I figured this when I had a serious ant problem in my office. Living on the tropics we have these things we call sugar ants. Tiny hyper fast ants, that appear on anything and everything with half a calorie in it.
Now one day I put my Sony MDR-whatever DJ headphones on in the office, to come to a realization that I was ithching like hell. Itching and tickling. I only used cooling, then getting the ants out, never any chemicals (I do not use chemicals when possible, I am simply scared of them. I better eat 200000 instances of bacteria then breathe in one sip of chemical fume, be it desinfectant, window cleaning liquid, or bug killer spray.

Well, not necessarily (even though at home I have one, so more text fits on it), but at work the standard 17" will do. Then what? Oh well, I hate mice, and being a rather tall individual I cannot stand regular keyboards - too tight. Besides knowing how crappy the the keyboards and mice were the last Fortune 10 gave to the employees, even if I was ok with mice and regular keyboards I would differ to use any given one. Pickiness? Well, when you spend 10+ hours at a computer (did I say 16+ ? ), and I am sure a lot of guys here do, you want the best input devices. Anyway, this kind of workplace sharing is completely incompatible with me. So does systems engineering, or even installing an unknown feature into an environment (e.g. reading docs, and try until it works kinda stuff).
Put it into any coating, it comes back to saving money to these corporations. It has nothing to do with you being well changing workstations.
Just my 2c.
damn I would do anything, even write a book on/. to avoid finishing that project I am late with:(
I recently looked into the issue as well, as I realized that I had 4+ computers on all the time just to give me firewalling, NAS, PBX (Asterisk for Voip and a landline - no landline here natively)....
To cut the story short I was looking for something that could remedy multiple of these issuea and I stumbled upon Linksys's (Cisco's) NSLU2 network attached storage device.
I will be honest, the device interests me because it is an extremely cheap Linux box, so take my recommendation with a pinch of salt if you wish.
I heard it was an OK NAS: you can attach 2 USB devices ower 100Mbit ethernet.
I am planning on doing the following on the box: NAS: kinda obvious, but with a twist: I need a low power nas, so probably USB stick (4/8 gig) Asterisk (1 line, 6 extensions, 1 main IAX trunk to my always on server) Print server: 1 printer, nothing extra... we will see, if I print I have a machine on anyway so not cruicial X10 control: plug in a module and run Heyu, act as PBX enabled security (maybe with a CAM too) Soho gateway : OK, we will see that, maybe I just leave my openwrt'd WRT54G for that.... I am about to eliminate all the wireless crap from my home...
Originally the NSLU was ordered to give NFS mounted storage to my openwrt and my old IPAQ, but as I am looking more and more into it, I can see that the opportunities are endless..
Then again, if you want a fast hardcore raid enabled sata/scsi nas, look somewhere else. If you want some hacking fun, get an NSLO, $82 from Amazon, and you can get lucky on ebay too.....
I have to admit that I am talking out of my 'back' my device is still in the mail, but I am excited and thought I would share it because it came up....
Other tip: you should look at ebay, I saw $1000+ NAS devices for under $300... you might get lucky there as well.
It also crossed my mind that they actually may have quality PC's that do not crap out as fast as you r regular brand. Not that pcs are dying on me every day, but I have a nice collection of dead parts (monitors, fans, harddisks and evena totally fried laptop).
I know that an overheating in a 2+ year old PC would make some people just buy a new PC ($50 down, $25 a month etc..), instead actually looking into the box to see that the fan crapped out because it is bogged down by dust, cat/dog/pubic hair.
Also if they actually use desktop machines vs laptops, repairs are much more possible without throwing the whole thing away, also less accidents happen to desktops than to laptops for the simple reason of not being carried around risky places.....
Those who will prefer quality will not go with the automated web 2 ran by users. And even if they do you will have work fixing what they do.
I do not even want to get into the Web 2 discussion and that wikis, blogs and sandboxes will write the web (or whatever crap).
Why ?
Easy: today's advanced word processors and html editors generate such a mess from a simple text, that I simply do not believe that all the web crap will do better with the user generated content.
I do consulting for several people and companies, and the thrash that comes out from their advanced tools need constant fixing.
If you think I am talking about something very complicated and parsing errors slow down for a second.
