Actually there is a difference between bars and pubs...pubs are usually fasioned in the style of old public houses and are quieter with lots of tables for general chit char and socialising. Bars tend to be kind of a hybrid between clubs and pubs with more expensive drinks..few seats (usually booths where present), much more trendy decor and loud music with the emphasis on hooking up.

Here in edinburgh there are over 100 pubs/bars within half a mile of my flat (the result of some recce missions before a serious pub crawl)

I agree but to do that you really need to pay people to moderate. I mean sure in games with keyboard chat you can filter words but people will still be able to use infinite variations of f4GG0t!!! or whatever, and i cant see any practical automated solution to voice chats at all.

And of course if people are paid to moderate that cost is going to be bourne by the users. Maybe theres a big enough base of users willing to pay for moderation to set up a smaller select network but Im not sure that this would be possible with consoles especially xbox.
Its just a shame that people can't play without this kind of pointless rubbish. So my suggestion is that for voice games just turn the volume off on the chat..or failing that play with no sound at all and put some tunes on. The text chat is usually easier to ignore seeing as its restricted to a small consistent screen area.

I dont think it has anything to do with age or professional paranoia..after all a 14 yo has all the time in the world to read as many articles as they want about securing a box. I think the problem a lot of people have with classifying it as a science is that you cant take previously discovered theorems and manipulate them to give more theorems. In maths and physics this is elementary and even in chemistry and biology it is a prime source of "NEW" ideas. In something like economics (or equally psychology, geographys etc) this isnt the case.

To me this creates a need for a "social science" classification, for all the things that use a scientific method but arent actually a science

Well i fail to see how you think a robot wouldnt be able to judge a safety shot! Firstly a robot is perfectly aware of exactly the angle required to make a shot either its own or an opponents and further could effortlessly caulculate the margin of error. Some simple adjustment to a standard mini-max algorithm would make this possible.

  23. Re:Simpler eh? on Deep Green - A Pool Playing Robot? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I would have to disagree with you here. Even without mastering spin and such like given a high enough degree of accuracy it is likely that a very good execution plan could be calculated.

I think the real issue here is firstly getting the vision system coupled with the actual physical movement in an accurate enough manner.

In some ways this game is much smaller than chess, although you may say that there are infinite variations and whatnot you forget that we already understand the physics of the pool table incredibly well. Rather than searching forward like in chess a pool playing robot will have the luxury to decide which ball it wants to pot and then extrpolate back using simple newtonian mechanics.

I think their 5 year estimate to get a competitive pool playing machine is a pretty good guestimate. I know from experience that robots are notoriously difficult to get doing things consistently (an undergrad project was building a vision system which could get a robot arm to guide a ball on a string through s small loop) and i think that getting the whole thing consistent is probably going to be the main source of work.

I appreciate that youve been playing for 20 years and have invested a lot of time in it but remember that machines attack the problem in different ways. I have been solving differential equations for 10 years for well over 2 hours per day but its pretty straightforward to write a program which can solve them faster and more accurately.
