Let me get this straight.... Let's say you have purchased (a license to use) Photoshop. If I borrow your CD, and install it on my computer, I have pirated it.
But you can still use yours right?
It undermines an arbitrary business practice of selling "IP" to be sure - but it is certainly not stealing.
The government is not "forcing" the French to use a different word for email. They are "promoting" the use of a different word.
It's not so different from the US government promoting words and phrases like "Weapons of Mass Destruction" over "Unconventional Weapons." Or Surgical Strike over Decapitation Strike (or better yet, Assasination).
Or my favourite of late (in Canada anyhow) is the use of "STI - Sexually Transmitted Infection" since the word "Disease" is apparently too stigmatising.
They're not forcing anything on anyone, but if the sheep see it enough, they'll start using it themselves.
Anyone else pissed off that they got a GBA for Xmas and Nintendo releases this news the week after?
Pretty slimy tactic if you ask me.
The only time you should have to replace a console is when it breaks. It should have been designed properly the first time. What do we do with our *old* GBAs now?
> Actually, I don't think any of the geek > stereotypes hold too well anymore
That's more to do with the fact that "definition" of geek is so dilluted now. Anyone who knows how to get on the internet is considered a "geek." Anyone who can find a MapHack utility for Warcraft is elite, hell, if you can install your new Graphics card, you must be a geek or a nerd!!
User-centric design has destroyed the empire of geekdom!!
It used to be that spam (in the internet sense) was about email-based advertising that got sent you numerous times by someone you'd never heard of. They got your address by dictionary attacking with phone book names, or spidering the web for people who left addresses lying around.
Generally, it was porno, which upset people even more.
Currently, if you were to believe the/. community, _any_ kind of advertisement is Spam. Banners over the jumbo-tron? Spam. Pop-up ads on websites you're viewing for free? Spam. Ads for travel insurance in your credit card bill? Spam.
The fact that we are bombarded with ads in a supply-side economy DOES NOT mean that every advertisement is SPAM.
In fact, with data-mining and the vast info-trail people leave behind them, i hope that in a world of advertising, newer campaigns will at least be directed at me when there's a good chance I'll be interested.
Fuck you you good for nothing pirate. You can do whatever the fuck you want with your hardware. Throw it out the window.. masturbate all over the joypad.. and Microsoft won't give a fuck.
People want mod chips so they can PIRATE GAMES. But you can't accept that can you? Guns don't kill people, people kill people right?
Create/Sell your own GNU/GPL console then.. the best part is that you won't then buy an XBox, and drive up the price of my games with your piracy.
> Now...if only we in Canada could fix our stupid > national anthem! "God keep our land/Glorious > and free..." Bah...
I once heard it sung as "Oh Canada, Glorious and Free"
And speaking of problems with the Canadian anthem.. I also remember a complaint about the part involving "In all thy sons command" as being anti-female, and wanting to change it to "In all our _hearts_ command, with glowing _pride_ we see thee rise..." (changing hearts to pride in the second line to avoid "heart" duplication I spose...
This is slashdot.. you make statistics up as you see fit.
e.g.
I remember reading that MS has actually contacted all the major 3rd party developers for PS2, including Square, Capcom, Sega, etc., and has signed exclusive agreements with them to develop for Xbox!
Maybe it's actually a hidden agenda campaign, trying to rally support for simply nuking Nevada off the map, and all it's sinful habits (guns, gambling)
The article is biased, and full of contradictions. It tries to make the point that since the head of the development effort is quitting his position, he must know something we don't, and that the XBox must be doomed. It then follows with this:
--quote "Absolutely! Xbox kicks ass."
But, hey, what else would you expect an ex-Xbox evangelist to say? --endquote
So... he's not quitting because the Xbox is doomed? What's this article about again?
That might mean that he couldn't continue spreading anti-MS FUD..
Heavens no! MS has an innovative, technically superior product, at a competitive price. The sky must be falling! If we all try hard enough, the/. machine can kill the XBox! Boycott it, cuz it's dead anyways!
If only Lucas would grant permission for someone else to make Episode 3. Then we might get a movie worth watching!
Ignorance of the law isn't a defense.
Ignorance of the act is.

Well, no. It's true.

Vi must be easier to use. Or more available. Or simply worth the effort of learning.
My subject pretty much sums it up.

And you get modded down...
The red stapler thing is old news anyways.. I think it's time for something else to carry on the News for Nerds torch.

OMG, I must be tired.. that should have said they don't mind pimping anything so long as it's not Microsoft...
I'll just sit down, and drink my coffee now.. heh and wait for the 2 minute lameness filter.

Because linux folk don't mind pimping *anything* so long as it's not Linux!
