Tax breaks, and selling back power to the utilities (or putting it in the bank for the winter) can offset the costs. But it's probably too early for "compulsory".. not that there might not be a day, sometime in the future, when that actually happens..(never underestimate the desire of one group of people telling others how to live)
PS.. just kidding about paying for my solar panels, I'm gonna sell everything and live on a boat til a hurricane takes me.
Although you are right about there being good cheese made in the US (I am partial to cheddars made in Ca, and Wi).. no matter how you slice it (pun kinda intended) there is no good "American cheese".. period, end of story. That anyone decided that that crap should be called "American cheese" is a damn shame, and blight on the reputation of cheese makers in the US.. I'm sure the roots of that substance, "called" cheese could be traced, and somebody is responsible for naming it that...
Those shameful marketing bastards...
And no one... NO ONE.. no matter how patriotic.. or even just a devils advocate, looking for mod points, is going to defend American cheese. That's how good it is.
Between companies I think there are still many.doc and.xls files sent back and forth. However, PDF is the best way to send a document IMHO, because the recepient doesnt have to have the same version of your office application to veiw it.. Now if you are sending a spreadsheet to have some numbers punched in, PDF isn't going to do it for you.. Personaly, I wouldn't want to use a phone for most of this stuff.. veiwing documents sure.. sending a short email.. sure.. Full fledge word processing and spreadsheet work ???.. I think I can wait to get to a real keyboard.
I had the same problem on an old machine. The solution was to change the CDrom drive. Not saying that it's guarenteed to work on your machine. In my case after various upgrades to other computers I happend to have another CD-Rom player lying around. You also might want to make sure your not doing something like burning to DVD-Iso and trying to read it with a standard Cd-rom dirve.. (It happens). Good luck
Education and experience always have value. My mention of engineers as salesmen was absolutely true. I also knew an engineer that was doing job cost estimating, and one that was a production manager (he was a civil engineer). These people all have highly specialized skills that are in effect not being used like they intended when they went to school. They were all successful in what they were doing (manufacturing) and made decent wages.
I work in whole different environment now, and our director of purchasing got her degree in architechture (we have nothing to do with construction) and she makes excellent wages. As I said, getting a degree guarantees nothing. But I do know that it takes alot of hard work, and says alot about a person that has completed school. These things are more valuable than the "specialty". I don't discourage you from seeking your dreams, but keep your options open because their are many other oportunities that you might even find interesting.
There is no such thing as job security unless maybe your self employeed.. and even then you are at the whim of the market for your goods and services.
Since your in such an optimistic frame of mind, let me tell you something. That you worked hard and went to school, is admirable. That others may have just worked and not went to school is also admirable.. but neither road is a guarantee of anything. This is a fact of life, no matter what your degree was in. I have known lawyers that were unemployed.. I have met many salesmen with engineering degrees.. and I've met managers that didn't finish high school. That's life, and you can be pissed off about it, but you just live it and find your path.
Just one other thing.. you need to expand yourself a bit. There is a lot more to the world than the US, which is why you mistake global for US economy. I've been to Europe, and parts of eastern europe (which is a whole different thing by the way) and if you have any kind of empathy for people, you will be glad to see the economy improve for places like eastern europe.
Libraries are great. My favorite hangout as a kid.
I will say though, that there is a whole money making scam in our education system when it comes to text books. So when I see a story like the parent story, I don't see it as censoring a resource, I see it as someone somewhere sweating their profit margins of the future.
If California passes this, I imagine Microsoft will put people to work on a patch to office, so that you can "save as"(open format)... of course the.doc format will remain the default, making it a pain in the butt to use... but I think this is what will eventually happen. It's just a matter of time. It's possible it may even already be written and they are just waiting until a major development such as this happens.
I have a cup that has 50 green M&Ms and 50 red M&Ms,
and I add 10 green M&Ms and 5 red M&Ms,
green M&Ms are now less then 50%, but that doesn't mean I lost green M&Ms.
Ok..
50 green plus 10 green equals 60
50 red plus 5 red equals 55
How does 60 equal less than 50% of 115 ?
Have you been eating too many blue M&M's ?
I tend to try and overlook alot of the "super tech" computers that TV wants us to beleive us taxpayers supply to our civil servants.. but sometimes it's just too silly. On the show Bones, the 3d holographic display with what looks like rain coming down, is just too much. Maybe a holographic display will look like that someday, but I doubt it.
Change.. it's a lot easier to do whatever you want, whenever you want on your Windows system, without having to enter the Root password all the time.