Give a simple input box with e.g. tinymce (good tool if you can use it) to the regular user, and see how many double lines, special characters, and tings like table into table into table and b b b b b b b b strong strong like text is going to come out of it. Sure it will be readable, and only slightly ugly, and fill 100000 pages with it, then see how nice your parsers work on it and how indexing software throws up seeing it.....
But then again, give open office to your wife, ask her to create a 1 page text with simple formatting, then look at the source and decide if you would put it on your company website.
WEB 2 on the other hand is about social networking, and intercommunication..... there is a lot of programming there that needs to be done along with networking and telephony. I really do not think IT is going to vanish because of that.
I think a good direction to go is to learn networking with some web-able language... definitely javascript and html/dhtml, but then again I do not think C Java or other heavier languages will disappear just because everyone is going to use web tools.
But then again Web 2 is like cloud for me. There is no specification, there is not a strict definition either. What I see makes me think that finally instead of 20 different plugins we will have something standard compliant, but still there is flash, java applets, silverlight, and 20 other things, and still ou cannot make a page to look the same in Moz IE Opera and safari without pissing blood. I am hoping standard communication channels, and some companies are on the right track. Gizmo using SIP and Jabber, but then again, I need a Pidgin (gaim) to connect to MSN Gtalk, Ytalk, AIM, instead of just using a yabber client and an aggregator, and there is the like of SKype, grat service, closed protocol, so good luck integrating it into your PBX (yeah there is chanskype, it works sometimes too , great to run X on your PBX too , and then there is email - like 2000 of them daily, of which 1950 is spam, and the rest has 5 meg.doc attachments, and 5megapixel images, because users do not know how to resize ,
What do I think ? I think IT will be needed even more. A different IT maybe for many.
hmm.... people cannot use their telephones and remote controls, damn even technical personnel would not read the docs and break stuff left and right , now you fear that a cloud expression "web 2" will wipe IT out ,
I heard the same BS about linux and all the devices which are pouring out with it installed....I heard "point and click firewalls and storage devices will take your job".... hmm like 8 years ago. Since then I have seen them on shelves unplugged, on shelves blinking but unplugged otherwise, and got paid a lot to configure them for the companies who wanted a little bit more than let tcp 80 out, and close tcp 25 down.
But then again, we will see..... I personally secretly hope that computers disappear, and I can go and work as a divemaster or a car mechanic, or do something other than looking at multiple monitors for a living.........
OK, no trolling, I am a happy XBOX owner and play on live.
BUT: first they should take care of the noise the 360 produces. For me TV/Video watching is completely ruined when you have such a loud fan noise.
It is an incredible gaming machine, but I better use my 5+ year old DVD player than the 360 because the noise concerns.
And before you tell me to crank up the volume: every movie has silent/low volume scenes, and usually the ones when there is important conversation or other dramatic parts..... now that is when I do not want to hear a changing pitch of fan noise.
Other question a HDTV tuner... OK... if I have HDTV I have a tuner already. If it is for recording: I doubt MS is going to give questionable cool features like ad skip with it, so better a TIVO.
Dunno, maybe this game machine as an entertainment center idea does not get to me. I would better shove a minimac/mini pc into the hifi stand and than I have all the freedom to burn, record, show pix, etc....
This is not right, I would never drive a vehicle like that.
With all the electronics in nowadays' vehicles I am more and more leaning into using an ignition/engine management system I can have full control of. Think carburated, but that barely passes the emission tests, but megasquirt is one system like that.
I understand that a lot of electronics are for your safety and your convenience, but they also put you in the hands of the dealer and with this latest little addition the cops/government,. or even the wrong people. How long until someone figures how to shut your vehicle down and use it to steal your car ?
Also with all the computers onboard, you hear horror stories of people being charged fortunes over a fried circuit board, that got wet.
As much I like technology I fear it when it takes control over my life. Just think how shitty your brakes become when your ignition is off, or how hard the steering gets. Now picture someone (or on-star) shutting your electronics when you are on your favourite mountain serpentine just before your favourite hairpin......
