The first official release of WinTux will be three months after the introduction of Windows Whistler. Beta testers may apply for a special, low-cost, evaluation version at www.microsoft.com
Most people who smoke do so because they are addicted. It's extremely painful to watch someone suffer because they cannot quit smoking. Personally, I'd like to see all the people that run the tobacco companies executed by the most painful method possible, but sadly, money talks.
Thinking of HDs... I once took a 600MB HD out of my old computer and took it with me back to college, and on the way there I was in a car wreck. Despite getting thrown around, and left outside for a couple days, the HD still worked (although it does occasionally make a ticking noise, and is basically on its last leg.)
That analogy doesn't quite work... the idea of a "white worm" is to patch the system so that it wouldn't be hit with another virus. How does darning your socks protect you from being mugged again? A better analogy would be if the mugger attacked you with a brick and then gave you a helmet to protect you from other brick-wielding maniacs. Of course, this doesn't give him the right to hit you to begin with.
If you go even further back, the US Army fed troops beef that was rotten when they bought it. Some troops dies, but Hormel made tons of money off of it.
It's been said that during the Spanish-American war, more soldiers died from food poisoning and disease than from the enemy. Food processing back then truly was disgusting (if you want to be disgusted, just read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair...)
At one of the local stores, they have machines that have scales to make sure you don't try to steal anything... and what inevitably happens is that if you scan something and do not place it in the bag quickly enough, the damn machine ends up in an infinite loop of "Put the item in the bag!" and "Take the item out of the bag and rescan it!" until either the cashier intervenes, or I kick the machine and it shuts up... not to mention that at any moment, at least one of the machines has crashed.
This is a big problem for free software. I don't have to pay. I am willing to pay for software if there is a price, but if the price is zero but please donate..sorry, I'll pay zero. It is an unfortuante business model for the free software providers, I honestly don't know how any of them stay in business.
And how many people pirate non-free software? For those people, the price of the non-free software is zero, so it becomes the same situation as with free software. Why pay when you can get it for free? So, by your logic, how does Microsoft stay in business when people can get Windows for free? Well, some people really like the free software and are willing to pay to support it. Likewise, many people don't want to break the law by pirating Windows, and thus pay for Windows, supporting Microsoft.
"d) If you have Zonealarm on her computer, set it so IE has no Internet access"
Tried doing that to my sister... and when she found out that IE was blocked, the first thing she said was, "You have this f*ing peice of s*t so f*ed up that I can't get the Internet to work." This after explaining again and again why she should use Firefox and why she should not use IE, and after showing her all the spyware crap she put on the computer by using IE. So, I re-enabled IE, and stopped supporting the computer... Whenever I use it, I use Knoppix on it, rather than bother booting a spyware-infested copy of Windows.
It's 92 million screen names, and many people may have more than one screen name, especially for AIM, etc., so it wouldn't actually be 92 million people.
I've had problems with Hotmail delaying emails for a long time. I've often tried to send emails from my college account to my hotmail account, and end up not receiving it for as much as two days. I've even given up using my hotmail account for web registrations, because I've found that some websites require a response in 24 hours or the registration is cancelled... and the message appears two days later. The only reason I even bother keeping my hotmail account is that I use it for MSN messenger, because many of the people I know insist on using MSN.
If I remember correctly, go to Start-Run, and type gpedit.msc (that's from what little I remember from when I was using XP, so it may be wrong), and then click on System in the window that appears. In the right panel, there should be an option called Autorun. Change it to false.
I may be wrong about some of the details, since it's been a while since I ran XP.
The problem with this is human nature. It would be great if we were capable of fixing eveything here before we go anywhere. However, as humans, we are incapable of fixing our problems simply because we can never agree on how to fix our problems, or what our problems are in the first place. Terraforming Mars, however, provides an escape route when things go wrong (note that I said when, not if), and also helps give us technology that will make life here easier, and get us closer to actually fixing our problems.
Why, teaching them that mixing corn syrup and caramel color in water is stealing from Coca-Cola, of course.
In carbonated water. Otherwise, it won't fizz.
Oh crap, I just violated the DMCA by giving out information on circumvention methods...
And if you thought the birds treated your car badly, just wait...
Yes, it was. The link doublem posted is a joke that needs to be updated, since XP/Whistler has been out for a while.

Don't they mean Longhorn?

On the other hand, if you use the internet to get any type of english-language news, you read the New York Times and the Washington Post.
What about BBC News? For English-language news on the Internet, I'd think that BBC News is used more often than the NYT or Washington Post.

Thank you!
I'd like an invite.

A $699 car? So they got a Yugo?
As a college physics major, I vote for the first option, the free pizza one.
Well, I suppose it could have been Berlin, Pennsylvania
and he drives a Chevy that runs off of used vegetable oil.
I love my ol' stick-shift Chevy! I guess in the same way I like ol' CLI Linux...
It was on the show Greed that was on Fox for a while.

By then you might be able to get a stripped-down Thai version of Longhorn.

Slackware 9.1 gave me a great few days setting it up. I'm definately going to have to try Slack 10.
ok... so I'm a total nerd... so what?

In summary, Hotmail bad.