To.. it's a lot easier for hackers to do whatever they want, whenever they want on your Windows system, without having to enter the Root password all the time.
But regardless of that, I am not constantly having to enter in root passwords on my Linux system. It's not that intrusive really.. at least in my opinion.
Perhaps my favorite plane to fly on. Not many left for passenger service though. When American Airlines had it, the seat layout was more comfortable than KLM's (which I recently flew), That aside, I have always thought that the MD-11 had one really smooth ride. Boeing of course killed it when the bought McDonnell Douglas. I guess most are now Freighters.. I don't think American even uses it now.
One other note on KLM.. I found their in flight service to be excellent on all legs of my trip. Their cityhopper transfer in Amsterdam is a pain in the butt though. Anytime you have to ride a bus to get to your plane just sucks.
He was immediately stuck. He even figured out how to access the shell, but he didn't understand why it kept saying that he needed superuser privileges to continue.
And yet he understood what superuser priviledges were to run Synaptic in the first place ?
This whole situation is what I call "a good mistake". Why ?.. because you have hopefuly taught him the advantages and disadvantages of running as a superuser. I am sure that he now understands the concept of the only way you can truely screw up your Linux system. And surely you have told him why root access is necessary to change things like system settings. So although maybe it was a frightful (but repairable) mistake... good things were learned right ?
I think the implication is that PC and Mac are self absorbed in themselves and each other, and haven't noticed that Linux was there. That's the way I see it. You see it your way of course, and I am sure there are other takes on it.
The truth is of course, that both companies are well aware of Linux. That Apple chose to name the Windows guy "PC" kind of sucks because PC's do run Linux as well as Windows... I suppose it could be intentional, to kill two birds with one stone... but who knows.. I would guess a more accurate thing would have been to have "PC" morph into something different (Linux) although Linux also runs on other hardware (even Apple)
All that aside.. I thought the 2 "commercials" were as good as Apples.
The problem isn't about paying royalties, "commercial" internet stations do this already. It's about having to pay royalties "per listener" which is something standard airwave (and satelite) stations do not have to do. They want to think of internet radio in the same way they think of itunes, instead of thinking of it as "broadcasting" which it really is. It's wrong period.
What good can come from a 10 year old kid surfing the net ?
There is nothing wrong with teaching kids how to use a computer.. however, using the internet is not that complicated. I could teach pretty much anybody in a day tops (most should only take a couple hours). You act like children will be years behind their peers if they don't start as babies.
There are plenty of other useful things kids can learn on a computer, that more than likely are overlooked as it is when kids are on the internet. And these things actually take longer to learn. More kids know how to setup a page on Myspace than how to use a spreadsheet. Which do you think is better preparation for a job ?
The problem is, that just like TV, and movies, parents use the internet as a babysitter. and when bad things happen, it's the internets fault. Again there is no reason for children to be on the internet especially alone. With young adults, it's just like letting them drive.. if they act responsible enough then it's a judgement call... and it's a crap shoot even then.
Actually the esiest way to do it, would be to have a second drive. You could use existing Windows drives, put in a second drive.. install Ubuntu (if that's the way they go) on that, and grub (or lilo.. are there still lilo distros ?) will handle the dual boot.
If it's just a mater of changing distros, most installers will easily overwrite the other distro without resorting to commandline.
I think a more pratical choice than a bare drive option is a dual boot option with say.. XP and Ubuntu. It is far more complicated to install Windows after Linux, than it is to first install Windows and then install Linux. If you have that dual boot setup then to overwrite either Windows or Ubuntu with another Linux distro is fairly trivial... but if you got a drive with only Ubuntu on it, and decided you wanted to dual-boot with Windows you would have to wipe everything, create a Windows partition, install Windows, and then your Ubuntu or whatever other distro you wanted.
Of course this dual-boot thing would not only cost extra (for Windows) but would require more time and labor in setting up the drive and installing the second OS.. But I think it would have a larger market than the "bare drive" option.
Honestly, with Linux, it is entirely possible that a major or even minor release could have very large implications and Dell could be left holding the bag with it's customers.
So Vista just works with every Dell ever sold ?... how about a one year old Dell ?
Tax breaks, and selling back power to the utilities (or putting it in the bank for the winter) can offset the costs. The code looks easy enough to experiment with your own artwork, so I look forward to seeing how much better you can do.
Just ripe for the pickin.. for political comments at many different angles.. but too damn easy.
Those shameful marketing bastards...

Just come back for it like John Titor did for his IBM 5100 computer.

Violence is fine when it's halfway around the world, and you don't have to see it.