OK, I am paranoid. I even hated the idea of ABS until an idiot pulled out in front of me on a wet/slimy road (rain + leaves) and based on my previous experiences I was almost sure that a crash would happen. Then I felt the brake engaging and disengaging with every little slide so many times it was impossible to count. (probably even sense without the adrenaline rush of the "before crash" senses) Since then I respect the system (well for that I also needed to see one live on a car that has a good one).....
So I accept (or learn to accept) technology that saves your butt, makes your drive safer, but someone switching on and off stuff on your car from an office (or who knows where) just scares the hell out of me.
I would never put or want more electronics in a car than a 92-95 Japanese or German car. Think 95 BMW, 92 Nissan, or 95 Mazda. And I know most of the car people say that even that is overkill, and just throw all the stuff out.....
1. I do not agree with a company locking a phone to a provider, however:
2. A company has the right to say: you are buying this phone to use with AT&T, if you mess with it and brick it you breach our contract and you lose your warranty.....
just don't buy the stupid thing if you do not want ATT.... sooooo simple...
It wasn't really specified in your question where the locations are.
While google maps have satellite images all over the planet (and maps for many places) the time I tried both, Microsoft totally lacked any images of the country I live in now (Costa Rica).
Since at the time I was working on a site that needed local satellite maps and some from other Central American countries I had to select google maps.
Your mileage might vary, and in the last year MS maps might have changed.
Just my 2c, if you are US only then this comment does not concern you (unless you decide to outsource/etc all in a sudden).

OK, probably it is then a coincidence. Also MS never updates anything without letting you know.
If you go to forums, you can see that things stopped working for many people after they updated.
Whether the update added support to a controller or not, it did some mess on some consoles it seems, as people have problems.
Not really with the connection, but e.g you cannot search player games only ranked, and other weird stuff.

Congratulations on your intelligent comment.
Multiple forums are full of people who have trouble with certain games after the update. I Only play 2 games online, and one totally got useless after the update. Suddenly all the players have a problem with their net,
Oh, btw being able to list only ranked mathces, and not player matches (while be able to play perfectly). is yes uhmm... a clear indication of a network ploblem on my end you retarded troll.

Oh well... I for one do not care about halo, but having the rainy season on us with comlete darkness at 6 makes me spend more time playing on live.
Now that said, I know that they recently updated consoles, and I suspect that it had to do something with the new big release...
Sad thing is: since then people have lag issues, connection issues all over the place..
All MS support says is: restart your modem and your router, and call support (2 hours waiting according to many).
No, I am not middle aged and my life is not video games, but I like to play multiplayer stuff RS and GRAW mostly.
I really hope the device helps you and just connects when you have connection problems in multiplayer games, or when the hardcore tech advises you to restart your DSL modem for the 42nd time, even though ALL GAMES work, but one....
Games do not stress me. Work does. Dealing with support does....... anyhow the idea could not work in FPS too well..... you need tension there....
unless they make me fall in an epileptic shock (in the game) when my hand is sweating... or make my character run into a corner, cry ans shiver.... or dunno....
Or maybe I am, but in these rather screwed up times I consider twice what I wear at an airport.
I even once looked at the mirror, and was wearing my favourite "obey" brand t-shirt, that features 4 pictures (4 shades of the same figure) wearing a hat with a red start, slightly resembling Che Guevara....
I pictured myself answering the "purpose of your visit" then, "so who is the communist guy on your shirt and why are you wearing it when you enter our country " question... so I changed to a polo-shirt......
Some shit strapped to a shirt with a wire looking out is trouble at ANY airport, US on not.... it is an idiotic act of someone either too "rebel", or just immature to look at news and understand them....
Oh yeah, not answering the question about the wire hanging from your shirt is a clear provocation, and it is just plain luck the person wasn't shot.....
1. user accessible battery 2. network independence 3. SDK or at least a scripting language ported with access to all functions, camera sms, and even be able to script what happens if XY calls.,,,
Then I would consider one. Why ?
Well I went with the e65 Nokia, a very nice (I thought) business phone with a close to iPhone price tag (at least here)
but nokia lately puts crap out
-Nokia dropped voice dial tags (seems in all 3rd gen S60 - you cannot record them, but now there is voice recognition that does not work at all - saying Cristina would turn the phone off, "home" would turn the radio off, while "Carlos" would dial "Dindi SIP number" )
-Nokia does not support his phone... nokia software does not support it 100%, and there is no firmware - freezes, crashes glitches, problems.. e.g. pressing 1 long to dial voice mail would disable the whole numeric pad till a reboot.....
