    I used os/2, tried BE OS, tried solaris, and using linux and bsd for servers .... ahm windows in a virtual machine for some stuff (like gadgets that have only windows drivers : eg polar heart rate monitor)

    hmm .... ahm yep ... would I switch ? Probably no, I have 2 OSes that are 100% OK for me, I can work on them, and since I use the web (as in a browser) and work in the command shell, as vi/mcedit config/html/php files, I would stick with something that I already know well ...

    On the other hand, I do not like the apple philosophy:
    take the same crap (performance wise),
    put it in a round box (computers should be square on my table),
    overprice it as hell, sell it to HIP people (designers are hip people too, sorry, I am a cubehead)
    interface is too flashy on osx, I would use that power for whatever else, not powering nicely opening windows .... well wmaker rulez (still I use gnome. that is a touch flashier ..)

    hmm what else ... ahm, yep, a computer connected to the net should run a network operating system, not an insecure workstation ..... but i am a netcubehead .... cheers

    Do you use pgp? me neither..

    Not because i am an idiot like others .. because others are idiots.

    No, seriously, using pgp would put a point on all that crap, it is just the ignorance of the masses that prevent me and others to start using it....

    Of course do not pgp everything, but stuff you care about should be protected.

    And tell you what, I was admin at ISPs with thousand accounts, and while I never read mail I know it was common to search info in mails (not private stuff, but some people figured, it was sometimes more interesting to "grep keyword /var/spool/mail/* " then google for it .....

    How can you really prevent your isp to see your mail file ? With laws ? HAHAHA ...

    PGP IT if it is important, educate your friends. If in US, use weak encription (if you care), elsewhere 2048 bits or more ....

    anyway... usually like talking to a wall ....

    On the other hand: when you see people (company ceo) discussing confidential company info, and passwords/accounts over msn and aim, what do you expect from the everyday johndoe who discusses his sexual discoveries or last night's pot-smoking adventures to his buddy via email? Nothing: other than clear text ....

    cam solution
    4x pctv or 1x something with 4 tuners (that way you also have 4xpip tv tuners to play with ...
    or 1 pctv for TV +other inputs + a few webcams ...

    a tip (that probably you know) :
    check the webcam if it sees infra !
    point it at yout TV remote (or whatever infra) and see if it sees the light ...

    after all you can buy 100s of inra leds, to illuminate a (dark) room and still see it ....
    (please note that most infra controls have a warning not to point it into eyes = make a research what infra does to your or babys' eyes) (I think nothing, but U know, do not sue me :)

    streaming: an IPAQ with linux has mplayer, or even wince has streaming options....

    Use an extra craddle next to your bed/desk/kitchen (for your IPAQ-to-USB) , and you do not wireless pollute your home ... (also USB is faster(??) than wifi ... you need power anyway, because an ipaq runs for 2 hours tops with my SMC wireless sucking webpages (with streaming I guess 1 hour tops)
    (I would not put a wifi shit next to my baby ... ) - actually I am thinking of making a faraday cage/room as my new home's bedroom ... (walls wired to filter any/most radio freq)

    ** pctv : no matter what brand, I prefer bt848, it works fine and easy in linux

    tuner advantage over webcam: usually faster encoding with separate sound inputs (you can save soundcard for telecom/whatever)

    tip: did you know that an sblive can be used as 2 cards ? (2 front 2 rear speakers separately)

    nah ... these came in mind ....

    actually as soon as my house is complete, I am planning on a ligh gas blimp with a cam over the garden :) fixed to the floors with 3-4 wires ... :)

    linux motion sensor: while not complete/perfect, an interesting software to play with is "motion"
    while not good for motion detection alone (use an x10, that signals to linux, and works OK) it can capture some images when babisitter goes to places she should not (eg your home office)

    I decided to turn a site to full css on request. To make it more interesting, they wanted to use postnuke, which has templates based on heavy table use.
    I am not a designer, and worked for a week on the site, so it almost looks the same on every browser.

    However I realised, that a lot of the browsers have broken css render (such as IE 5) and many people are using those still, so you will end up writing lots of version detection stuff, that will put different css for every browser.

    Instead of turning everything simple,. it makes a hell right now.

    just to give an example, look at it from ie5 (note the menu on top how it sucks)
    now look at ie6 (look ho the menus get wider, and that padding does not work right (eg the main chapters on the news pages)

    now look at mozills, it looks kinda OK ...
    that's where I am, maybe I roll back to tables , or start the browser detection dependent css horror :(

    In some countries, you cannot sell a pc without an operating system.

    So stores offer pcs with dr dos or other free (one disk format c: /u /s) solutions to overcome the law ...

    I do not see why you would spend loooong minutes to install linux, as opposed to disk in & format - 1 minute operation

    on the other hand, at least the technically challenged can try linux, and maybe gets stuck with it, as I did since '94 :)

    when will people understand, that unless there is a full blown text reading and UNDERSTANDING AI ranking sites, there will be tricks to use.

