Windows kicks Linux's ass in terms of usability and GUI refinements
See I would regard this as an understatement. For most common desktop usage windows splatter linux all over the pavement. On my PC I can load openOffice under windows 10 seconds faster than under linux, and thats still a good 10 secs slower than word which is a lot better (yes i know it technically loads when you sign on or whatever but really who cares?)
Based on some of the comments you guys have I can either assume that most people here have either never used windows (in which case they beleive its still as shoddy as win3.1) or have never used linux (but they want to look clever so spout drivel about it)
Anyway to return to the point nothing in linux land looks even as remotely eye pleasing as winXP and although macOSX has a perrrty scrolly thing it does get old sooner or later and you notice how substandard the rest of OS looks.
Right that was very purgative..thank you for your time:)
Rowling spent years polishing the HP books? Damn she must have a crappy editor then.
On a slightly off-topic note its disgusting the JK Rowling got an honarary degree from Edinburgh this year. It makes my Edinburgh degree seem somehow tainted/
feel free to add your own ideas to the comments.
My own idea is that whoever posted this piece of shit ought to be put out of their misery before they ruin their life by spending their entire fortune on penile enhancement drugs.
I bet the subscribers are well glad they got this stroy early!
Its depatable if AI outperforms us in very limited domains which are tailor made for heavy computations (chess AIs can compete against strong human opposition but in go AIs can barely beat amateurs)
I think its a somewhat naive view that AI will ever develop to the point that it outperforms humans at arbitrary and varied tasks.
i have one of the one step down models (the mp3 playing ones) but have also used the n-gage and despite them being pretty clunky the side talking thing is just a stupid internet craze...you can use them like normal phones and it works fine..honestly
still i guess a more ergonomic design should be encouraged
1. Log on to slashdot
2. Pretend i make enough money to actually afford a copy of windows XP pro and norton
3. Play on collective community fears about internet worms
4. Make bogus claims on alleged damage caused
5. Revel in kudos received from embittered slashdot community
6. ???
7. Profit
ive installed windows thousands of times (literally) in the most unsevure environment and have never had it rendered unusable before even installing. I suggest you stay away from those ropey sites offerening downloads of free XXX pron if i were you.
No you fool!!! they can succeed just on free operating systems. And only people clever enough to compile from the source are allowed to use it anyway. Oh yeah and windows media player sucks so anyone which uses that isnt allowed to have it either.
In fact me and my friend keith are just going to keep it for ourselves. Keith had a girlfriend once
meh, im tired of these..ive got such and such which plays ogg. Your missing the point. Most people dont know what the hell ogg is.
Your "Ogg player" is described thusly on the product webpage:- "The first MP3 digital audio computer built to manage, broadcast, and expand your digital music world. With Neuros, your digital music experience keeps evolving"
Why? Because only a hand full of people use ogg, its part of the mental snobbery and one upmanship that is ridiculously prevalent in this so called "Community". Why dont you guys quite being such dorks and join the real world? When you hand over that wicked track on cdr to your mate down the pub theyre not gonna think "Wow! this guys smart, he's using a free (as in speech) audio format, what a swell guy!" Rather theyre gonna think, "oh crap i hate it when that guy whinges on about that younixks thingy i'll just smile and bin the cdr without bothering to find out how to play it"
precisely, since there are ample free as in beers encoders/decoders around any competing standard needs to offer something pretty special in order to negate the advantage of an ENORMOUS userbase.
I would imagine that there are less people who have heard of ogg vorbis than have heard of slashdot. All people do by using this format is irritate the people they exchange files with.
I realise that free (as in speech) sound and video formats are a good thing but it seems that certain formats, particularly mp3 are now more or less ubiqoutous (sp??). I mean how many people pick up their 128meg solid state ogg player in the morning??
I had a looka t this and being a maths graduate as of 2 weeks on wednesday I can say it looks pretty useless. A list of definitions isn't what makes a good textbook, what is needed is good worked examples and a sensible set of excercises which can demonstrate how to use the definitions in various contexts. Devoting 4 pages to calculus just really won't cut it, even first year maths undergrads generally buy a copy of Adams which is a book on calculus which is A4 sized and some 600-700 pages in length. That doesnt really go into multivariate calculus either.
Making a textbook i imagine must be hard work, putting together the necesary set of examples and excercises as well as adding a little verbosity to make the definitions, theorems and proofs a little more understandable will probably take months or even years even for an experienced maths graduate.
I guess thats why only maths professors find the time to do it:)
This is the most stupid ideas I've ever heard! A search engine should rank pages based on how good the content is not on what technology or standards it does/doesnt apply to.
Are you joking? I dont care how many different computers youve administered in whatever high brow organisations you can't deny the fact that the user interface in linux isnt as responsive as windows..and that applies to ALL of them even the lightweight ones.
Even in fvwm dragging a window is sluggish (and it doesnt even display the contents whilst dragging)
Has anyone used this distro or linux music software in general. Ive been toying with the idea of dual booting for a while now but was worried about the state of linux music software.
Any of you guys know if there are linux alternatives of the following software which i cant do without but also more importantly how they compare.
Cooledit
Cubase
Buzz
Im more concerned about the audio side than midi since i record everything live but its always nice to have the have the option to add a little strings or whatever for colour.
i hope that post was supposed to be sarcastic or something and that your not really suggesting imposing draconian measures as to what students are/are not allowed to do with/install on their computers..
Loser!
this guys got a point..what you want to do is look like a mean mutha.
Do what i do:
Get some tattoos..well only 1 but its pretty big:)
A scattering of facial piercing never goes astray
Work out
Get urself some some real long hair and a beard
I followed the above steps and can happily say ive never been mugged in my life. They'll go and mug that scrawny little gimp in thick glasses clutching a laptop case in front of his chest and with penguin pin badges all over him
Just a thought but if I wanted to protect a password protected asset wouldn't it be useful to leak some false password as common knowledge...possibly setting the system up to alert a squad of soldiers with plenty o guns and bullets to come running if it was ever entered.

We have a fair idea of how the "hardware" of the human brain works but the connectionist architecture isn't getting us closer to the holy grail.
I personally think the human race will have wiped itself out before we have a machine that can pass the total turing test.

Most disabled people cant even play the organ weak i know
Danny Carey every time. If you havent heard it check out his drum solo in 46&2
:)
I think its interesting that there are images called bs01.jp and bs02.jpg on that homepage.
Perhaps you should rename the html file to bs101.html just to make it really obvious.
Oh and if your living hand to mouth your really gonna have a hard time paying for all the bandwidth the posting on slashdot is going to use.
you missed the step 4.5)?????

youve forgotten how annoying having x-billion formats is though. I hate having to codec hunt to find everything..why not standardize?
The sad fact is Im too lazy not unable.
