Cluster systems are configured by connecting multiple systems with a communications medium, referred to as an interconnect. OpenVMS Cluster systems communicate with each other using the most appropriate interconnect available. In the event of interconnect failure, OpenVMS Cluster software automatically uses an alternate interconnect whenever possible. OpenVMS Cluster software supports any combination of the following interconnects:

CI (computer interconnect) (Alpha and VAX)

DSSI (Digital Storage Systems Interconnect) (Alpha and VAX)

SCSI (Small Computer Storage Interconnect) (storage only, Alpha and limited support for I64)

FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) (Alpha and VAX)

We got an upgrade offer after giving up on Dragon many versions ago. The version 8 release is actually worthwhile.

  6. Quality of Sound on Why Sony Should've Put Its Weight Behind Hi-MD · · Score: 2, Insightful
The big pro is that ATRAC just sounds better than MP3. I can hear the difference. I've had 3 (Sharp) MD players over the years and I travel with one today.

The big failure is Sony's attempt to lock in their own lame software, restrict the functionality, and limit the use of MD. These would have been a great challenge to the Zip disks 10 years ago. Imagine being able to move data and music back and foward on a USB port.

Instead Sony tried to lock MD down, limited licenses to a few partners, and starved any reason to inovate. Sharp is dropping out of the MD business in the US. It's the same story as Betamax, another better quality standard killed by corporate lockdown. You can only buy a limited number of units.

I'll keep using MD until the next big thing comes along. After all, I still have cassette tapes and vinyl. Some of which I've archived on CD. As far as portable music goes Sony blew this big time.

    fuller, more entertaining experience

Only if having people shouting, hearing a scene by screne review going out on cell phones, listening to the 2 girls try to figure out why he dumped here behind me . . . can be considered full of entertainment .

Theaters have jacked up their prices and made the environment less attractive. When I go to a movie I want to see and hear the movie. Laughing with the crowd can be part of that. Having sound bleed between broom closets because they built the latest mega-multi-plex without sound insulation to save a buck means I won't go back. The last movie I took a date to had a mother and three kids in the audience. One cried for 2 hours, one wanted to go home and go to bed Mommy I'm tired can I go to bed, Mommy I want to go home now, I want to go to sleep . The last one just ran up and down the aisles and jumped over seats. Netflix costs less for my monthly charges, the home benefits have already been covered so I'll just say "me too" about that subject.

The experience of going to a movie just isn't a good one any longer. When I lived in DC many years ago, there were 2 cinema-taverns in the area. Older 1 screen places that had gutted the seats and put in comfortable booth/couches. The concession stand was in side the viewing area, but glassed over so the sound wouldn't spread. They served liquor and hot food at reasonable bar prices. Since it was licensed as a bar, no larva allowed. There were bar maids to take orders before the movie, no talking once film rolled, you went and got your own. They showed second run stuff and had a good regular crowd. That was worth the ticket price. For now, it's either Netflix or TCM.

  9. CD - Yes, Mass Market CD - No on Is the Physical CD Still A Viable Market? · · Score: 4, Interesting
Mass market music is fading away. The days of the 50,000 watt AM station manufacturing hits still make corp-rat music market-teers drool. But in today's world more and more people are opting out of listening to "clearchannel inc" and The HitList(c). Independent artists can create their own recordings in the garage studio, establish web sites, host music downloads and replace the giant distributors. If you only sell 10,000 pressings you're not worth investing in to big music, on the other hand, 10,000 pressings for half a dozen albums is a tidy sum for a single artist. On other words, the long tail is stretching out as the lump in belly of the beast is digested.

I buy more music now a days, although none of it from labels the RIAA ever made a dime from. I just got back from a music festival in Northern California and picked up a dozen albums on physical CDs. Many musicians now have their own web site and market on CDBaby. Despite free downloads and live taping allowed, sales were brisk. I'm one the minority who believes MP3 sound is inadequate, so if I like it, I'll buy it. More so from an artist who runs his own label and will see something from the sale.

You don't stay in prison very long, just long enough for a tissue match and to fill in all the order blanks.

  18. Joss is a Story Teller on Independents Push For Second Firefly Season · · Score: 1
In stories, people die. It hurt when Shepard Book died. I expected Joss to take the life of a prime character. Nothing seems to be sacred to except to tell a captivating story. When Book died, I stopped waiting for a death, and then he went killed Wash. D*mn. The death of these characters breath life into the story in way that the magic reset button of Voyager/Enterprise can't touch. That's why Buffy/Angel are in in twice a day reruns on multiple channels. That's why I own the Firefly DVDs. It's about telling a story. There are enough story lines already out there to make prequel/sequel in between-quels.

If Joss makes it, my family and I will watch it. I'd love to buy the a DVD set of season.

    It depends

The always on target response. In the IT field you need to always be learning. Some of this time will come out of your time, although you should get some training allowance.

One company I worked for had a great training budget, but no one could ever get training approved. I got a major P.O. for a year long training pass signed by a departing manager. After that manager couldn't approve training any more. You may have to travel for training.

As previously noted, document your requests and show what benefit the company gets from training. When a problem shows up, instead of jumping on the fix, pull open volume 1 of the doc set and and start a page by page search for the error message. This works really well with multi volume manuals. Explain that the 10 minute fix is in here someplace, I know I can find it.

Don't forget user forums and usenet. I document my time on usenet as training and research. Google groups is your friend.

Shipping? Customer sign off? At lunch time he'd buy lunch for the next project over. Somedays he'd need someone to drive him to Frys and look around. You've got a truck, let's drive down this afternoon. He knew more about what everbody was doing than anyone else I've ever reported to. He was only only a fair coder, an incredible hardware geek but an outstanding manager. Later on he was laid off in a merger and the company added a new project manager group staffed with people who didn't know the the customers or products. They lost 60 percent of their customers before I bailed.

  24. Early Exam on Your Best Exam Stories? · · Score: 1
I was a lab assistant for a freshman Fortran class during the early 80's. The instructor would lecture to an auditorium and then my class would meet in groups of 2 dozen or so. There was a lot of anxiety about the format of an exam so I went through an old exam I had had with a different instructor. Line by line we spent a class going over every question and answer.

On the mid term day, I looked down at the exact same exam. Standard distribution of scores, even with the answers read out in class my teaching didn't much impact test scores.

Steno pad - Start a new date every morning, log calls and notes each day. This has a historical advantage. Also good for jotting down the fix that took all day to research, some day that will get proper documention. You need to establish a routine for this. Easy to move around with you.

Desktop calendar - Jot down calls, meetings, "what I did" for each day. In your face, but can be tough to carry.

Text file/spreadsheet - Needs to be available. I work in multiple locations, desktop/laptop/customer systems/internal servers on different networks. Not a fan.

PDA - a shade better, not as in your face. Needs batteries & synch plan. I prefer the steno pad approach. No batteries and easy to carry about, tucks nicely in my travel bag. We bill customers in 15 minute slices.
