Hey! I was about to try posting a story about how to build your own rudimentary keyboard. It's completely configurable to your own personal tastes and can be done with nothing more than a few small wires, a bunch of springs and some small stones. Talk about portable, whenever you want to take it places you can just sweep it all into a bag and set it up again when you get where you're going.

The knowledge of what colors and color combinations work for the mind is very useful, but the skill of being able to change the colors is trivial. The default colors are generally acceptable so by the time a student is old enough to be creating presentations where the color is realy important they should also be old enough to figure out how to change the colors without taking a class on powerpoint.

No, teaching irrelevant information at schools is ruining the kids! Maybe we should start by defining "irrelevant." Mr. History seems to think that anything that he has students asking "when am I going to use this" about is irrelevant. By that definition your statement would be wrong. Lots of that stuff is exactly what the kids need. (BTW I hold essentially the same degree he does - MS vs MA) I think we should focus on the fact that kids are inherantly curious. All of that information, given when their curiosity is engaged would not be seen as irrelevant. The stuff that is truly irrelevant, such as how to change the font color in theit PPT, is distracting from the mathematics, history, language education, philosophy, etc. that will help them to think and function in this "real world." The key is to teach kids to think, to solve problems, and to meet challenges head on. That can be done with technology or without it, but that must be done or our education is irrelevant no matter how relevant the material was.

There's always a third option for the truth of the story. It's possible that there was nobody at the FBI who was involved with this case who had enough technical expertise to know how much more they could have done, short of confiscating the server, to get the information they were seeking. I can't guess the number of times that legal authorities overreact based on insufficient information. We can hardly blame them. If you think about it, who would be the first to get blamed when something goes wrong? If we had another terrorist attack from the sky the first thing you would hear on the news would be a top FBI person covering the agency by explaining how they were doing everything they could legally do to gather information and prevent that very accident.

We have TLD's for countries. What if we had an IP version of a TLD assigned to each root server so that they can only assign IP's that include their root identification. Excuse the fact that this is a very hastily contrived proposal. The real question is, can the problems of decentralized root servers be solved?

  10. In Theory on EU Domain Registries & ICANN · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't have anything against ICANN, but it seems to me that a decentralized system of root servers is right in line with the nature of the internet. I'm not sure how good or bad this would turn out to be compared to the current system, but in theory it seems to be consistent with the core ideas of the internet.

"Opera is configured by default to identify itself as Internet Explorer" Even if Opera's numbers are deflated because of this practice they still have fewer users at my site than Firefox. If every hit reported as IE were a hit for Opera it would be less than Firefox. Perhaps they should stop complaining and get to making a better browser. I will admit that Opera has its good points, but they were not enough to keep me as a user.

Has anyone ever considered that pirating may be the excuse that they needed to continue making lousy movies. They don't have to face up to the fact that the movies suck, they just blame their problems on "internet piracy" because they assume that if you download a movie you must want it. Who would ever steal something they hate? The funny thing about that logic is that if you download a movie that you would never buy they don't lose anything but they can legally claim that they have lost something.
