My last Linux driver issue was finding a 3d driver for a Radeon 7500 about 4 years ago. A distro like SuSE makes it really easy these days. I've installed 9.1 on older machines, high-end new ones, even rather propritary laptops with wireless cards an softmodems without a hitch. Everything works great and I had to do almost nothing (as much or less work than with winows). Meanwhile, a buggy ATI driver (for a mobile 9700) leads my laptop to need some major cpr on win xp. Windows is actually a bit of a pain in terms of drivers. For example, if you want to switch from ati to nvidia video cards(or vice versa) and get the best results you either have to really know your way around the registry or reformat. It sucks.

I mentioned in the PA thread that Lewisham (in London) does this and its a very good and successful program though with much, much less coverage, and in fact allows me to live here. My phone line can't get DSL (in London for Chissake!) and cable's not an option either). Its either this or an expensive ISDN or T1 as I just can't stand 56K.

It allows an area that is underserved by affordable internet connections (even dialup is near 20GBP [40USD] and this is a "low income" area). Not to mention, me, in damn near central london has a phone line that cannot get DSL (and Cable's not availible here either).

Most people who complain about speed, complains about start-up times, which isn't a problem on Linux, since you can start all the applications you need and leave them running forever. There is no need to quit an application - just switch desktops.
This is a laptop, which means you gotta turn it off to take it places to use it to get the value out of it. And unless they've perfected solid state hard drives and have really, really long battery life this is an issue.
Though really, a Linux install doen't take anymore time to boot than windows and app start times are similar, esp compared with the crapware infested machines mom and dad have at home.

You're worried about a help desk worker? That grumpy guy behind the counter at the video store (going off of Hollywood video) has your address, phone, birthdate, names of family members (and b-dates), and SSN (and a simple print screen will print all that data off). This is at the lowest level. Higher up, you get credit card numbers cause we store those. Oh and you *can't* really delete an account, when we "delete" an account, we simply set it to do not rent to. All the data's there. And I'm not quite sure about this, but I think all the customer data for a store (many tens of thousands?) is kept on a local server, probably with minimal ecyption (judging by the age of the system and a couple other factors). Not to mention that that vindictive sales man could just check out a movie on your account and lose it. I'm so glad I quit that job and am getting a "real" job. I think I'll stick with cash for movie transactions though.