    Since you use keywords to search, you get pages that are relevant to those keywords..

    sure there is ask jeeves where you enter: Where can I buy a brain?
    but is still searches for "brain"+"buy" (meybe +"where" ...

    anyway .... I live mostly from SEO ... and google pisses me off nowadays ... so critisize it as you like...

    sorry cannot predict only sniff what comes .... they do not send the upcoming cards before you hit "deal" :)

    Besides a proprietary plug for the etherenet/modem adapter it is a BAY for your HARD DRIVE !

    Ok online casinos are downloadable, or Flash/Java.
    Poker rooms are always download (eg they run on windows, some run on mac)

    Instead of scanning the screen, for the input it really makes sense to watch the traffic, everything that happens at the table is transferred to you.

    Quite honestly I just started a sniffer (sniffit on my linux box, while running an online casino client in vmware on windows2k) and seeing the output makes me wonder how long it would take to figure out what's what, since a single blackjack hand played havoc with my eyes on my sniffer screen :)

    I wonder how long it will take to have a Punkbuster for casinos :)

    -or matrox 2-4 port video (chep now)
    Linux/Xfree86 with 2 mice 2 keyboards
    2 monitors .....
    This is no magic, setup can be a pain depending on your hardware/distro.....

    need no twin-whatever and 2 licences of XP ......
    have VMware and 1x win2k (you run it on 1 CPU don't you ...)
    it is still cheaper, reliable, and does the job ...

    ahm did I forget ? stash in 2gb of ram and a SCSI and connect 4 keyboards/mice and 4 monitors for 4 users .....
    and again it is 1 CPU for win2k and VmWare ...
    (my copy is professional, it says 1-2 CPU and does not say anything about users)
    read it like this: 4 people use it, but it still runs on 1-2 CPU (the licence did not say I have to count VM cpu-s, just real ones)

    I mean these kind of apps are mostly for the technically enabled people ...

    If you sell a virtual machine (or emulator) the first thing to *NOT DO* is to state it runs without a performance decrease.

    It will eat mem, it will use your CPU, and it will access your drives *SIMULTANIOUSLY* with the host operating system.

    You can say: minimal performance decrease, and 99 percent of the applications, but when someone claims these thing I just get itchy ...

    I ran VmWare, Wine, and several others ... what emulators do is the run some appse (more or less), what VMs do is run all apps, with the burden of 2 oses on your machine, and most of the time having problems with spec hardware (even a simple USB cam) ...

    on the other hand they might be cool just do not SAY 100% apps and no performance damage

    yes, I agre, on the other half only part of "gambling" is really gambling :

    putting $200 on a horse race IS GAMBLING ..

    playing Poker with $0.50 with a few friends online IS GAMBLING ... but it is 2 different worlds ...

    betting $0.50 at a decent Poker company (where they take 3% of the rake) opposed to throwin $200 at video blackjack... (a typical example of human stupidity, since everyone knows how to calculate a number that is smaller then the dealer's or bigger than 21 )

    on the other hand Poker is not gambling (but it is just my opinion *and many others'*)

    Paypal is not usable for casinos for a looong time.

    Living in Costa Rica cannot even open a paypal account (well I can open, but my cards are just rejected) since so many US gaming companies companies hired locals to use personal accounts to do payouts and take payments ....

    it also makes me wonder what is adult and what not : if I order a vibrator for my wife with my paypal from a "toy store" am I in violation ?

    I feel paypal is putting so many regulations on the accounts it is already impossible to use for lots of people (eg. me)

    just my thought ...I would use paypal, but I cannot, actually I mad at them and it got to the point where I say I hate paypal

    I think that kind of search is ultimately fault. There is no universal high for everyone ...
    (sure there are real drugs, but even that is different for each)

    But returning to games

    I know why I love Ghost Recon, Chr of Riddick or Rainbow Six, and I know why I put down Halo or Unreal....
    they are all top rated shooters

    I know why I like GTA and why not True crime
    they are just the same genre

    I also clearly know why NFSUG (or HP) or Toca gives me the rush and why Burnout2 or Project Gotham Racing 2 leaves me bored after 5 minutes ....
    I could continue forever with Silent Hill vs Suffering or could cite any other game from my shelves ...

    I think it is just taste which is also constantly changing ...
    Sure there is best seller recipe like Coke ... but I think with games it is a bit more complicated ...

    Also: why not any comparison ? Why don't they write why my wife gets high on DDR MAX and me on GTA ....
    Why do I fall asleep on KOTOR and played Invisible war almost nonstop ....

    anyway, people are just animals, they go after the dominant leader... I am sure there is a high percentage of gamers who finish a game just to impress and prove and not for the real high they feel during the play ....
    the high you get during the racing games, that I never intend to finish/beat ... just a rush of jumping that tripple with the quad ....

    I know while I play games I get a certain high ..

    As the COCOM list contained (high speed/mainframe) computers in the "steel curtain" era, communist countries could not put their hands on these machines ...

    Hungary did somehow and soon they were discovered because as soon as the installation was made it started emmitting tiny "beep-beep I am here" signals ..... now if that could happen in the 70s I am sure they can strap on a to-satellite sender that starts shouting when someone breaches the hull, or even on a regular basis .....

