  1. Th problem is... on Blockbuster's Offensive Against Netflix Flops · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem is that BB has a reputation for fake late fees. I know what finally made me stop renting from them years ago was that they would charge late fees on movies that were returned on time. This combined with their editing of movies, and the fact that it was clear they were trying to trick their customers by offering 3 'night' rentals, and counting both the rental and return nights as full nights, just made me give up on them. When they started their 'no late fees' scam, I didn't even bother to look into them. Apparently that was the right move.

As for your laptop experience. Did you know that people in all sorts of industries get that kind of treatment? Did you know tht doctors get asked by people they don't know for medical advice? Did you know that lawyers get asked by people they don't know for legal advice? That's right. Your problem isn't that people ask for computer advice. It is that people ask for advice. Again you attribute a non-technical problem to the tech. That is a neo-luddite attitude.

You did ad hypocrate to the description though. You complain about people talking about computers in a restaurant, then tell how when YOU talked about computers someone bothered YOU. You seem to have a serious case of the 'my shade of gray is better than your shade of gray's'

  10. It's worse than that... on Gender Gap in Computer Science Growing · · Score: 1

"Raise girls to be princesses and moms, and you get women who's highest goals are domestic crap and social climbing." It's worse than that. Most little girls are raised to be prostitutes, and THAT is where the problem is. Irrelevent of gender, there is a huge portion of our population that would give up working immediatly if they could have a steady flow of income without it. Most of these people would be more than happy to shake their dirty bits to keep that steady flow of income. This becomes even more pronounced if society joins in on the mass denial of what they are doing.

Now, historically, given that due to various reasons, men have controlled the wealth, and women have controlled the sex. Women are in a greater position to exachange sex, and more importantly the implication that sex could happen, for cash, goods, and most importantly, preferential treatment.

Now, given that the group "women" is a subset of the group "people", a large portion of them will use sex to avoid work. This happens not because they are women, but because they are people, and being a woman gives them the choice.

Unfortunatly, this is taugh to our children. As children, little boy know to get rich they need to make money. As children, little girls know that to get rich, they can make money, or marry a rich man. This leads to a general feeling that financial things will work themselves out, and thus the kind of behaviour that that belief generates.

When half of the women know that they don't HAVE to work to keep a good lifestyle, is it suprising that there are less of them going into fields that require hard work and planning?

As much as I think IBM should just compile Notes with the WineLib (they already run Notes on Wine internally), I don't expect it to happen. (even in a browser) Well, Java didn't pan out as expected, and Lotus pulled back on the cross platformness of their client.

*****I know that Java has come a long way. I am speaking historically.

Well, I believe that when IBM made another push for the the Notes client rewrite in Java, they promised less and coded more. They knew that a complete rewrite was a HUGE job, so they started Workplace. (Now called the Workplace Managed Client) It is being released for Linux, and has a Notes Client plugin. So Notes will be availible for Linux, it will just be called Workplace.

  17. Siblings... on Gene Found That May Affect IQ in Males · · Score: 1

While I agree the genetics does have an impact on intellegence, the reason that simblings with vastly different IQs exist is because contrary to PC belief, very few parents actually treat all of their children the same. First children tend to be more restricted in what they are allowed to do, and last children tend to be more pampered and thus have to do less. Obviously this is not absolute, and you can make your own determination as to what these environmental effects have on children, but it is common.

The answer to the age old question of environment or genetics is an obvious "Yes".

Add on to that laws that prevent parents from teaching kids that there are reprecussions for your actions, and you just might turn this decline in youth crime around.
