD it would be great but for what it offers their price is somewhat reasonable.
We're talking about small change here (less than $1k USD), not "business.com" money. If you're serious about wanting the domain then just buy it. This isn't a "red vs. blue pill" issue, there is no rabbit hole, it's a business decision. Make it and move on to building great software.
I'm surprised that the US Govt. hasn't already told ISPs to start keeping a record of DNS requests. While easily bypassed, the average Joe Five Pack user would have no idea it could even be happening. DNS records would really make the first pass of a data mining run a ton easier than starting with something like URL requests.
IMO two of the best indie games ever: Harry the Handsome Executive and the EV series. Sadly both are Mac OS 9.x or less (though "EV Nova" is Mac OS X/WIN compatible).
I know Nintendo stays away from games like GTA:SA and they are one of the greatest game makers ever (Mario is still the king) but it's games like GTA:SA that sell like gasoline at a SUV convention. IMO they'll problems if the hot games are PS3/XBOX only (kinda like the GC).

Yeah, Mr. Bill belongs on the list.

Does anyone know what they were besides what's on the first sign up page?
So, like, they don't know about USENET, right?

Just curious, what model, ram and cpu is in it? If you go through with it start a JE and others can help.
