I'm not trying to say that Linux, or some kind of OSS solution is not appropriate, but you're talking about costs here, and the benefit that the handful of individuals who will be able to decipher the kernel, which they can download for free anyway given any OS solution, isn't the most important factor in this decision.
It's like saying we should clean up the environment so that we don't have to look at dead fish washing up on shore.. Yes, that's true, and it would be nice to do that, but there's more important factors as to why we should clean up the environment.
Saying that hiding the source for an Operating System from the general public robs them of learning is like saying keeping Quantum Physics textbooks away from six year olds robs them of learning.
Gates switches to a Gilette Razor...
Why do we care what type of computer the leaders of the tech sector are using? This is no better than preteen girls wanting the same kind of Jeans that one of the Olsen twins wear.
That you have a 10 cm wire that works like a floppy disk, and has the same capacity, except you can't read from it. You compare the magnetic switch technique to CDs, which are optical, and state that this will replace the DVD, even though the highly inaccurate 10 gig capacity is only marginally better than Dual layer DVDs, and we have HD-DVD and Bluray coming out shortly (i.e. before they figure out how to read the data), which will smoke DVDs anyway.
WHY IS THIS POSTED ON SLASHDOT!?
How many people run WEBSERVERS out of their house? That's not the point of the study, XP et al. not the Microsoft Server product, Server 2003 is. Few Desktop Linux users use Redhat Enterprise Server either.
I'm a.NET Developer during my Coop terms, I'm confused as to what you mean by your statement, as C# is Case Sensitive, so I don't know how you can assume a case insensitive system to port to, if you're not porting from one. Can you clarify please?
"Writing Linux applications is not a simple endeavor. The Linux operating system provides a sophisticated framework for running programs, and learning how to take advantage of that framework requires some research."
Oh boy, doesn't that just sound like fun.
Firstly Bringing a game to market is extraordinarly expensive, and you won't see game development on the scale or quality of Windows games for Linux until a large number of users (read: not/.ers) Switch to Linux, it's not profitable to do so. Secondly, Linux needs a strong abstraction layer that's as powerful and easy to use as DirectX. The ones out there now aren't up to par yet. One day perhaps, but not one day soon. While some people are satisfied with Quake 3 and a handful of others for Linux, most people want to be able to run the gamut.
I suspect you're right. I suspect Google wants to have a monopoly on the Network experience, so that your whole information life lies in their borders. But they won't charge you to use it. They'll charge companies to advertise to you while you are using it.
I'm about to invest in a nice 19-inch monitor, but I want a TV-Tuner built in and connections for my Consoles, anyone have a recommendation? The current winner is Samsung's Syncmaster 192MP
If you're willing to shell out the 1200 bucks for the state of the art processor, you're probably willing to invest in some form of Noise Dampening for 50 bucks.
But I don't really care a whole lot about what the bloody Wattage rating is on my Processor. I care if it can cook along bloody fast, and what features it has. Low Power CPUs are only a concern if my computer is running off a battery. On my desktop, feel free to ramp up the wattage if you can somehow use that to speed up my baby.
Is that if everyone switched, then Virus writers would simply target them instead. Ditto Linux. Don't fool yourself guys, the Viruses aren't there because people aren't writing them. Because the world uses Windows. If the world used something else, the viruses will move there instead.
Treo 650.
Leave the Greater Toronto Area alone..
Anybody know how the grammar checkers in alternative office suites are? Star Office, Open Office, Word Perfect, etc.?
*shakes fist*

Big deal. Engadget was Talking about this last year

Where our legal system would throw that crap out of court faster than you can blink an eye.
Awesome. Oh well, Google will eat them in 10 years or so anyway.

I'm using a Treo 600. For all those out there with PDA2Ks and Kyocera Devices that are both a PDA and a cellphone, does that contribute to both?
That... was incoherant. Like Anti-Glue.

Agreed if you're running a data center, or if you have a large business with hundreds of these things, I meant more for personal use.

Sounds like what I felt like during Calculus 3.
