we pay 550$/month +water, gas & eletric.
the fact is, with that cardboard or paper house,
you don't have utilities.. plumbing, gas, eletric, and so on.
i don't know how much more "convient" it could be..
if you lived in a cardboard house without anything.
fact is, the urban poor, many don't have homes.
then again, living a sheltered suburbian life isn't all that too difficult, is it?
"Affordable and sustainable housing option for students, artists and urban poor | recycled materials | waste reuse | transportable | cost AU$ 30K (US$ 20K) | made from paper pulp and recycled PET | simple assembly by occupants"
last i knew, and correct me if im wrong, but if a "urban poor" person or family, had 20k$,
i doubt they'd be so "urban poor" eh?
hell, i don't even have 1k$ to my name, much less 20k$!
i guess im rual poor?;)
--kingpunk
im sure you know what i meant, but let me be more direct:
what i meant was, it isn't exactly being productive,
if you're waiting like 20seconds for a word processing application to start up
and yes, there are many productive enviroments, that use *Word Programs,
but one mans productive, is another mans counter-production.
i too like abiword, but if you prelink your libraries and stuff,
with OOo you'd see a significant response time jump.
and another big issue with abiword is that it more often than not,
doesn't read or make compatable MS Documents. ...which sucks in any really "productive" enviroment.
its awfully funny, if im wanting to devlop or whatever with Xcode,
on windows.. it doesn't exactly stand for jack squat if its "free".
sure, its free if you run OSX 10.3+, damn shame i can use it to make Apple programs, via windows.
i guess i gotta buy that 2,000$+ box, to be able to get the Xcode ALONG with my OS.
free?..oh the irony!
--kingpunk
i think what would be more interesting, would be the honeypot approach
allow everything access to a virtual, world-writeable "registry" and "windows system files"
and it finds out that way, whats trying to actually do its "job",
and thus effectively keeping it from the local system, and blocking the ip/domain, permantly.
another person who should get the shoe up their arse would be
the "engineer" who "invisioned" the windows registry and how flawed and easily manipulated it is. ..try doing something like this on a Linux/BSD/UNIX(R)(TM)/BeOS box..
it doesn't exactly hold water.
but hey, thats just my $0.02!
--kingpunk
god bless satallite, where (most) people can get east, central, and west
versions of every boradcast then;)
so the program that starts at say, 9:11pm local on east coast,
won't be playing til about, 11:11pm, central..and so on.
seems like thats where the moneys at!;)
just making it my duty to incite!
pardon my idealist communistic mindset thinking that anything should be free, as in beer, of course
--kingpunk
well, i actually was meaning to point it either way.
but still, whats keeping me from uncercutting verizon, with my money,
and making a large-scale "COMMUNITY" WiFi network? ..i guess now, its law that is preventing me, not just
competitor threats, and competition in general.
how can that be any more right or wrong? and how can a court say?
fact is, its the FCC's job. nobody else.
--kingpunk
i would rather take liver failure at 1%, than HIV and death at 100%.
last i knew, its possible to get a replacement liver,
and Jesus H. Christ has since been long gone from earth, to bring my ass back to life.
small potential error vs. nearly certian death...
i'd take my chances!
--kingpunk
nope, you're right on the money.
but i believe that verizon is fighting saying that the community there in PA, can't sponsor a free,
"COMMUNITY" WiFi network, because it would dominate the airwaves, and essentially be anti-competitive.
atleast, thats my impression.
but then again, i think it should be free, totally.
but thats just my communistic blood begining to boil;)
--kingpunk
well, to make it more friendly,
i believe that there could be an array of preset
configurations that one could chose,
you know, something relatively similiar to redhat, e tc.
where they ask you, "server", "workstation", "internet box" or whatnot
and make it relatively simple, via these preset variables
to do what they must do, to set up the base system,
anything else, it seems like the user, would be on his or her own.
i also must add, that gentoo uses portage, its "port" of ports
package management system from the BSD mindset..
and there is now, a couple of viable gui-only, portage package management tools around,
such as: Porthole (http://porthole.sourceforge.net/), Guitoo (http://guitoo.sourceforge.net/), and a couple of others
but those two are the main players in their feild.
i just thought that i could & should shead some light on the subject,
in the even that a "newb" were to get discouraged or whatnot.
kind regaurds,
KingPunk
hey, isn't it possible now, to get some OS X images, from your OS X cd's, and start working to get them to boot..
because the game cube is from IBM's Power Arch..
so i don't see why it woulnt work!:)
a 99$ OSX Box? you kidding me?;)
sign me up!
--kingpunk
along with many other distros too, such as my favorite one: gentoo and a few others like Fedora Core, Suse/Novell, and Mandrake.
just trying to clarify things.
when most poeple think of what a "hacker" is, its usually a malicous cracker.
same concept, yet people like yourself, argue all day, that "hackers" are good.
it helps to get your dictionary prefrence straight.
also, i used to use the exact same device, to cache the keys typed on my keyboard
to see what my family was often doing on my computer, or whatnot
but the whole issue is, it only captures what you type,
and not what you recieve also.
so it isn't really a "wire-tap" if you will.
how much fun could it be, listening to a guy, talk on his own phone,
with nobody else on the other line?
sounds to me like it would be more fun on a higher level, when you work your way up to the current president.
atleast then, we'd all have gratification.;)
yeah. there is no point in buying the songs...
if you cant have the cd too. go by the cd and rip it drm-free then.
but the whole issue with me and iTunes is that,
i only run linux. i don't want to have to pay for wine. im broke as it is..
so i gotta pay people, to make software, for a free os,
to use a free application on, to buy a 0.99$ song..
personally, i miss the days of vynl.
i just think that too many people are attempting to dip their
hands into my already not deep enough pockets,
and then they get to tell me, how i can or can not use my property?
screw that. what happened to the swapmeats, where you and your friends
brought all your cds to school/work/church/eacothers houses
and would trade cds?..but that isn't "legal" now is it?
to think, we live in a free world. free, as in,
overly ruled, corporation controlled, money hungry pollitician-free.. of course.
wow. heh. im glad to see somebody is so optimistic,
about the growth of Linux adoption by small companies, and banks and everything else
it makes it an easier pill to swallow, to see something, community driven,
powering my bank, as opposed to somebody who is driven by greed
and potential wealth, as opposed to security and integrity
i could only hope, that this projection is atleast 1/2 correct and makes a hefty ~20%
jump in market share. whew. it'd make my day.
and do note, it isn't just "Linux" that is going to be doing this!
Open Source alone, is trending upwards. makes my year. for sure.
i guess that means ms will be filing more patents, in attempt to stiffle buisness. ..fun stuff
thanks for the story. good reading. good news!
--kingpunk
no. but you could just wget/fetch them from the ftp servers.
they include a mirror list, with the livecd's.
or you could just boot into knoppix, and do your must dos, like fdisk, etc.. and then format, mount, extract stages, configure, reboot ...and then build for the rest of the week;)
its about that time, that major public media, and whatnot
sees opensource not only as a venu for serious competition with big buisness,
but also, as an option for freedom. i have a right to use peer to peer,
to not copy or distribute copyrighted materials,
but make it a plethora of open source, open media,
where everybody has access to everything. relatively restriction free,
and under the protection of the corporate interest laws.
many of which are out to get the common folk and make another buck or two for the "big buisness."