If iPhone had something like this, I would complain.... but still that battery and AT&T just kept me back !
I am sure the kids who buy the most are not the ones who have the best grades. Inventing something like this at someone else's store is not acceptable because it will kill sales.
He is not a marketing expert there and this special promo is definitely not a good promo to be honest.....
just my 2c...
ps: yes I also felt like making a lot of changes... free internet for nice chicks, let's not answer the phone if the boss is nasty, and pay 50% back to the customer in cash if our service sucks.... all kinds of nice ideas, which were all bad for the business.....
So how old was this educational marketing genius ? That will suck on his resume, unless his next application is in education...
I am not sure what I was using as a system when I started using google, but I am so very sure it wasn't a microsoft product I could make a bet on it. It must have been BeOs, OS/2 or linux.... really not sure which, but not Windows....
MS wanted THEIR SEARCH, and THEIR BROWSER only. Naturally windows comes with IE, and we all know where all misspelled words and other searches take you.... and it is not google and never was....
It is like saying, if MS did not exist there would not be Amazon or Ebay, or Video games.....
ahha...... those few million OS/2 and Mac and UNIX users did not exist//// OMG !! This stupidity got me mad...
I had a little copyright issue with a Yahoo Wideget.... (lifted a background image by accident:O ) When I got the notification it was written in the letter, that I have the write to file a counter notification in case I felt I was wrongfully notified (or for whatever else of a reason)
This came from Yahoo legal, and I felt it was presented in a very correct way. Maybe others do not do that, or people do not read these papers... not sure...

Hmm, besides the DRM I've read, that it is not that easy to just drop a document on it, and converter tools are less than perfect.
Would be nice just to have a device that reads html and PDF without the DRM crap.

Then again, if you want a fast hardcore raid enabled sata/scsi nas, look somewhere else. If you want some hacking fun, get an NSLO, $82 from Amazon, and you can get lucky on ebay too
I have to admit that I am talking out of my 'back' my device is still in the mail, but I am excited and thought I would share it because it came up
Other tip: you should look at ebay, I saw $1000+ NAS devices for under $300... you might get lucky there as well.
Agreed.
.....
Also if they actually use desktop machines vs laptops, repairs are much more possible without throwing the whole thing away, also less accidents happen to desktops than to laptops for the simple reason of not being carried around risky places
Those who will prefer quality will not go with the automated web 2 ran by users. And even if they do you will have work fixing what they do.
.....
..... there is a lot of programming there that needs to be done along with networking and telephony. I really do not think IT is going to vanish because of that.
... definitely javascript and html/dhtml, but then again I do not think C Java or other heavier languages will disappear just because everyone is going to use web tools.
,and there is the like of SKype, grat service, closed protocol, so good luck integrating it into your PBX (yeah there is chanskype, it works sometimes too , great to run X on your PBX too , and then there is email - like 2000 of them daily, of which 1950 is spam, and the rest has 5 meg .doc attachments, and 5megapixel images, because users do not know how to resize ,
,damn even technical personnel would not read the docs and break stuff left and right , now you fear that a cloud expression "web 2" will wipe IT out ,
....I heard "point and click firewalls and storage devices will take your job" .... hmm like 8 years ago. Since then I have seen them on shelves unplugged, on shelves blinking but unplugged otherwise, and got paid a lot to configure them for the companies who wanted a little bit more than let tcp 80 out, and close tcp 25 down.
..... I personally secretly hope that computers disappear, and I can go and work as a divemaster or a car mechanic, or do something other than looking at multiple monitors for a living .........
Sure it will be readable, and only slightly ugly, and fill 100000 pages with it, then see how nice your parsers work on it and how indexing software throws up seeing it
But then again, give open office to your wife, ask her to create a 1 page text with simple formatting, then look at the source and decide if you would put it on your company website.
