Assuming the network component of doom'3 engine is working at it's fullest (disregarding cheat protection) the game engine could be construed as fairly "lan only"

In other words, yes the really great effects like shadows do IN FACT slow down multiplay over the internet, but is still within acceptable limits for LAN play.

So the only reason why doom 3 multiplayer isnt that applicable now (assuming, say they had the same number of maps as quake3, and a ctf mode) is because people dont get the frames per second that any true gamer can work with in multiplayer games. That's a given, when quake 3 came out, the frames most of us were getting, were frames most of us would hate the play with today in such a fast-past multiplayer experiance.

As a one John Carmack accepts this, in the quakecon 2004 videos of the video tapes carmack sent to the event, he accepts the fact that new engines arent that great for multiplayer games, but over the years (as he proceeded to prove) when all our little microcomputers get better hardware, a great looking engine like the one doom 3 uses, will become the standard for those "really fast and fun, but ugly multiplayer games". I cant wait.

  3. Re:Disappointed... on CS: Source Half-Life's Only Multiplayer · · Score: -1
You people have to realize, PC games aren't like they were back in the day.

In addition to taking MUCH longer to make, in this day and age, it's either you make a single player game, or a multiplayer game. BF1942, UT2004, are multiplayer games. The glorious Doom 3 and the belated, and much bitched about Half Life 2, are single player games. Fuck you should be lucky your getting any multiplayer content at all. The singleplayer content in both games is phenonimal. You cant just EASILY add on multiplayer content any longer and make it a 'dual game' so to speak.

Case in point, they had 'dual games' back in the day. Quake 2, Unreal, are too good examples. They HAD both, but they only really did one really well. So, then, if very few games did both aspects well, why was there a larger multiplayer to singleplayer CONTENT ratio back then? (You might ask) That can be answered simply by the above statement, that games are taking REALLY long times frames to produce. Quake 2 had good multiplayer, and the more simple mods were doing VERY well (JailBreak, the CTF expansion come to mind) and those weren't doing much to the actual game content! Counter Strike or DOD, is NOT Half life. (same crappy engine though)...

Which leads me to another pompous statement I make very often, Valve cant make a good multiplayer campaign. Counter Strike, Natural Selection, DOD; ALL MODS!!!! (Valve cant make a multiplayer campaign, but they sure can box up a mod and sell it though...bastards...wheres my linux port...)

So sure it may make sense to bitch about Doom3's multiplayer element, when its creators have been on the record as stating it was a SINGEPLAYER game (hell they didnt even make the multiplayer levels, that stuff was a bonus that we all DIDNT pay for, but enjoyed, if your a deathmatch guy)

Doom 3 was a fantastic, visceral game (provided you didnt do something stupid like play it on a crappy laptop on the beach, and expect to shit your trunks), in addition the engine is a phenominal piece of raw technology. (Duffy and Carmack made great platform)

So your expecting valve to provide you a addictive and fun multiplayer experiance like they did with the first Half Life platform?

THEY DIDNT DO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE! USER CREATED MODS! Valve putting there name on it and selling it to you in a box DOESNT mean they were the developer, Damnit. The multiplayer content will be the same as the original half life, but with better graphics, so if your not going for HL2 for what looks like a really kickass singleplayer campaign, then just stick the the free mods for the original game you bought back in 1998.

If your going for Half Life 2 for the SinglePLayer compaign, word up dude so am I, but realize the reason why the game took so fucking long was becasue valve spent years making a physics system that does pretty much the same crap as anyother physics system they could have just licensed. (Havok and such) They reinvented the wheel, while we played Quake 3/Unreal Tournament 2003,2004 BF1942, BFVIETNAM,TRIBES, ETC ETC ETC.

Valve took there time, and we all got used to some damn good gameplay of other titles, and now when its finally completed, there spending weeks bickering and arguing about how to get the game OUT to us, in the interest of who makes the most money, where in the end I MYSELF will be pirating the game, in spite of gabe newell and his goons, for there lack of a linux port, where the linux dedicated server runs just about the entire backbone of their multiplayer segment, containing all the mods the people actually purchased, which in turn is the only reason why valve has enough money right now, after only realasing one game, 6 years ago...

PS Half the gamers out there play counter strike, because it works on theire geforce 4mx card. There, I said it. Mod this up, I know its "Insightful".

As a Slackware goon, I always wondered how newer versions of Gnome got to Slackware users. LinuxPackages.net, which is mainly for just slackware packages, doesnt seem to really have ever given updates to any of the stock gnome packages on the standard slackware distro. Slackware 10.1 will, of course feature gnome 2.8 (slackware 9.0 was 2.2 9.1 was 2.4, 10.0 was 2.6), but for those of us who think KDE licks balls, and gnome is more of an elegant, less bloated desktop environment, and run Slackware, what are our options? Is there a respistory I'm not familiar with? I doubt slackware.com's package browser would have that packages UNTIL 10.1 comes out, in which case I will upgrade anyways. (Word up) I would compile from source, but would probably fuck it up, but then again, if I format my partitions with every new OS upgrade, I might as well give it a shot. Any place that would have a howto, or list of instructions from building straight from the source off gnome.org?

Valve intentionally left their computers open enough for people to crack it, giving them an excuse to delay their product, and for the most part it worked. You have to give them credit. People like myself were not swayed by this stupid tactic, but as far as computer gamers go, I'm part of a small, (but much more cooler, kernel re-compiling) group. Regardless, I would seriously doubt John Carmack himself would hold back his technology on someone's card (ATI), just because they most likely did steal from them. God knows I would if I was in his place, not only because their dumb, canadian theifs (The worst kind, because many Canadians are nice, and the Kids in the Hall rocks, eh word up homie) But because of the fact that yes they have SHIT for opengl driver support, AND their Linux support is next to non-existant.

They provide like 3 RPM's, and if your lucky even whatever distro (some god awful old mandrake or redhat setup most likely) that the packages are intented for will come through.

NVidia has support for MANY operating systems (FreeBSD, 32 and 64 and AMD64 Bit Linux, oh yeah, and that windows thing)

I myself am opting for a 6800 Ultra if I can find one in time, for my Slackware Linux Box running a gig of ram and an AMD64 3200+. It will be replacing my 5900 (5950 overclocked with a bios upgrade to the card) that I was able to installed with a screwdriver, and a simple installtion script from Nvidia.com, or an ebuild in my old Gentoo days (last week).

To any computer gamer, I recommend an NVIDIA card, even if you are on Windows. I have tried both brands of cards in both environments, and yes OpenGL performance on ATI is terrible. So yes, ATI will have a harder time playing this game.

Buy a 6800 GT. If you can, go for the 6800 GT OC from BFG, overclocked out of the box. Enjoy DooM3.

In addition, not only do both brands of cards have their own set of rendering paths for their older models, the r200 and nv20 path, for the geforce 3/4 and 8500/9000 cards respectivly, but the latest of both brands run on Carmacks ARB2 path, a set of more generalized (arb=arbitrary im supposing) extenstions. Its the total package path, and its called, and whoever said the that ati ran slow because it didnt have its own specific paths is a moron.
