My tv has 2 hdmi ports as well as a optical output. I don't have the cash for a speaker system yet, but I assume I can just run the optical cable to my reciever and the TV will foward the correct digital audio signal to it. You still get all of the 5.1 goodness, but with only 1 audio cable.
Another part of the flawed comparison is that much of the article talks about how the ps3 launch is in better shape than the 360 launch. While that may be true, the ps3 isn't going against the 360 launch, its going at it a year later.
Maybe, but that hardly validates the parent's critisim of the xbox costing $100 extra for wifi when its a non-issue for most people using the platform.
Why do I need a wifi connection for a console? Mine don't travel very often and I'd prefer the lower latencey and higher reliability of a wired connection anyway.
An HDMI and component cables aren't the same thing. Both carry an HD video signal but I believe HDMI can also carry audio, and it supports some of that evil DRM. I don't think the Wii or the 360 even have HDMI ports, though the premium 360 comes with component cables.
The AI card won't work for the same reason the physics card won't work. I'm not buying another card. PC gamers already need to spend an extra $200-500 for a graphics card in addition to the rest of the computer. I'm fine with that, but like hell if I'm buying 2 other cards for other features. The only chance these things have is if they get it all onto one card.
This argument isn't even remotely reasonable anymore. Look at all the reviews and all the benchmarks. These aren't theoretical numbers. Its actual performance on actual hardware using actual drivers. Drivers that apparently work well on many games. ATI windows drivers have been fine for the last 3 years.
Is this true? Can someone point me to a review or critique of the 360 from a media center standpoint? I think I remember a few from when it launched, but has anything changed with software updates?
I'd buy a 360 today if it gave me the chance to play Panzer Dragoon Saga.

While I agree with the parent in that you would be foolish not to do a clean install, it does seem backwards that someone who paid more for XP pro has to lose all their files while XP home users do not. It doesn't sound like a technical limitation at all.
Yeah, but what was the leap from N64 to gamecube? Or ps1 to ps2? Those were almost entirely horsepower leaps.
Again, I dont have one and I'm probably talking out of my ass, but from what I've seen, Live is just slick. Its entirely integerated, arcade seems cool, and marketplace is breaking new ground (though I'm not sure what I think of it). If Microsoft can work it into a viable media center (i've seen mixed reviews of that aspect) I'd jump all over it. So yea, its mainly a horsepower leap but thats on top of a pretty nice base of refinement and new functionality, which is more than the systems I mentioned above can say.
The new xbox gets very little credit for what its done. There seems to be a more attention being paid to the potential success of the Wii and the potential dissaster of the ps3 than to the 360. It seems to me that Microsoft has been playing this round very well, with upcoming games that show of its power, live/live arcade, reasonable price (at least in comparison to its most direct competitor), and they still have trouble getting some praise.
(I dont know where my bias comes from, I dont even have a 360)
While I've haven't done as much reading as I could have, my impression of the Wii showing was, while they had a ton of stuff, much of it was fluff/demolike. Can anyone point me to some of the more promising, substantial games (besides smash brothers, which looks super cool)?
I kinda wonder if Microsoft is actually concerned with the HD-DVD drive selling well anyway. Even if nobody buys it, as long as they make it available at a reasonable price then its another bullet point for them when stacked up against the ps3.
Level 1 and 2 were tutorial, and not really fun until toward the end of level 2. In level 3, in a ridiculous game design decision, your creature is stolen, taking the best part of the game away right as it gets fun. Level 4 is just hell, with fire raining from the sky and everything dying. At this point, the game goes from not fun, to just frustrating, and I stopped playing.
Its unfortunate, somewhere between level 2 and 3 you got the hint that there was a really great game here.
Firefox works with my linksys router's config pages just fine. And as for it crashing, I'm sure its happened, but I can't remember the last time.
You sir, get my amen. amen
Its pure marketing hype with respect to gaming, but it says this update will allow it to output 1080p hd-dvd signals.

GTA is no longer playstation exclusive and will be released at the same time on the 360.
Cut your losses. They don't want it.

Now I can play ps1 games on my already-backwards-compatable ps3!

Ahh, so you threw the change up. We got a crafty one here folks.
When/where was the HD-DVD drive price announced?

More bad news for you: WoW's free trial asks for a credit card anyway.
