  1. Re:Sure its a great RPG.... on Review: Jade Empire · · Score: 1

Morrowind was my favorite game of all time. Does anyone know if there are any plans for a sequel? I thought Bethseda (sp?) went out of business and no one picked up the development portion of their company. They just finished selling off whatever was in stock, etc. I must have spent more than 100 hours on this game, but that was because I tried to explore the whole world and join as many factions as I could. I am also amazed that they fit their whole world onto a single CD, when many games these days are 4 disks or more (or a DVD now).

Ultima 6 & 7 were very good games too. I think the Ultima series lost it when they tried to go "first-person shooter" with Ultima 8. That ruined it for me.

I'm not a programmer, but doesn't DirectX take care of a lot of the various H/W driver issues on a PC? I can remember when games specifically required Sound Blaster compatable and an S3 video card. But that was 6-8 years ago. Now it seems they only require a certain processor speed and some recent version of Windows with DirectX. Doesn't that mean the developers only need to write code to interface with DirectX, which then interfaces with the H/W? Just curious.

For those of you who watch Jay Leno and the "Jay Walking" portion, you would probably be very surprised by just how much the general public at large doesn't know. I would assume the show probably edits the segment to the best/dumbest people, but I still believe there is a lot of truth (as oppsoed to being completely scripted) in just how dumb the average person really is. Now, ask them something about Britney Spears or some new reality TV show, and I am sure they would be able to talk you to death. Ask them about the $2 bill and watch the look of puzzlement on their face. Very sad...

  8. Re:Buy of the shelf on Home Theatre PC Guide · · Score: 1

Just out of curiousity, I picked up one of the 80GB Toshibas for just under $400 (US). It seems to do everything just fine -- right out of the box, including recording/editing/duping to the built-in DVD-R/RW drive. It even has a Time Slip feature so you can pause or rewind live TV. The only thing missing is a channel guide. In this respect, it is like the old VCR's where you have to enter the information manually or use VCR+ codes. It even has a IR extender that you can place in front of your cable box and program the recorder to change the channels automatically.

If you are really only interested in a basic off-the-shelf HD/DVD recorder for under $500 (in this case, under $400), I would suggest looking into the Toshiba models. My unit was manufactured in late 2003, so hopefully it won't be included in the upcoming "Broadcast Flags" either.

How or where can I find out if the Toshiba RD-XS32 recorder (most of them built in 2004) will have this DRM technology? I don't want to assume that because it is no longer being manufactured it doesn't have restrictions in place. In the owner's manual, it breifly mentions the inability to duplicate certain copy-protected DVD's but does not mention anything about HDD to DVD restrictions. Thanks for any insight.

Yes, Civilization-CTP (Call to Power) was a direct rip-off of CIV (according to the courts at least) and the company had to payback to the CIV franchise, something like $5 for each copy it sold! Then they came out with CTP II (but dropped the Civilization name). Personally, I thought this game was pretty good, as it had some improvements that I would like to see in CIV (monorail, underwater and cloud cities, some very interesting military units). I also really liked the ability to change the building projects for multiple cities at the same time -- vs. city by city. It was very convenient to select "all cities" and change them to a specific military unit if you were suddenly attacked or when it became available, for instance.

I think at $100 a cable, they are probably WAY overpriced, but hopefully that will come down soon.
