As a former Linux user and current Mac user with concerns over Apple's direction, this is the most exciting Linux news I've heard in a while. I realise it's probably a ways off, but if I could run eg. Reason on Ubuntu and there was a nice *step style WM (with a real maximize button!) I could be sold:)
I love my 360, don't get me wrong. It came out on top this generation and has provided me with tons of enjoyment, as well as providing by far the most sane experience on any console since pretty-much ever. But the XBox dashboard is about as consumer-oriented as a TV stuck to receive only a shopping channel. A shopping channel for MARTIANS.
And yet, I've received complaints from customers buying laptops (not what you'd call sleekbooks or netbooks or ultrabooks or ANY kind of book) that expected it to include an optical drive, which was absent. "Not all laptops have a DVD drive", I guess everything old is new again in portable computing:)
Back to the slashmydots' comment though, I think you're missing the mark a little on the demographics that tablets are aimed at. Typing? Printing? USB storage? These were the kinds of things that tablet users already begrudged about their computing experience. And I use my tablet as my PRIMARY web browser. I only browse a "real" browser if I happen to be doing "real" computing on my MacBook.
Actually, you still need to buy the content. So whilst I agree that Doom 3 is not the most fantastic game, I question your understanding of the topic at hand.
The summary ascribes far more intelligence than is present in people who buy "rock bottom" priced computers. They're only more intelligent than the person they sell it on to.
I appreciate that you feel wronged, but I don't see how turning away ANY customer who wishes to make a purchase is a good idea. Consider that pirates statistically buy more music than any of your other customers. As an aside, if I even witnessed the kind of confrontation you described in any store, that store would be on my OWN blacklist. That might be worth considering as well.
Reminds me of a short story from the Stories of Ibis collection. A salesman impressed a group of colleagues in a nursing home that a new robot had passed the nursing exam.
Actually, they ARE starting the walk-in on OSX. And I'm speaking from the POV of someone who loves OSX and Apple laptops but hates their mobile offerings. They're starting with a "default to no" to install apps which they haven't signed.
If I'd known that I wasn't "really" using my Android tablet, I'd've quit months ago! Surely, I wouldn't have wasted time reading all those news articles, posting all my/. comments from it, or all my forum posts, or GOD FORBID connect it to my 360 with Smartglass. I need to quit being a sissy and start using my laptop to look for a new apartment and keep in touch with friends and family, because my current tablet CLEARLY isn't up to the task.
Thanks for the heads up, Steve, I can get back to the rest of my life now!
I think there's something to that. Look at the original XBox. It was effectively an old (even on release date) PC running a locked-down console version of Windows. They didn't mention Windows at all and the device did well enough to carry a new division forward, easily better than ANY pass that MS has made at the phone market.
In all seriousness, if I needed a serious WM on Linux, KDE was my first choice. GNOME is just confused, in my opinion. It's like it went more OSX than OSX (and I'm even an OSX user).
I was wondering about this. I work in a callcentre so I've had a lot of practice with desk assessments. The Company keeps a supply of stacking trays designed to raise monitors where necessary. I'm uncertain how a standing desk is the only solution.
This seems like the response most reflecting my own. I went through a phase of using Thunderbird and Firefox as a pretend "Mozilla suite" on Linux when that was my platform. Though, I think it was probably the memory issues that turned me off most. I hear those things are fixed, but I can't think of a good reason to go back to a heavyweight like Firefox from Chrome, particularly in the post-PC world.
App developer reads on Slashdot about how the Ouya will bomb because of the Android pirate demon, wants some free publicity, cites piracy as reason for batshit policy on app I've never even heard of.

You should totally aks them again.

Microsoft. It's for Microsoft.
I wish I had mod points for you, AC, I really do.

The summaries are complete turd of late, never mind the articles. Sort something out.
There, saved you some time!

OMG you guys. Don't fall for the government smokescreen! [/conspiracy]
I've never seen so many Playbooks sold as we have recently. Why? Because the price is rock bottom. This IS the end of RIM in its current guise.

... writes fiction, sadly has a blog.
Phonesat 1 will post Instagrammed photos of Earth and tweets about how lonely it is. Phonesat 2 will retweet them.

As noted before, that's kinda the point.
We live in an age when these questions should be obsolete. Data without backups is data that wants to die.
They all scream for ice cream.
