I don't think it'll find much success, because it won't be as 'cool' as a regular cigarette. Much of th e reason people start to smoke (at the young age) is the ability to flip the ligher (in a cool way), light the cigarette (in a cool way), and exhale the smoke - in a cool way, looking like a suave motherfucker.
1) How do you see cost of living going down here? It's not going to go down because more people are getting poor. And for the near future, if one looks hard enough, it will be always possible to find programers outside of USA for cheaper than inside.
2) Great, so maybe in a 100 years it will happen. Great solution!
Me personally, I'm one of the (few) lucky ones to have a job and do just enough real-time production support so it's not in danger of being outsourced. I'm also single, young, right out of college and without too much financial burden - just mere 15K in student loans.
But how can you say 'just retrain' to someone with a wife and 3 kids, in their 40's, who has paid off college and grad school tuition, has mortgage, etc, etc.. More importantly.. you don't see anything wrong with this picture? These people invested their whole lives, basically, in becoming programmers, and (not all, but a lot) of them are great at it. WHY would you want them to retrain?
How does this get modded up? This is such a tired, old, BULLSHIT argument that's been around for ages!
The real problem with the above argument is that this is the first time this happens to educated, white collar professionals. These people have been through at least four years of college, have spent fortunes educating themselves on their chosen career (in this case, programming), and it's not as easy as you're making it sound for anyone in this position to re-train.
What this leads to is the ultimate destruction of the middle class. America will be 1% extremely rich with all power, and the rest will be just really, really poor.
Of course, you might argue that with free trade ultimately, this will work itself out as Indians get richer and it won't make economic sense anymore to send jobs to India as nobody there will work for peanuts anymore. But guess what.. that just means the jobs will be moved to another country, even poorer than India! The world will never be perfect. It's not some economic model.
I wish I could end this on an optimistic note, but unfortunately, I can't.
I would use it if it were customizeable, i.e.: you could make it work with any application, and define your own rules for that application. As it stands now, I don't use AIM, MS Office, Outlook Express, or Internet Explorer - anything from that list.
Also, I'm wondering if it will display googleads on the desktop. I don't mind the occasional ads in Gmail, but HELL NO, I won't have anything even remotely resembling ads on my desktop!
This sounds great but unfortunately, rarely works in the real world. Most people create documents for others to view, and in today's corporate environment, that means.doc format. As simple as that.

That's awesome, except to me, that's uhh.. useless? The whole purpose of a PORTABLE music player is to take with you anywhere.. so which computers/OS's you can plug it to, shouldn't really matter! The idea behind a portable music player is to load it ONCE at home/work/somewhere - one place - and then take it with you and listen to it everywhere.
And besides... the fact that it locks up and then you have to bang it against the wall for 10 minutes to get it going outweighs any positive things I've read in this article/comments by a TON. I'll stick to my iPod, thank you very much.
The reason I think you're a troll is because it's the most likely scenario.
At best, you're an uninformed, ignorant person who likes to run their mouth about things you have no idea about. It's obvious anybody who at least looked at the MAP of the region and saw Israel completely surrounded by enemies can outnumber them by millions, would NOT compare them to Microsoft.
At worst, you're a fanatic who knows all that, but ignores the facts because you're convinced in you being right.
Most likely, you're just a troll looking for attention. Regardless of which scenario this actually is, I don't think I want to waste any more time on this.
.. I would DEFINITELY do it. I mean, when I was in Vegas, I've seen people waste that and more in a single night at the roulette table. And not really give a shit afterwards. If I was in that position financially, I would definitely spend that on space tourism.
Reminds me of a Russian politician named Zhirinovsky, who besides being batshit insane, is a very funny guy. Last year he warned USA not to fuck with Iraq or Russia, and he something along the lines of 'if you fuck with us, we have scientists who can bend the Earth's axis so America will be flooded.'
I don't think they ever went away, really. Actually there was a period in the mid-90's, I think 1995, when mainstream gaming media was loudly asking 'Is this the death of RPGs as we know it?!'. But then Diablo came out, even though it wasn't really an RPG, it still brought back the interest in the genre. And since Might and Magic 6 came out, every year there's been a quality RPG (best ones always coming from Bioware/Black Isle) and the genre is, in some sense, I think even stronger than the golden years (late '80's - early 90's)
The EFF reported that the Vivendi/Blizzard vs. the good guys case has been decided, and it doesn't look good.
Thanks for letting us know who the good guys are! I can never figure out who's right or wrong myself, and I like it when I can count on Slashdot telling me that.
... they obviously don't know the state of software in Russia. Russia is where uh, my friends go to get their software. CD's with enterprise application suites, worth tens of thousands dollars, just lay there on the flea market, available for $1-2. All the latest games and personal apps too, of course - that goes without saying. I think Windows XP was available there long before it's official release in USA. So yeah, good luck Microsoft.
... I have to agree with him that an artist is never satisfied with his art and never thinks it's perfect. Same with programming - when I make a program, unless it's a really trivial one, I never think of it as 'finished' and always strive to add more features, improve the UI, etc...
Jesus Christ people, it was a JOKE. I'd think the 'suave motherfucker' part would give it away.

*unzips pants, starts whacking it*
I agree with you, but I think it's good that rich suburban 15 year olds get into the game. The more suckers start playing poker, the better.
... kill me now, please!

There's 0 documents about Badnarik, but 96 mentions of Cobb.
Hmm...

Yes, I did just compare Microsoft to Israel and Mozilla to Palestine. Politics aside, I think their positions are similar

I've been waiting for this for a long time! Now waiting for Eclipse to release a working plugin (well, there's this ,but it's not that great.

What does your sig do?
:-)
It encourages you to learn C.
Disoourage from it, more likely
I had my free account upgraded for about two months now.. but then again, I created my account in '97 so I guess they do go in chronological order.
Especially those fjords in Africa :)
