Yet another reason why the US is the greatest nation on gods green earth. (to borrow from Michael Medved).
Many try to counter that freedom of speech only applies to speaking about the government. The problem with this is that under a capitalist society corporations and institutions can wield far more power over a person than government. In many places "Big Brother" came true, it just turned out to be corporations, not government.
couple of thoughts about this.
1) This reminds me of "manifest destiny", and we all know how that turned out (for those who got ran over in the process).
2)this is the positive part - a LOT of technology and advancements get made due to military technology. Advancements that spill over into all areas from agriculture to zoology. Sometimes the only way to move foreward is due to this, case in point countries like Japan and Korea are so advanced today because they had to be rebuilt. If Iraq ever gets its act together imagine how advanced it will be after its rebuilt!
doomed to fail because all they have to do is either a)in the case of active-x ones - claim that use of their web site constitutes consent to install and/or b)bury it in tiny print of EULA legalize that few if any read anyway.
It does however, show government finally listening to the people as I've said for some time that if we did the same thing to them we'd be branded a hacker, fined or imprisoned but they do it to us everyday (or try).
and if we were truly drones (or in a socialist society) then this so called "lost productivity" would matter. But we aren't, we go to work to provide for the enjoyment and needs of OUR lives NOT the collective.
this trademark stuff is assanine. "Tiger" is a word, plain and simple and as such it shouldn't be allowed to be used as a trademark anyway. Now if the team "Tigers" or TigerDirect were to also release an operating system and called it Tiger there'd be a problem, but as it stands there is no problem as there's clearly a difference between the three.
Just as stupid as MSFT claiming "dows" and "Office" is a trademark those should never ever have been allowed as well. Make up a word of ones own instead.
These are kind of lawyers that make the rest of them the butt of jokes and disdain.
>>First, it is big media recognizing that it's time to listen -- and do more than listen: Let the people speak.
Nonsense! Radio has been letting the people speak forever. That's the entire point of talk radio.
What would have been genius is if the radio station had real podcasting aka download! As it stands here they are just obtaining free stuff from us with NOTHING back - I repeat NOTHING back.
Doesn't surprise me at all. Big corporate wigs don't know any better. Their kind of thinking are the ones that were responsible for stupid "for hire" ads I used to see in the 90s that said "wanted programmer with a degree in Java" or other such stupid things that didn't exist. It takes time for old school to retire/die/get fired and the new to take over so idiocy like that goes away finally.
>>How about we really do something with technology to help these people? Like setting them up with running water, electricity, a house that doesn't leak? Maybe get them enough food or decent medical care... It seems like a waste to invest so much in giving out low cost computers to someone at risk of starving to death the next day or is at high risk of deadly illnesses.
Because that would require people actually do something like, oh I don't know perhaps travel there and help organizations themselves and have their own life changed in the process!
"Quote: "Linux is free, but the support for it is not.""
oh and Windows support is free?
I serviced small business for a couple years in the late 90s and I wish Linux was then where it was today as I could have helped solve a lot of those companies problems. I saw a huge problem with "piracy" in those business' (these are "real" small biz, sole proprieter, partnership, etc...). Some of the biz's had proprietory software too where support for it would cost several thousand dollars a year so they usually opted to NOT have the support and instead hire me whenever they had an issue. 9/10 they were hardware related issues anyway so all their "software" support would be doing is telling them to plug and unplug things and so on thereby wasteing their time and paying big bucks for it.
"indy" bands are everywhere already! they are the local bands that play for your county fairs, street dances, bars, many already have private albums for sale at their concerts. All they have to do from there is turn their music into mp3/mp4 whatever they want heck they can even DRM it if they want its not difficult. What is harder is marketing to hit the so called "big time" bands hire agents who try to arrange their performances to be seen by somebody in the labels. That last step is the step they really may not need thanks to the internet. If they or their agent start marketing their music on web sites word could possibly spread. It would be slower than labels can spread the word ya because labels cram it down our throats - we as the listener really have absolutely no choice in the matter unless we just don't turn our radios on. BUT their chance of success could be much higher on their own this way.
So in a nutshell do what they already do but add internet marketing. If the "indy" label download sites such as mp3tunes.com, audiolunchbox and others do some real advertising to draw people then those methods could add greatly to their success rate.
>>So why do we have to pass new laws. Why not just enforce the existing laws?
Because Democrats suffer from "do something" syndrome. I think the best legislative session would be one where NOTHING new happens.
gawd what a stupid article. there's 5 minutes of my life I'm not getting back.

as if we needed anymore reasons to switch to Linux or Mac.
University math requirements have risen dramatically this year and I think there's a correlation between the two.
Wordperfect office should be considered.
the problem is it will kill the in-game economy. I've given up on MMORG's altogether already, too much of a money and time sink.
palmpilots would make more sense with sd cards for sound. The IP "issues" is assanine though. Bunch of hype over a nonexistant problem.
bring on the impact! knock us back a few centuries again.
and the early RCC thought they had all those "heretical other" gospels destroyed! Ha!

boy fundies would hate this. space exloration throws incredible monkey wrenches in their gears.
just more anti-geek propaganda. There's never been a "tv anxiety disorder" or "football anxiety disorder"

there's several companies selling Laptop's either w/out an OS or with a version of Linux. Just get one of those, my next laptop will be one like that.
slippery slope this is. accept this and how long until your blog is regulated? this must always always always be watched out for.
umm that always happens with Open Source.
ya here in Nebraska we just got runnin water an the injun wars es finly ovr!
