OSX Automatically defrags while it's in use, every time you open a file smaller than.. 20 megs IIRC (which is MOST files you'll be using), it relocated it.
Also, any time you install or update software from apple, that "Optimizing System Performance" defrags as well (along with a few other things too).
The need to defrag a windows box every other week is just the result of poor design choices made by microsoft.
It had the nasty ability to fry the controller on the mobo if you hot-plugged things. Granted this didn't happen every single time, but it would certainly mess up your day when it did happen
This reminds me of a story I heard from my mechanic (no this is NOT off-topic) about a woman that came into his shop one day.
Apparently she bought a new car, and drove it around for about a year.. until one day the engine just started smoking, overheated and totally siezed up.
When the car got towed in, there was nearly no oil left in the motor, and what was left was totally gunked up.
When asked when she had last had her oil changed, the woman said that she "didn't know that it needed to be changed"
So to relate that to computers, it's not always apathy, many people just simply don't know any better.
I've seen some research ( I believe it was done at Penn State) into using the scramjet chamber to hold rocket propellant.
Basically the first stage is a solid rocket, then when that burns out, the space where the propellant was is now empty, and becomes the combustion chamber. The application it was intended for was a rocket assisted, gun launched projectile for the military. But the same concept of dual purposing the chamber should be applicatble to most scramjet applications.
As a matter of fact, i've travelled several times with my iPod in my jacket just like this. ( headphones out the coat hook loop, remote hanging down the sleve at fingertip access, and iPod in the pocket)
if/when i can get a player with the same level of simple UI elegance with a few new features.
Screw color screens and video / photo playback.
I want a built in AM/FM reciever, FM transmitter and bluetooth.
Why bluetooth you might ask?
So that (with a simple mic too i suppose) i can answer my cell phone without taking off my headphones.
I recently bought a 12inch 1.33Ghz Rev.C powerBook with 768megs ram for about $1650 and can compare it to a Toshiba...satellite 40 (i think) 1.8 Ghz pentium M with 1 gig of ram taht cost $1300
The PowerBook is MUCH zippyer with all common use, i haven't combiled or rendered anything to compare full load use. the PowerBook also gets much better battery life, 4-5 hours per charge, the toshiba only got about 3 1/2.
Ontop of those differences, the powerbook is MUCH smaller and sleeker than almost every wintel laptop i've seen here at school ( except for the really really tiny sony vaios).
Bottom line, a powerbook is a great purchase. But as a word of advice, if you're concerned about price, get the 12 inch with combo drive unless you NEED to burn DVDs. All the other models start to get really expensive really quickly.
I own several Macs, and can personally attest to the usability of USB flash on the platform.
They are very easy to use. Drive mounts in less time than a CD does (about 2 seconds) and shows up on the desktop. Unmounting/ejecting is just as easy, right-click the drive and eject, done.
My experience with windows has been that these same procedures take three or four times longer and involve more clicks/commands.
The enforcement of this will most likely be very.... ineffective, much like CAN-SPAM. Also, since many offenders based outside the U.S. anyway, this won't even apply to them.
What we REALLY need is a law making it legal to hunt do and castrate (preferably with a dull spoon) the people that send all this crap.
I've been following the GC for a couple of months now, with the aim of setting up a team at school.
While there are some very tough technical barriers to be overcome, getting a vehicle in 'race' shape shouldn't be THAT hard. All of the pieces needed are available, they just need to be integrated. A dedicated team of college students (engineers) should be able to start in september and still be competitive.
They need dimmer displays.... now hear me out on this one.
LCD screens (and computer displays in general) put out a LOT of light. Looking at a page of white text is like looking directly into a 40 watt light bulb. I personally have a hard time with this, after an hour or so of editing text my eyes actually hurt. Switching to white/light text on a black/dark background helps. But until I can have an eBook without eye strain.... i'll keep my frayed paperbacks thankyouverymuch
until I can get ALL the functionality of both devices in one package.
With only 12 songs, I'd still need my iPod for real music needs. Will the phones have headphone jacks? I sure don't want to listen to music from a single crappy phone speaker.
While this is a step in the right direction, it's not enough. When I can fully replace my iPod, cell phone, and PDA with one device, i'll buy.
Haven't even loaded TFA yet, but the idea sounds VERY similar to the premise of Stephen Baxter's book "Ring"......
an excellent read if you get the chance.

Totally valid, but what happens when the next worm decides to rename important files "claria.exe" or whatever else it pleases, and they get deleted?
ADB was NOT hot swappable.

Where did you think virgins came from?

oh wait.... this is
Holy shit, i knew this dyslexia would come in handy one day.

No trouble at all.
I'll stick to hard-drives myself, the limited read/write life of flash just wouldn't hold up.

If you are refering to the "iLamp" flat panel iMacs (AFAIK all iMacs have been all in ones), then they actually DO have a fan.
It sits at the top of the dome and is about 3.5-4 inches in diameter. Runs almost all the time, but is very VERY quiet due to the sive and low speed.
Thats one more technical challenge to producing a real working holodeck taken care of. w00t!
Next up, tactile feedback.
I'm looking to the pr0n industry to develop that one.

I don't use away messages you insensitive clod!
Seriously, its easier to ignore people you don't want to deal with if they know you don't use away msgs.
BAH, we have one of these teams at my school too (University of Michigan).
Although i will admit i didn't RTFA, it's not news unless it actually FLIES. This has been tried and failed many many times already.
"... It is a common thing that should belong to all. ..."
Uh huh, just like say.. the land under my house should belong to 'all', right?
Sounds like the perfect way to eliminate (subjectively) that pesky wait for Longhorn.....

That being said, let the naysaying commence.
I havn't had a problem with /. and firefox.
Both at home (0.8 on OSX 10.3.5)
and at work (0.9 on Windows 2k sp4)
slashdot renders fine.
