  1. Facebook is Evil on Can Facebook Keep Large-Scale Misinformation From the Free World? (sfgate.com) · · Score: 1

My wife an dI deleted our Facebook accounts when the Cambridge Analytica thing was exposed. Prior to that we only used Facebook to stay informed of what was going on with distant family members. We rarely posted to Facebook and then it was just to respond to something a family member had posted. I also have avoided buying an Oculus and went with a Vive because of Facebook's ownership.
We're just a couple of people in a massive user base but every little bit helps.
Facebook's role in spreading lies and disinformation is criminal and they must be held accountable. Look at the horrors abroad where Facebook was instrumental in genocide.
They are a privately held company and as such, they can censor people, moderate posts and remove users. They are not the government and are not held to the 1st Amendment's freedom of speech. If they wanted, they could do an exceptional job of cleaning up the mess they created but they won't because it cuts into profits. It's incredibly disgusting that Facebook places money above their own country's well-being and above the lives of marginalized people in the world.

I was going to say something similar.. The companies just pass the cost along to consumers who are the ones paying this. So, the last tax cuts significantly benefitted the most wealthiest in America with the average American seeing a very minor increase in take-home pay. Now, to pay for that tax cut (because it is really screwing the country over with a massive debt), a new tax is implemented via the tariffs which places the bulk of the onus upon the 99% of Americans who now lose their very minor increase in take-home pay AND lose even more of their pay to pay for the increased cost of goods. So, the tax burden was placed directly upon those who can least afford it. This isn't just Trump, it's the Republicans in Congress who allow, and and defend him. When the dust settles, they will all blame Trump but they should be held accountable for their tacit (and often explicit) support of all he has done and said.

  3. It is impossible to believe the Facebook did not know what was happening. They have every bit of data around their users including the variety of tracking methods which they employ so they can analyze what they get and identify what places these various users visit, where they are most likely located, etc. They could easily have stopped the Russian trolls, CA, and many others who were abusing the data which Facebook offers and the platform for communicating with others.
It's staggering to see companies so willing to sell out their country to make money. I remember a time when showing patriotism beat out personal gain. Now, we have companies like Facebook and the politicians (Republicans) in congress who put their personal agenda and gain above all else (including their own country) and it's truly depressing.

I'm sure Nokia was happy to see MS buy up their company and then ditch everything as well.. Nokia made a mistake hiring their CEO from MS and should not have been surprised to see where things went after that (although it may have been the plan all along)..

This is lying through omission. I warned my family members who I had purchased movie pass for and advised that they ditch the service.
How anyone can believe any kind of explanation / excuse or anything they say going forward is beyond me. Are you sure they aren't tracking your movements at other times?
Also, I hate the BS they are pulling with movie theatre companies, blacking out some titles in order to squeeze money out of them. This just gets passed onto customers (non-movieopass customers)

My wife and I both work from home (for different companies). No more sitting in traffic or getting stuck on a subway (all wasted time). I never cared much for hanging out with co-workers (one reason I decided to work on networking and servers is I rarely have to deal with people). Another upside is a reduced risk of getting sick. If you aren't jammed on a bus or subway train with 100's of other people (some of whom are sick), you stand a much better chance of avoiding catching whatever they're spreading (although my kids do keep me exposed to whatever they catch at school so..). The benefits of working from home outweigh the benefits of working in an office in my opinion and extensive experience.

Working from home does require an amount of discipline in terms of working without supervision.

  7. Interesting looking back on Google Play Removed 700,000 Bad Apps In 2017, 70 Percent More Than In 2016 (venturebeat.com) · · Score: 2

It's always interesting to have a look back at the environment when Apple started with their tight controls over everything on the iPhone. Many people derided this heavy-handedness and wanted something which they could do anything to. Enter the Android-based smartphones which would allow people to install anything from anywhere. The dangers of such a platform for a smartphone became evident over the years and the push for users towards using Google's official source for apps (the Google Play Store) increased. Things which people have often criticized Apple for doing often got implemented soon afterwards. I'm not saying Apple is perfect or makes the best decisions and this isn't about singing their praises. Apple knew the importance around keeping tight control over what is allowed to be installed onto the iOS devices, particularly as it relates to security and stability. (yes, I know they also stand to benefit from these decisions as well). So, here we are with Google screening apps and rejecting apps before they get to the Google Play Store, much like Apple did and does with iOS. I tend to thing that any security-conscious Android user urges those they know to only use apps from the Google Play Store for security reasons and to save users from installing malware riddled apps on their phones.

