It's a percentage/false-economy thing, I'd bet. If I've got $1,000 to throw at software, I'm probably not going to be too bothered by a 5% difference. But with $100 being the upper end of "cheap" software, I might be a bit more concerned with the 50% difference.
If I'm performing racing modifications for my car, I'll probably tear out the back seats to reduce weight. But if I've got a large yacht, am I going to throw a few deck chairs overboard to improve performance and fuel economy? Probably not.
Just build your store out of whatever Meijer uses. I can barely get my phone to work when I'm in their stores. (Which is even funnier when you consider the Meijer Find-It iPhone app that isn't terribly useful, mostly because of the aforementioned problem.)
As far as Amazon goes, they are so distributed and have such massive resources that I doubt a DDOS attack would have much effect. I might be wrong, but there is a world of difference between Amazon and public relations sites like visa.com and mastercard.com.
Yeah, if you really want to take down Amazon, you have to offer a $99 XBox 360.
Yup. I'm still trying to find a way to keep the cats off the damn counters. They're smart enough to realize that it isn't, "Oh, bad things happen if we go on the counters," but rather, "Oh, bad things happen if that guy sees us get on the counters". Clever little bastards. I need to invest in some motion-activated toys that will scare the piss out of them if they jump up there.
I know people like that. There's one at the office... he was excited to find an old motorola 9-pin serial to RJ-45 adapter used to program certain 2-way radios. Why was this a big deal? He also had a USB-serial device used for old blackberrys. He figured he'd be able to use his ipod as a network attached storage. The missing link... a male-male usb adapter. Luckily... he had a USB hub he wasn't using. Game-set-match! (True story.)
Wow. How long did it take the fire department to get the blaze under control?
You should get him one of these. Tell him it's that new "broadband over power lines" stuff.
I've got a leather golf glove (probably about 15 years old) that works just as well as my fingers on a capacitive touch screen. Maybe I just need a pair of those.
Probably not, but "Customers" and "People That Have Reason To Access Their Web-Sites" aren't identical sets. Birthday/Christmas shopping for relatives, journalists, etc.
This. If you're doing heavy photo manipulation, virtualization isn't for you. Just put all your data on a separate drive so if you need to wipe/reinstall the OS, you won't lose anything important. Then you can also use the Previous Versions feature in Windows 7 to roll back any data files you accidentally hose.
Just put a nice 30kV bias on the wire and let the problem take care of itself. Any time I hear about attempted power line theft, the people who were involved are charcoal.
My stepdaughter had a pet rabbit (horrible pets, btw)...
I wouldn't go that far. They are horrible pets for children, simply because of stark personality incompatibilities, but I have two rabbits that are both extremely friendly. A lot of people think they're just getting a cat with long ears, when in fact the differences are much deeper. Rabbits are definitely higher maintenance, as they tend to be somewhat messy, and can develop destructive habits (digging, chewing) if not supervised closely and kept away from hazards. And while rabbits are often quite friendly and playful, they are definitely not cuddly. My rabbits love to come over and get a head rub, and socialize with the cats just fine, but try to pick them up and carry them around, and they'll just get pissed off. If these details don't bother you, then a rabbit can make a very good pet. If you weren't expecting this, then you'll probably end up like the people from whom I just got my second rabbit.
On the plus side, they're cheap to feed. Hay, fresh greens, and pellets cost very little compared to food made for carnivores like cats and dogs. I'm still surprised whenever I get a huge bag of bulk pellets and it costs less than $2, and a large bale of hay can last months.
Same here. I have a 48SX (two, actually), a 48G, a 48GX, a 49G, and a 50G. The 48SX sits on my desk full time. The keyboard on the 50g sucks - both the feel, and especially the layout. Not to mention the battery life. Just give me a 48SX with a RAM card, and I can program circles around what can be done on a TI or Casio. All the whizz-bang hardware upgrades won't change the fact that I can do more with a sophisticated programming environment and well-designed UI. (Loads of extra RAM is still nice, of course.)
I'm just grateful it wasn't "ATM Machine's". I probably would have had an aneurysm. I already feel like I need a shower just from typing it for the sake of example.
What's wrong with that, it's not as if they're being misleading. That "wasted" energy has to go somewhere and if it's being used to heat up your home in the winter, then it's hardly "wasted."
I came to a similar conclusion a while back. I live in Michigan, where it's either light outside until after 9:00 PM, or cold enough to freeze your balls off (and occasionally both).
During the warm parts of the year, you don't need to run the lamps as much, and during the cold parts of the year, a little extra heat from the lamps is quite welcome. It just doesn't make financial or environmental sense to use anything but incandescent bulbs for household interior lighting where I live. If the price of LED lighting comes down I might be open to trying it, but the toxic waste from CFLs just isn't worth the slight electrical savings (not to mention the corresponding increase in propane usage for heating).
My thoughts exactly. If there's any time to prefer being pragmatic over being on the leading edge, it's when you're launching live humans into outer space. I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone in the work flow is still using an HP 41C extensively.

Of course, to pronounce them correctly, I would have to rip out your tongue.

Even as somebody that owns an iPhone, this was actually my first thought too. I don't have any major problems with AT&T in my area, so whatever.
And they'll just threaten to countersue for hacking/invading their network with your personal phone.

Now for Exhibit B, have a look at this: Dog Can't Get Out
And if there's enough CGI explosions and shaky-cam photography, nobody will even notice! Brilliant!
Crazy Taxi just isn't Crazy Taxi without "Hey honey, take me to Pizza Hut!" over top of "TENNNNNNN IN TWEEEEEENTYYYYYY TENNNNNNNN..."

How exactly are vision-impaired visitors supposed to read this scrolling message?
Funny enough, I keep a Psion 5 on my desk for those odd occasions when I need a portable serial terminal.

Apparently you've never met my rabbits.
