How long have we been saying this... Half Life 2 is just something they tell us about to make us drool, they're turning us into Pavlov's Dog's, it was supposed to be released in like april or something?? I think Valve is just saying this to get money from investors
You may now call me troll, and throw me beneath the bridge
Wouldn't it be great if simply RUNNING a computer program/game was as easy as playing a PS2/XBox/Gamecube game?
With a PS2/XBox/Gamecube game they all have the same hardware so any settings that are hardware reliant can be pre-set. With computers we cannot assume the hardware platform, or Operating system to be run on. For example for a game or high graphics use program. What video card is used? how much memory does it have? And then there are things that we need to know for some other features.
Unfortunately, it's the 80/20 rule, 80% of people use 20% of the program, and 20% of people use 80% of the program. The big problem with this is... What 20% do they use? It varies from person to person... Do you use the Document Map in Microsoft word? I do, every time I'm working with a document more then a couple pages. Do you use Excel "If" functions? I do, how about VLookups? Do you use Nero's CD Text feature? I have (not often) but it saved me when I needed it.
The big problem is... as programmers we can't assume what features the customers are going to use 90% of the time unless the software is for one specific company, and only one use in that company. Take an Inventory system for example.. do the Cashiers at the store care how the stuff is entered to the Database? No, they just wanna be able to scan the customer product, and tell them how much it costs.... 80/20 rule... remember that
But where is this leading... RFIDs on Japanese children now, criminals worldwide in 3 years, American and European Kids in 5 years, then in 12 years when all the kids are adults.... well... everyone has them.... With all new technology there is always the privacy issue, and quite frankly my boss doesn't need to know when I go for a smoke break, or go to the washroom, and the government don't need to know when I got home last night, and where I was prior to that
This is one technology where the privacy issues far outweigh the potential benefits if it sees wide spread, long term use
Odd.... how e-mail going to nowhere.com goes No Where.....

The article isn't about reading in general, it's about reading fiction, and poetry, not technical manuals and news (on or off line.) So it's not about the literacy (as one poster seemed to think.
Also movies can not possibly contain all the content of a well written book, take The Lord Of the Rings for example, if all the content of the books was included in the movies we'd be waiting for parts 4-9 to come out still.
Reading is not made to be interesting any more in schools, required reading includes books that no one wants to read anymore, and the school describes them as "Literary classics" and to kids classics = old, and un interesting.
So in conclusion, reading can still be fun, we just have to have our schools upgrade the required reading, perhaps some Douglas Adams (may he rest in peace) or Terry Pratchett. Or allow students to pick books (not magazine articles) to read. But some required reading that should include the classics are...
It was probably a case of not knowing what the "weather" would be like up there. Excessive winds carrying dust and small stones could easily damage parts of the rover, rendering it inoperable, hence the conservative estamate.
People are complaining about length, content, and many endings... READ THE BOOK and find out how much longer it would have been if Peter Jackson didn't cut alot of it out. (My best guess is a set of 7-9 three hour movies)
and that elven archers are incredibly potent - early on, Gimli dismounts a Nazgul with a single shot!
Gimli is a Dwarf... not an elf
ith about a thousand eagles (given elven archers on each one)
Well... you never tried to fire a bow from anything that moves have you? Besides... Gimli couldn't sit on an eagle too well, he has a hard enough time with horses. Not to mention the "Full force" attack you mention earlier... there was 6 eagles... not 1000
"black orcs" (er... maybe we just call them "blacks" for short) and the white Men of the West achieve a total genocidal victory.
Read the books... the men of the north (besides the dunedain (Aragon, or Strider whichever you prefer) had dark skin, and the victory was not genocidal, there where still plenty left (again read the book, and actually look on the screen at the end of the 3rd movie... the 3rd movie is the one that just came out in case you're too dumb to realize that)
I could continue discretiting you but you're not worth the time.
Well the break in was the fact that i was able to see all open ports (that the firewall hid) so that i could do standard pings to one of these ports. and was able to gain access to the (apparently off) NTP. and yes... i reported all bugs using the built in reporting tool, as well as e-mailing support.
I did the same thing with all 3 Lord of the Rings, altho what I USUALLY do is download a movie/game/cd/program and try it out... not some limited demo version but the full thing. If i like it then the producers/actors/programmers/artists get my money. If i don't like it.... i delete it.
Step 2: install 3 popup blockers, 4 spyware utilities, and 5 Antivirus programs, 3 firewalls, and make sure it's behind a good external firewall, get all windows updates on a CD to install them offline.
Since it would be around the equator wind wouldn't be much of a problem. Remember the oceans in that area is famous for doldrums which is a sign of how much wind is around the equator.
I decided to try out SP2 RC2 on my computer, boy... was that a mistake
Here's the hardware i have to give u a heads up... AMD 3200+, DFI NFII Ultra Infinity Motherboard (nForce 2 chipset) nVidia FX 5700, 1GB RAM, DVD+-RW, and 2 hard drives....
Here's what happened...
Random re-boots: claiming my video drivers where at fault, so i installed older drivers... same thing.. hacked/leaked drivers... same thing
Random re-boots: claiming some other drivers where causing the problem, but M$ couldn't tell which ones
I used my Linux computer to nmap (and otherwise attack) the windows new firewall... took 8 minutes to break in (good thing i'm behind a HW firewall)
Unreal Tournament 2004 was drawing textures funny alerting me to an upcomming re-boot
After removing SP2 RC2... everything works fine....
hear some installers don't even lock the windows after they install them! The expect the homeowners to do that themselves! Scandalous!
We already have to "lock" down M$ Windows after installing it (2 hours worth of updating at high speed if you don't have SP1 on the cd) and i still have to install and antivirus before i can do that.
Don't have those problems in linux.......
BTW: i have one windows computer and one doing my first ever stage1 install of gentoo... wish me luck
I'm a Linux zealot and Mac lover and go no where without my iPod.
If you're a Linux zealot, then you like open source, so how can you use a portable music player that doesn't support ogg Vorbis?? And it only has 8 hours of battery? Rio Karma Baby!!!

Sorry, i know this is off topic
but i think another format is just going to confuse new users.
Well... since winamp (which most people in windows use) supports ogg built in.... where's the confusion?
