To be honest the purchase has baffeled me as well. $1,65bn just doesnt seem worth it - really.
I have three (somewhat conjoined) theories:
1) An attempt to get their foot in the door with social networking, (to eventually tackle myspace?) and establish total "Internet Dominance" (tm)
2) Google has tossing money and throwing their weight around around to create buzz and increase stock...
3) Plans to take over the growing (legal) internet media distribution market. Perhaps partner with the likes of Paramount and co?

Alice: Hiya!
Me: You're in a desert walking along in the sand when all of the sudden you look down, and you see a tortoise, it's crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, its belly baking in the hot sun, beating its legs trying to turn itself over, but it can't, not without your help. But you're not helping.
Alice: Wadda ya mean I'm *not* helping it?!?!!??!?!/!!?
Me: I mean you're not helping it.
Yet another pure thing corrupted by money/power etc.. etc...
I guess can't blame the bastid, everyone wants financial security (+ a couple ferraris).
I wonder how far exactly they are gonna push it?
I guess its no surprise EA is going down, after how badly they marketed their new game Armies of Exigo (which is actaully quite cool), but as nobody ever plays online (or non-online for that matter) it pretty much makes it useless.
Still quite sad to see them go, especially since they one of the oldest players in the game.
Sure that may work for the technically enlightened, but thats not the issue - what are the chances that granny is going to know how to setup her "magic-box" to use a proxy...
It can be compared to the old IE/Firefox issue, a (better) solution may be out there, its just that often people don't have a clue.
In our city it uses the sensors under the tarmac at night (when traffic is more erratic) and timed during the day.
Only trouble is at night if you are on a motorbike its a bitch, some frikkn lights never change.
I wonder how much more effective it would be if you could put an "artificial-intelligence" in the traffic lights, I mean I am sure there is a saturation point in efficiency, I wonder how far off it this guys report is and how far we are at the moment.
Microsoft has so much cash sitting in the bank that even if M$ *did* somehow start turning losses from open source taking the lead they would have years to ride it out on all of their profit.
That being said I dont think that open source will realisitically dominate the desktops for many years to come, some things like drivers just plain old dont work (yet) on *nix. Not to mention many applications dont function 100% (using WINE) or at all.
Until granny can plug-something-in and it works it just aint gonna happen...
Its more like a 5mp camera (that has a built in phone). Look at the size of the thing!
Crossover electronics like this are never the way forward unless they 100% unprohibit the synergising product. Who wants to carry a brick around in their pocket honestly?
Anyone know where you can download it?

i used to do this until i read some sloppy javascript and my brain went into an infinite loop
Provided it is correct... I don't suppose there is any third party organisation that was allowed limited access to the data to confirm it?

Human brains, being as powerful processors as they are don't run as hot... Therefore as a pc chip doesnt _need_ to either surely?
IMO the whole "Solaris has gone open source" is just too little too late.
There goes my bullshit detector

Child pron was legal in Japan, in fact it was only very recently that they brought down the hammer on it (1999 ood): Child pron @ wikipedia

I think they have actually already asked Orb from Quake 3.