This also differs greatly from PC's (before someone says "but what about PC's where you can install anything you want!!") PC's don't delay or lock out critical OS updates the way the heavily fragmented Android smartphone industry does.

  8. Instead of these random boxes, do one of two things.
    1) Allow all to have the same items (remember the good old days when this was the case?).
    2) Allow the purchase of specific items for a set price instead of the gamble method of hoping to hit it big.

I prefer option 1. Devs can go back to the ways of making a game which is balanced with all of the items in the game being available to everyone from the start. This can be furthered through level based weapons where one gains access to these upgrades over time as your characters level up. This option does open itself up to abuses by the game company by making progress painfully slow with the option to pay to advance quicker but then this devolves to become option 2 at this point so I don't consider the slow progression with pay to speed up as option 1.

I don't like Option 2 as it closes out the game to those who can't afford to pour a lot of money into the game just to get access to items which the other richer players can. Ideally, charge the full price for the game and be done. If they want to charge less, then charge less and give an option for a one-time purchase to get the rest of the content (kind of like how Doom was initially distributed)

I've avoided many, many games which I would absolutely love to play because of the ongoing gouging of players. It sucks (because there are some really amazing looking games out there) but I'm not pouring an endless stream of money into a game just to be able to enjoy it / enjoy it at a reasonable pace.

Of course, this then nullifies the convenience factor and would see people returning to their local stores instead. Sorry Amazon, the price of your market gains is that your deliveries will get stolen now and then. This is such a false equivalency.. A delivery driver in a marked van, walks up to your house, opens the door and enters.. That's equivalent to driving a vehicle into the house's wall how? Yeah, no differences at all. Nobody would notice one over the other. They are both equal in drawing attention because delivery drivers are as ubiquitous as fast driving vehicles smashing into houses..

I mean no company would ever expose millions of its customers to potential harm! (yeah, that was all sarcasm).. For the sake of having Amazon deliver a package into your house instead of leaving it at your door, would people really add this to their house?! Comparing this to a thief with a screwdriver who can break into your house when they want is ridiculous. This is a case of granting explicitly allowing a stranger into your house which is not an illegal act for them. What's to stop them from doing anything else? (not everyone has cameras inside to monitor what happens). Take something of value, rummage through drawers or stir the jug of iced tea in the refrigerator with their dick.. You'll never know (hey, you might even like your iced tea better for some reason after they also decided to take a piss into it).. If someone enters your house without your permission, it's illegal right away. If they break in, you'll notice and the neighbors might notice too.. There's just so much to go wrong with this from a technology perspective as well as the human side. It's not worth it (I don't care how much Amazon discounts their service as an enticement). Interesting observations would be to see if they unnecessarily access files and folders unrelated to the issue. Tesla needs to change the name of this feature as it is being taken too literally by people (even though they are told how it is intended to function and what is expected of them). Leave the feature in tact but perhaps also push a brief video which plays on that big screen of theirs which explains the feature and the risks involved in not being attentive. Lately, Telsa may wish to do something to check the driver's attentiveness at varying intervals. (kind of like how long string highways introduce curves now and then so that drivers maintain vigilance and don't get sleepy etc.

Taking away a safety feature like this would be like removing seat belts from cars because in some rare instances, a person can get injured or die as a result of wearing the seatbelt during some type of accident or because a person wore the belt incorrectly. I know people who opted to not wear seatbelt because of this very reasoning. Airbags have caused deaths due to improper use (rear facing child car seats in the front passenger side, people being too close to the steering wheel during an airbag deployment, etc. but they are still in cars and people still have the option to go against instructions and warnings by placing that child car seat in the front passenger seat.. People similarly, can still opt to take their hands off the wheel so they can read, watch movies or anything else while the car is in the "autopilot" mode but if they do, they risk the same results.. death injury or damage to property.

Let's not remove safety features because of poor choices from a couple of people..

I had long ago thought that Netflix should do something to allow off-hours downloading to allow people to watch these shows during their normal evening hours. This would help ease the complaints that ISP's often voiced (and took action against) around the network being overused during prime time viewing hours. If a person could queue up a few movies or shows which they wanted to watch the next day, the system could download them overnight. This would also help improve the experience for people with slower internet connections in that the show would not experience delays during playback or suffer from quality degradation as the system compensates for lower bandwidth availability etc.

I assumed the major limitation for this would be around what licensing would allow Netflix to do. There would also be hardware changes required (for storage) but that could be addressed in future hardware refreshes for devices such as Apple TV etc.
