"Isn't rooting for a big, monopolistic company thats against free software kind of anti-slashdot?"
Making a game like this for free is just not feasible. Games are often far too complex and involve too much maintenance and work to be free. It also takes a lot more than just programmers to put together a good game by today's standards. There are some free games out there that are very good such as (ie. America's Army, Nethack, Wolfenstein Enemy Territory) however it is just not possible to expect all games to be free software.
Very true. Most people I know that use these P2P applications to download anything don't care about respecting copyrights at all. Why are they going to change to this new system? I am not saying that this is a good view to have, I am merely saying that it seems to be one that is prevalent in the use of P2P programs and I could not see the masses switching to one that controls people from downloading copyrighted material. There are plenty of legitimate applications of these networks however they are currently used most for trading copyrighted material.
"It actually sounds like a pretty darn good deal to be a student there."
It only sounds interesting if you spend time listening to a lot of music. I go to University and am sick of them including deals in the tuition simply because it works for a few people. If I am not going to use the service I shouldn't have to pay for it, end of story. How is it a good deal if I don't want to download any music?
Extremely fast pace may be a slight overstatement however I would say there are many languages that are taking developers away from Java not just C#. An example of this is how all the students at the local Universities are petitioning to have Java removed as the core programming language as they are complaining that is just not applicable enough compared to other languages such as C#. By no means am I saying these concerns are legitimate but Java is definitely being hit hard lately. Furthermore, I do a lot of freelance work in Toronto for different companies and most of the ones that were using Java a year ago are now switching to the.NET platform. I could not say for the rest of the world but here in Canada Java is being hit hard and the majority of companies, at least that I have dealt with, are switching to.NET to get rid of Java all together. Not saying this is good or bad however I think it's clear, at least in Toronto, that Java is having a hard time keeping up and keeping developers on board.
Consumers don't care what language there application is written in as long as it does what is requested. I am a Java programmer and Sun seriously has to start doing something relevant with the language itself as it is loosing developers at an extremely fast pace. Java powered stickers will do no good when they have no developers left.
I already play all my sports game on my TV. I have a video card that supports TV out and it works great. I bought four of these controllers
and I find it to be much better than any of my consoles. I'm quite sure that lots of other slashdotters are already doing the same. This piece of hardware, like most Alienware products, is also way overpriced however I guess it would be perfect for people that aren't into building there own PCs.
If you win the competition and the $150,000.00 you could then buy a computer for yourself that will be able to run Doom 3, and you would still have just enough money left over to order yourself the game.
I will only purchase this set if they completely re-shot the third movie. The first movie was great; the second was mediocre and focused too much on amazing special effect scenes and the third I found to be incredibly poorly done. I thought this trilogy would be amazing at first however, in my opinion, I was shown to be wrong. I just can't wait for the LOTR series on DVD. I would love to hear what other Slashdotters thought about the entire trilogy.
"So, if I can theoretically pitch an idea so it sounds absolutely awesome but in reality is totally full of crap"
It's not going to be easy to pitch a load of crap to this many people and make it easy for all of them to think it's incredible. They will look into the ideas to check if they are feasible and to make sure that they are possible. They are not going to hand you lots of money unless they think your idea is a good one and they feel that you can make them money.
I had never heard of this list however the more publicity it sees the more awareness it raises. It is very interesting and I am not currently using any products from any of the mentioned companies and will now know to avoid them in the future. If more lists like this were in the popular media, companies would be at least held a little more accountable for there actions by those customers who care about such issues and do not have the time to gather the information about them elsewhere.
You could replace Ipod with any other mp3 player in the title of the story. The iPod is not the only mp3 player out there, there were some before and there are plenty more now. Quite a few with many more space and features. I had to say it but you can now mod me down for my post that doesn't praise the Apple gods.
"These are the statistics that really matter:
Secunia Virus Statistics"
Uh, no there not. Viruses in many cases stem from exploits in the underlying operating system. If there are exploits in the OS and it is worthwhile virus writers will start programming/scripting viruses for Mac. The fact that they continue to hold such a low market share makes it really unnecessary for a virus writer to target them, when they can infect 100000 times the amount of machines on a Windows OS. Exploits can lead to viruses and are easily just as problematic as without the exploit there would be no virus. Furthermore, Apple has been incredibly slow at releasing updates and fixes in the past. Unlike what all the Apple marketers want you to believe their OS is easily vulnerable just like all others. MS may be the worst but that is yet to be proven as they hold such a dominant position in the market that there is virtually no effort to produce viruses for the other platforms. Security takes effort and knowledge no matter what platform you are on.
I haven't used a Mac much but some of the new features that they have been announcing are really interesting. I'm glad to see them continuing to be innovative. I really like the look of Dashboard as I am a big fan of gdesklets and from what I can see it looks very similar. I prefer Linux on my desktop but because of Apples great integration with Java and all these new features the next laptop I buy is definitely shaping up to be a Powerbook.
"I was very skeptical when I saw the Looking Glass' screenshots, but this definitely looks like it could be usable in Real Life."
Just curious but did you watch the previews or view the screenshots of Project Looking Glass. It looks like it is a lot more polished off and complete than this project. This project looks quite interesting and I don't want to take anything away from it's achievements however, it does not appear to be as polished off or as complete as Project Looking Glass. I'm curious about what makes you skeptical about Project Looking Glass and yet somehow this project, where you can visibly see flaws and is not as far along as Project Looking Glass makes you think that it could be usable in real life.
Recent graduates of the 'Hacker College' realize that their diploma is virtually worthless in the real world and come to realize that they were just socially enginered out of $4000 dollars.

"I beg you, if you have a life right now, DO NOT START ENEMY TERRITORY!!"
And Enemy Territory it is!!!
I just read this and happen to be wearing this t-shirt.
"for A = 0 to 255 . . . ."
How many script kiddies do you think are going to copy that code and try to compile or execute it?

If this was like "Hackers", they would have to dedicate the first semester to figure out what in the hell is going on with the GUI.
Recent graduates of the 'Hacker College' realize that their diploma is virtually worthless in the real world and come to realize that they were just socially enginered out of $4000 dollars.
"Its not gonna work unless they charge only $5 for it though."
And offer a $10 mail in rebate.
"Howabout Windows XP Trailer Park Edition?"
If it comes with a bottle of Johnny Walker, a pack of smokes and Bubbles does the install I want in.
I'm lactose intolerant you insensitive clod.
