Unless we ended reproduction, or severely limited it (perhaps, by removing reproductive capabilities of newborns), the world would soon be extraordinarily overpopulated. Economies would crumble, society would be in shambles, etc.

Of course, we could always legalize murder to balance it out a little, but I think having everyone not live 1,000 years is a better idea.

Well, typically, people from slashdot rarely even read the article after clicking it. So, I doubt they click through all the pages. Therefore, mirrordot is probably pretty useful for the majority of the load slashdot pushes onto a web site.

How would you like your 10 year old daughter's email winding up on every porn list known to man? Or maybe your mother's home address, phone #, email posted to alt.sex.milf?

Uh, why would I give my daughter's email out to anyone when i'm signing up for things, if I wanted her email private? On the other hand, if she did it herself, she's obviously independent enough that I trust her to not care about, or filter out, 'bad stuff.' Also, why would the 'evil corporations' post emails that they paid for to alt.sex.milf? Those two hypotheticals seem absurd to me.

By the way, I could sell the iPod and use the money from it to buy McAfee Spamkiller AND come out with a profit. It's a win-win situation.

Logic and math skills are certainly genetic. People can be born without the mental capability to do high level math. I could change your story to the following:

My manager wanted to be mathematician, but his IQ is only ~100, and there were much smarter pupils in high school and college, so he didn't really get a chance to shine (read: he didn't get into honors or upper-level math classes). No amount of study or work is going to help if what you really need is higher IQ.

People need 'lucky breaks' in pretty much any career. Just as with Math and intelligence, there are plenty of professional sports players that aren't physically gifted. Mugsey Bogues in the NBA, et al.
