  1. How it should be done.... on Do Reviews Still Serve a Purpose? · · Score: 2, Informative

.. is the way the Retro Gamer magazine articles on "Why you must play ..........."

What they do is gve a detailed break down of the what gameplay elements are used in the game, and how those work to enhance the gaming experience and make it an enjoyable experience. Also they give some history of how they game came to be and the situation of the gaming market it was released into.

As the games mentioned are not being sold in retail stores, there is no $$$ coercion factor that you get with current games.

I've tried several of the games and have discovered some worthwhile divertions of my time.

    Cheers

And dont forget Machinae Supremacy, especially their cover of Great Gianna Sisters title tune. Must admit the Visa Roster doing a cappella covers of Internation Karate was different but amusing. I confess I've been getting hold of the recording of the original SID tunes, as I played lots of the games on the ol' C64. Many good tunes & memories :) I wish that I could have gone to some of the retro gaming events in England to see some of these bands performing live, and one of them which had a light show setup by Jeff Minter (aka YAK), would have been a blast.

  10. Nintendo gives developers what they want on Gates Pegs Nintendo, Not Sony, as Toughest Competition · · Score: 1

The reasons that Nintendo is doing so well IMO is:
    1 - Market share.
Be it real or perceived, and yes you can say duh now :)

    2 - Ease of development.
Nothing new or exciting in the hardware for the Wii over the GC. While the PS3 is making developers work hard just to get a handle on the new hardware. And the Xbox360 I'm not so sure about.

    3 - Developer License Costs.

This I think is the sleeper argument. As previously Nintendo screwed this up when the N64 v PS1 generation came out, as they demanded more money from the developers to allow them to make games for their console, so most of them went to make PS1 games as it was cheaper, plus there was the advantage of manufacturing costs of cd versus cartridges.

Nintendo was arrogant then, but I believe they've learnt their lesson this time. Seems to be that Sony has taken a page out of Nintendos book and look to be repeating their mistake. But it remains to be seen if Sony will have an ace developer to make some exclusive games that gamers want, like Nintendo had Rare.

  11. No turbografix for Australians on New PS3, Wii, 360 Downloadables Announced · · Score: 2, Interesting

But you can get the games by changing your region to UK and then download. But the consumer shouldnt have to do that.

  12. The reason Doom, Q1 and Q2 were popular.. on Why Bother With Episodic Games? · · Score: 1

... was because there was a huge modding community that got to muck about and create their own content which was mostly shared for FREE!

That is the sort of episodic content that I like. Okay, there maybe quality control issues but until you've tasted sour, you won't know how sweet the good stuff is.

I've stopped listening to radio, and just cd's, or mp3s.
I dont go to the movies, I borrow dvd's off friends.
I've stopped reading the newspaper and get just surf the web sites that have news. And block those ads that support them.
I've put a no-junk mail sticker on my mail box.
And thankfully in the city of canberra, roadside advertising is banned.
The only way I find out about new products is through word of mouth from my friends, which I tend to observe how well it works for them for a while before I'll try it.

How many copies of a game get traded in as the days/weeks/months pass since the release date. As that is more of an indicator of wether the game sucks or is worth holding onto, IMO. Few copies of the game in the 2nd hand section gets my attention and gets me asking questions to the EB staff.

My buying habits are erratic, sometime I go by reviews, or word of mouth, or a continuing franchise that I've bought previous versions of. But wether I keep hold of a game or trade it in is based on wether I enjoyed playing the game.
