I don't think that it's true that you cannot reason someone out of something they were not reasoned into. I was raised to believe in a certain religion but I was talked out of it (not all at once, mind you). I guess a more accurate thing would be to say that the problem is that these people aren't susceptible to reason in the first place...
I'd say one of the reasons why Apple's market penetration is lower in Europe is because they seem to have taken the US prices, removed the dollar sign from the front, and put the Euro after them...
It's plausible that they are working on such a long term solution right now, but they have discovered this one quickly. This way they can release this unlock right away and then work on a more permanent one instead of having to wait until the long term solution is finished.
They're not doing themselves any favours if the call centre has a huge wait time. At least with e-mail you can send the e-mail and wait for a response, as opposed to sitting there with the phone playing bad hold music on speakerphone or while you hold it in your hand. Though it's nice that they are using (relatively) local reps who no doubt speak English... it's not very helpful if you can't get to one in a reasonable amount of time.
Gah, I was unclear again. My line about Switzerland suing was the joke. I believed he was serious.:-)
And I can read German, actually. I'll translate the relevant part of the "Das Rote Kreuz" section:
The Red Cross
During the founding of the International Committees of the Red Cross, on the Initiative of Henri Dunant and General Dufour, in 1864 Dufour suggested the reversal of the Swiss Cross (Red on White Background) as the emblem.
I am well aware of what Switzerland's flag looks like, but just switching the colours would make it slightly different (hence, derivative work). But this was a joke, which I somehow get the impression you missed.:)
"Two, if the vast majority of people don't care which candidate gets elected and throw their votes away together (unbelievable, but hypothetical"
In the 1990 Ontario provincial election, a lot of people voted New Democrat (NDP) because they were making a protest vote against the Liberal and Conservative parties. The protest vote was enough for the NDP to win.
If they're going to include some of the old titles from SNES for sale, I would gladly pay $5 or $9 for it. Some games - Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Link to the Past, et cetera - were and are hours and hours of great gameplay. And at that price point, I'm sure they'll sell like mad.
Besides, there are always "early adopters" who like to have the first revision of stuff to claim they were first. And the people who don't know or care that it's the new revision (example: my mother).
I used the guide here: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/ and I did get IE working under Fedora Core 4 with WINE installed. A user agent check reported it to be the Windows 98 version of IE6...
When they run out of people to hire in India, or when workers in India are expensive relative to workers in some other country, they'll move on to that other country - it's pretty much as simple as that. The quest for the most effective labour for the lowest price will never end.
As with anything, there are extremists in video games. Yeah, video game extremism is a little less written about than say, religious extremism, but there are some people who take everything to the extreme. And doing anything to the extreme can lead to serious injury or death, be it gaming, drinking, sports, what-have-you...
I'm a Rogers Wireless Customer (no, I won't tell you my phone number:P) and it's a scary thought to see that if somebody stole my phone and ran up a $12 000 bill, they would expect me to pay it.
But what really makes me wonder is why they didn't stop to ask somebody! Sure, you don't want to cut off Ted Rogers' phone, but if you told him about it and said "this is unusual activity in your account - are you sure it's not fraud?" it would probably have been a good idea. Credit card companies (that I can recall) do just that.
Pessimists will say that it will make it more likely for people to switch back to IE, but for people like my parents, now that they've got Firefox, they really like it and are unlikely to go back. However, switching from one to the other leads inevitably to "what does this symbol mean" here and there - and if that's eliminated, then it makes it even easier for me to move people to firefox, because it's not that radically different from what they used to see.

Great, now Switzerland will get involved and claim that the red cross is obviously a derivative work of their flag...
The environment seems pretty Penguin-friendly to me.

Nobody forces you to take your blackberry when you go out, nor do they force you to have it on.

For GAIM functionality in OS X you can try Adium X It doesn't do IRC (by design choice), but the functionality for a lot of protocols is there.
(Also, IIRC, Adium X does use libgaim.)

Well, I consider it unlikely, because Rogers Wireless is a Canadian company, and as far as I know they do not offer cell phone service in the USA. :-)

A friend of mine is starting at RIM in January. Maybe I'll start mailing him the classified ads... :P
