What about the people who are unknowingly sending spam from their cracked computers? Is this basically saying that there is a 6-digit bounty for the grandmother who doesn't know enough to keep her computer secure?
A tip-off will not lead to immediate punishment for spamming... it will most likely lead to that person being sued and the state would have to PROVE that he's a spammer... otherwise, no bounty.
I bet they are hoping that by giving away the product for free to people who would never buy it anyway, they get droves of people who are experienced at running their system who will eventually buy it for larger projects 'cause that's the system they know how to use.
And what exactly is wrong with this scenario? Sybase IS a company, and they have to make a profit... And they're doing something nice while they're at it, too.
By the way, for those of you who are about to cry out 'But Sybase is worse than _____________ ', sometimes there are situations where it doesn't matter. An overwhelming majority of financial companies use Sybase, and will not hire you unless you have experience in it, no matter how good you are with Oracle.
I agree. Real hackers never use those crappy modern languages like C and PL/1. Any coding competition that does not require assembly language use and going through memory dumps is retarded, and no self-respecting real hacker should attend.
From my experience of 4 years on campus, I noticed that generally, you have enough time for two of the following three:
1) Do your school work (that includes all those cool programming projects you want to do) 2) Have a social life (talk to people, and I don't mean IRC by 'talk', play sports, party, etc.. ) 3) Play computer games
Geeks usually do 1 & 3, while jocks 2 & 3... now, I tried to eliminate 3 and almost succeeded - unfortunately, this revelation didn't occur to me until the last year - and I really believe that this is the right way to go.
Of course, there's people who somehow have enough time to do anything they want - I remember reading an interview with one of the people who helped create the modern networking, I forgot his name, and he said that while he was an undergrad at MIT, he had a full time job 12 midnight to 8 AM, went t to class/did research in the lab during the day, and was a president of his fraternity. That was in the 60's. To this day, the answer to the question 'When the hell did he sleep?' still eludes him:-)
Just disconnect from the Internet while playing the game... of course, it doesn't work for games that require the connection, but I think (hope) there are others like me who still play single player games.
Will they switch? Sure they will. People switch because they're lemmings. Look at MSN. I guarantee most of the people I know on MSN only got it because somebody else they knew was on it, who got it because somebody else was on it...
So most people went on the IM service because someone they knew was on it. I fail to see what's wrong with this. What's the point of using an IM service if you have no one to talk to?
"Hey look at me, I'm so cool! I'm using OpenGnuInstantLinuxBSDMessengerGPL... if there was only anyone else on so I could test this 'send message' functionality.. someone... anyone... please?!
Planescape Torment was not such a great game. Now, let me just say I'm not trolling and hear me out.
Sure, it was an amazing STORY. The characters were brilliant, great dialog, etc... but was it FUN to play? Not really. In the end, I abandoned the game and just went to some site to read what happens... boring battle system, bad skill system, apathetic gameplay, uninteresting monsters (a real shame... I have 4 Planescape Monster Manuals in paperback and there are some amazing monters in there).. you said it yourself: you were glued to the monitor, reading the text and ignoring everything else.
And that, I think, is the real reason the game didn't do so well. The REAL Hamlet of D&D RPG's, imho, has to be Baldur's Gate series games... which didn't have such an amazingly elaborate script, but the gameplay was so well thought-out and balanced that it was just so much FUN you couldn't stop playing.

I think every time Claria is mentioned, it should be mentioned on the same page - hell, in the same sentence that Claria IS Gator, and their company name, names of everyone connected to the company, their significant others, and descendants down to the fifth generation, should be recorded in human history as worthless scum and vilified forever.

Look at me, I'm so great, I don't download games, I (and "gamers like me") am the greatest because of that!
When the whole article is written in this tone, it automatically makes me want to run to IRC and download all the latest games, just to spite the author.

I think I'm gonna take it easy on the coffee and get back to work, before I take this any further.

I see no other way for this to work, really.

If a parent makes it 'required reading' for their non-geek children, it still does the job.

I've never written a Java program, never more than glanced over reference books about it
Do I need to add more?
Once someone learns to use a computer with {Win/Mac/Linux OS}, they will likely never change.

This is such an interesting topic ... I was thinking of asking exactly the same question. 17 replies? C'mon people!!!
... Verizon, which by far provides the best service in the US, has this feature:

Obviously it it has stats and they increase over time, it HAS to be a roleplaying game ... [/sarcasm]
It's good to know some people still know the difference between real RPG's and all the FF's/Diablos over there.
