Was it some guy from 127.0.0.1? I used Zone Alarm once and that guy was always trying to hack me. To bad I showed him, I made a batch file and pinged him thousands of times a second. Then my computer lagged so I stopped but I think I probably got him pretty good. /sarcasm

And at that point, why not just keep it out the whole time so everybody knows how cool you are.

I remember in the playstation days there were quite a few popular titles that required switching disks (Final fantasy games, grand turismo, metal gear solid etc.) and I don't own a single game that uses multiple dual layer DVDs for actual gameplay. Maybe I just got lucky and didn't buy one but to me that is a sign that the format is not quite dead yet and we don't need to worry about HD-DVD game content.

This game gets triple the press of games that are 100 times more popular (yes I made this stat up but it is probably close to true). According to http://www.mmogchart.com/ it had 45,000 players at the last time they counted and it seems like every week there is a news article, TV segment or slashdot post about Second Life. Is somebody tipping these people off or something? Sure it offers a currency exchange for US dollars, but so does Everquest 2 and Entropia universe, along with countless games that have a black market for such thing. You can run businesses? Oh wait, I think I recall setting up a shop and selling customized goods in Star Wars Galaxies 3 years ago. Players can create things? Well how about trying to modding tools that come with almost every game that isn't an MMORPG these days, creat all you want. To me it just seems like people are playing a glorified chatroom, but maybe that appeals to some. It still doesn't explain why this game gets so much attention.

What about the people who run 2560x1600 resolution on their 30" monitors? I am sure they would want a card like this. I have a 24" monitor that runs at 1920x1200 and if I want to run games with the highest settings and anti-aliasing and AF, I would "need" one too. Nobody "needs" a Ferrari but there are certainly people who will buy one and max it out, just like people will buy this card and find a way to crank up the graphics high enough to get the frames per second to drop all the way down to the minimum playable rate of 30-40 FPS (maybe more or less depending on what kind of game you are playing).

If you are worried so much about the backwards compatible games, you probably already had an xbox. If you already had an xbox and love those games so much, keep it plugged in. Pretty simple really. I am sure there are just as many people with a 360 that don't want time being wasted by making "old" games as there are people with the old xbox who want to have some new games for their system.

  13. Re:Overpriced, but models not that much different on Sony's Conference The Day After · · Score: 1

People need to keep in mind that the PS3 is expected to last quite some time, probably past their next TV upgrade. When 2010 rolls around and you are heading to best buy to pick up a new 42" 1080P plasma for 600 bucks, do you really want to spend even more money to upgrade your PS2? Of course by that time you will probably be able to get a good stand alone 1080P BRD player for 200 to 300 bucks, but a 100 dollar upgrade right now might be nice so you don't have to worry about it later.

  14. Xbox isn't ALL graphics on Sony's Conference The Day After · · Score: 2, Interesting

The xbox 360 has brought a lot of new things to the table in addition to some sweet graphics and sound for the home theater/HDTV crowd. I would definately call the concept of Xbox Live arcade a success and it is something that hasn't been done before. Not only that but they make it easy for people to check out new games without having to buy the latest issue of "Overpriced Console Magazine Monthly" through the use of demos and trailers. Don't forget the fact that you can push the X button in the center of the controller and talk to some friends while your games are loading, change music, or see what gamerscore you want to shoot for when you are ready to go. Then there is the fact that you can use the box as a Media Center extender, making it even more useful in your home. I know a lot of people here are not very big fans of the work that Uncle Bill does, but the technological advancements in making gaming a more social atmosphere through the use of xbox live cannot be denied.

I don't see how making PS2 open source would help them at all. Everybody on the planet already knows what a PS2 is, even my aunt who refers to everything else as a "gameboy" so they don't need the publicity. Secondly, consoles hardly make any money through hardware sales. As we have seen with the PS1, sony will continue to pump out games for quite some time and any free games would really cut into those sales. Sony still sells their old games and people still buy them. I know quite a few people who buy nothing but the games in the Greatest Hits lineup because they are affordable, all of these games could be considered old games. You keep talking about a resurgance of support and I never even noticed that "support" left in the first place.

Few gold farmers are freelance, most of them are working for somebody and getting paid for meeting a quota every day or week. If a farmer had to pay to use the machine they are at and pay for an account with subscription the whole process would not be nearly as profitable. And if the money in china is anything like the US, it would be hard to get any kind of bank account or paypal if you were underage. Since it is only teenagers being banned, I think it is safe to say that your gold will still be available.
