I think you're confusing "fundamental" with "universal". Steam has a fundamental problem: Requiring, at least one time, authentication over the internet to play the game (in single-player only).
It lacks a universal problem: Some people have no problems, while others have nearly constant problems.
I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. But it is a SAD day when a company implements a protection scheme that punishes paying customers, and rewards hackers.
Hacking things is fun for some; Valve is providing a thrill. And after one 1337 h4xx0r figures it out, no one else need do any work to get a free, unimpeded game!
Ummmm...since when was the objective to get people to use Firefox and only Firefox? The idea is to draw marketshare from IE and basically make the browser market more balanced. I say that we should have a large choice of browsers, hopefully each with its own unique bugs.
Face it people: FIrefox has bugs, and the reason we're safe with it is because it's better for attackers to go after the largest marketshare product (IE). When Firefox gets bigger, it will be much more heavily targetted.
WHAT THE FUCK??
How the hell did we get from copyrights to objectifying women, racism, and general stupidity?
Thoughts like this are why I don't like stating my sex and race online, and why I think the human race is screwed in the long run.

Well, good idea: Idiots will be killed off relatively early through their dumb actions
Bad idea: A bunch of the smart ones left are gonna be assholes, just like they are now!
I think you've missed the definition of the word 'literally'. You haven't used the word hogwash anywhere else in that piece, than in your explanatory conclusion. Therefore, you should say 'essentially nothing' or some such, instead of 'literally hogwash'.

For reasons still unknown to my conscious mind, I actually gave in to the hype and purchased an iPod 20GB, gen 4. Ever since then (it has been nearly 4 months now), I find that I can't live without the damned thing.
Yea, I hear ya, Cobalt. I did exactly the same thing! In fact, I'm listening to the damn thing now. Even though I'm sitting at a perfectly good computer.....
And I think I came even farther. There was a time that I didn't care about music much at all, let alone enough to shell out $300 for a device dedicated almost completely to MP3 playback....although it's also useful as a hard disk!
I actually compiled this about a week ago, seems like. Took me about 20 hours of course (like 15 without QT, seems like)....
It seemed a little bit unstable to me, but then, I've never been great at diagnosing the exact problem in Linux =)
How much of this is GPL/legal to modify? I'm wondering when we'll be seeing forks from this, and/or integration of the physics or something into other FOSS software?
I know the answer!!! Windows!! *gag*....
It's always said that failure is very important to science, and Windows is a perfect demonstration of how to do some things very well, while failing in the ways that normal users have no idea how to deal with. =P
OK....sex discussions on Slashdot, especially when half of the guys here won't see a vagina after birth (not counting jpgs, sorry)....kinda pointless. Anyhow, figuring things out yourself is half the fun!
This brings to mind the non-existence of Doublem, the death of Nine-times, and Tackhead's trilogy exploring the ramifications: Slashdot, The Computers, and Everything, Where DoubleM Went Wrong, Some More of DoubleM's Greatest Mistakes, and Who Is This DoubleM Person Anyway?
I've never seen production- quality work from MS....how is this any different?
I know how you can stay lazy! EMP the thing! (Just make sure you don't have any important electronics in the room =P)
You sell your soul to Satan inc, and various other corporate entities
to steal our stuff. Therefore, you should trust us....to bug your computer! HA! HAHA!
I'll believe it when I see it myself.
I had this built and installed before the slashdot post. Go me!!

I remember reading about this last year, actually. I think all that changed is that they have a better, more collected website now.

Remember /.'ers, there is a difference between their, there, and they're! You think English is bad? Try Chinese!
Hmmm.....seems to me that they're assuming an available pool of 100 Quintillion or so programmers...Google had better check its math!
No, the decrease in shootings in DC decreased because of the precogs, duh!
I DON'T LIKE SPAM!
That's wrong, AC. If we wanted to think of our parents as real people, don't you think we would've already??
No!! If you shut off the breaker, your multiply redundant UPS's will only run for a couple of days!