    Just hope the NSA doesn't turn them into a transformer device, that would fly away in the case of emergency or even worse: turn into a nuclear bomb ....

    I am not a physics genius, but I guess the smallest model does not contain too much uranium to make a decent size explosion ...

    Being right now in Costa Rica I would better fear the regular earthquakes, or possible vulcanic activity ... I am sure it takes some muscle to crush the hull, but sliding vulcanic minerals have the muscle to crush anything ....

    Hahaha ... what happens to the upcoming PS3 ?
    Will sony buy the codec from M$ to be able to play back video from a source which was developed by a consortium that sony is part of itself ?

    What happens to open source?
    I tell you what happens ... as I (not so often watch) watch and sometimes copy (only rented movies to DVD-RW so I can watch them again in a few days then delete them)
    on my linux box with deccs ... and as I use SMBFS, and format FAT .... I will probably have some handy tool written by some good/decent samaritan to read those damn video disks ....

    and you will do the same ...

    why? : because I have to pay to microsoft every time I buy a laptop or an IPAQ, and I just simply delete the OS to replace it with something more useful ....

    I bought so many copies of their damn crap os that I decided not to directly purchase anything from them ....

    If I head to buy a codec I would steal it ... If I have to modchip my upcoming ps3 to play back (in case you have to pay extra $$ for the playback codec) I would do it ....
    too bad though that when you buy the devices the codec is already in, and they cashed already on you...

    -has several ads for splinter cell: pandora tomorrow ...

    kind of a nice idea, but really freaks you out since there is a guy with a gun on the ad, so you most likely shoot the ad to hell on the first sight :)

    Some other recent game was full of coke machines and gatorade dispensers (or was it powerade ?? ) I think it was breakdown ... ahm too many games, too many ads, too many brands ....

    Last time I mentioned this was moderated down as "flamebait" ..

    I think here it is adequate to mention, that these games usually have low ratings such as "E" despite some of these games feature weapons and violence, blood and bad language is suppressed somewhat ...

    for me it seems that whenever it is to recruit "family safe" entertainment is less important than making more people beleive that if you like adventure and fun the army is the best place for you to have some fun.

    It is sad and unacceptable for my moral norms ... no moderate me down again if you do not agree

    ahm well, you could use eg a broken screen ipaq - has ANY port via cf/pcmcia, and power consumption is LOOOW ... :)

    on the other hand I've read about dallas and 1wire .. seems cool ....

    ingridients: old pc (i386 from garage sale)
    joystick port
    2 thermistors (2kohm if i remember right)
    linux distro (eg debian) -dos works too, but no tcpip stack

    old joystick

    preparation:
    1. open up joy, locate potmeters
    2. replace with thermistors
    3. install op sys with joy support
    4 calibrate thermistors (eg in +50c water and -10c fridge.
    5. read values, post it on website ...

    optional:
    parallel port device control - never did that (other than 8 leds connected for a load meter)

    on the other hand with a cheap pc+serial port + X1 you can really program some fancy llighting scheme and even heating stuff ....

    Popups, pop-(over/under-between-whatever) and 10000k's of flash/java suck balls really!

    But what is wrong with text links and decent size banners ?

    I am not talking about 100 banners on one page, just one on top, one on bottom and maybe some 125x60's inline .....

    If you guys would realise please: the internet is not ruined by those who put ads on their pages; that keeps your content free...

    the problem is SPAM advertisement, and the problem is search engine SPAMMING ...

    As people will block decent website owners' normal ads, more and more people will turn to SPAM and blackhat SEO techniques ....

    Since google denied to put pharmacy ads into adwords my get "X@N@X V|c0d|n cheap" SPAM vent up by about 600%, while my commissions from pharmacy advertisement went down by 50% ...
    before there was decent advertising, now there is killer SE and MAIL SPAMMING .....

    bottom line: KILL/BLOCK all ads and your mailbox will be doomed.....

    I am kinda missing the component video output ...
    and you know what ... I can live with that maybe ... but no digital optical audio ? even no digital coax ??? (I prefer it over optical, as you can extend it more easily, and cables are cheaper ... of course for close connections i choose optical ... just like the hum of that red light that sneaks out as my rottveiler tends to get behind the TV ...):)

    so no hdtv connection, no chance to enjoy DTS .. (or anything that travels in an only digital way to your amp ....)

    5.1 hookup is there, but hey .. i did not buy an amp for TV+my game consoles to hook an other 5 speakers up into my living room ...

    where is the display ? not that I like to stare at the LCD (i actually dim it to minimum (nice feature on sony amp & dvd) but I expect to play mp3's and Do not want to have a TV on just for OSD ...

    sorry for the strong critics , but instead of that I would shove a digital receiver card in a mini ATX mobo with a 2gig celeron and a sb live for digi out ... 2 laptop drives for silent storage and a 100buck DVD/CD reader/burner ... buy an lcd for usb port ... and use mplayer for avi, ogle for DVD ... ....

    of course there are people who roll their own cigarettes ... and the ones that don't ... i don't smoke :)