WEB 2 on the other hand is about social networking, and intercommunication
I think a good direction to go is to learn networking with some web-able language
Gizmo using SIP and Jabber, but then again, I need a Pidgin (gaim) to connect to MSN Gtalk, Ytalk, AIM, instead of just using a yabber client and an aggregator
What do I think ? I think IT will be needed even more. A different IT maybe for many.
hmm.... people cannot use their telephones and remote controls
I heard the same BS about linux and all the devices which are pouring out with it installed
But then again, we will see
OK, no trolling, I am a happy XBOX owner and play on live.
... OK ... if I have HDTV I have a tuner already. If it is for recording: I doubt MS is going to give questionable cool features like ad skip with it, so better a TIVO.
....
Other question a HDTV tuner
Dunno, maybe this game machine as an entertainment center idea does not get to me. I would better shove a minimac/mini pc into the hifi stand and than I have all the freedom to burn, record, show pix, etc
1. I do not agree with a company locking a phone to a provider, however:
.....
.... sooooo simple ...
2. A company has the right to say: you are buying this phone to use with AT&T, if you mess with it and brick it you breach our contract and you lose your warranty
just don't buy the stupid thing if you do not want ATT
I think people like you (of course anonymous) would find a perfect place at one of these support places.
... a clear indication of a network ploblem on my end you retarded troll.
Congratulations on your intelligent comment.
Multiple forums are full of people who have trouble with certain games after the update. I Only play 2 games online, and one totally got useless after the update. Suddenly all the players have a problem with their net,
Oh, btw being able to list only ranked mathces, and not player matches (while be able to play perfectly). is yes uhmm
Oh well ...
I really hope the device helps you and just connects when you have connection problems in multiplayer games, or when the hardcore tech advises you to restart your DSL modem for the 42nd time, even though ALL GAMES work, but one ....
....
... or make my character run into a corner, cry ans shiver .... or dunno ....
...
Games do not stress me. Work does. Dealing with support does....... anyhow the idea could not work in FPS too well..... you need tension there
unless they make me fall in an epileptic shock (in the game) when my hand is sweating
kind of a stupid idea IMO
Or maybe I am, but in these rather screwed up times I consider twice what I wear at an airport.
....
... so I changed to a polo-shirt ......
.... it is an idiotic act of someone either too "rebel", or just immature to look at news and understand them ....
.....
I even once looked at the mirror, and was wearing my favourite "obey" brand t-shirt, that features 4 pictures (4 shades of the same figure)
wearing a hat with a red start, slightly resembling Che Guevara
I pictured myself answering the "purpose of your visit" then, "so who is the communist guy on your shirt and why are you wearing it when you enter our country " question
Some shit strapped to a shirt with a wire looking out is trouble at ANY airport, US on not
Oh yeah, not answering the question about the wire hanging from your shirt is a clear provocation, and it is just plain luck the person wasn't shot
1. user accessible battery
2. network independence
-Nokia does not support his phone
If iPhone had something like this, I would complain
What is so surprising? Really.
...
... free internet for nice chicks, let's not answer the phone if the boss is nasty, and pay 50% back to the customer in cash if our service sucks .... all kinds of nice ideas, which were all bad for the business .....
I am sure the kids who buy the most are not the ones who have the best grades. Inventing something like this at someone else's store is not acceptable because it will kill sales.
He is not a marketing expert there and this special promo is definitely not a good promo to be honest.....
just my 2c
ps: yes I also felt like making a lot of changes
So how old was this educational marketing genius ? That will suck on his resume, unless his next application is in education...
I am not sure what I was using as a system when I started using google, but I am so very sure it wasn't a microsoft product I could make a bet on it. .... really not sure which, but not Windows....
.... and it is not google and never was ....
.....
...... those few million OS/2 and Mac and UNIX users did not exist //// OMG !! This stupidity got me mad ...
It must have been BeOs, OS/2 or linux
MS wanted THEIR SEARCH, and THEIR BROWSER only. Naturally windows comes with IE, and we all know where all misspelled words and other searches take you
It is like saying, if MS did not exist there would not be Amazon or Ebay, or Video games
ahha
I had a little copyright issue with a Yahoo Wideget .... (lifted a background image by accident:O )
... not sure ...
When I got the notification it was written in the letter, that I have the write to file a counter notification in case I felt I was wrongfully notified (or for whatever else of a reason)
This came from Yahoo legal, and I felt it was presented in a very correct way. Maybe others do not do that, or people do not read these papers
