  1. Excuse me, I like my PS3! on $499 PlayStation 3 Confirmed · · Score: 1

I haven't posted here in a while - but this thread caught my eye and pissed me off!

Everybody is making these broad generalizations about cost, value, and quality. I thought it might be worth posting what my experience has been.

Keep in mind this is *my* experience and may be useful to people similar to me!

I bought a PS3 within a couple weeks of release (got lucky and found one in Best Buy) - I live in NYC and I have the money to afford it. I have only bought one game since then, "Resistance: Fall of Man", and I agree that so far the game list is weak.

However, I own approximately a dozen Blu-ray movies and watching these has been worth the cost of the system. Beautiful picture and sound - makes having a 1080P TV worthwhile. Since the 1.80 firmware it also has surpassed my upscaling DVD player as the best way for me to watch standard DVDs as well.

Beyond this - the media server functionality works well and I am trying out various 3rd party products to increase the video codec support. I also went out an bought a couple SA-CDs since they have thrown in that capability as well.

I am not a "sony fan-boy" but the quality of audio and video that the PS3 brings into my apartment is unlike anything I have had before. I don't regret buying it at all - I can't wait until the games get better over time (remember PS2 launch... similar launch title weakness)

  5. economics on Gamespot Goes to Subscription Model · · Score: 2

It has been shown over and over again that most sites can not survive on purely advertising revenue alone. It just doesn't work.

So I would assume that Gamespot has been losing money and they decide that they need a way to remedy this. They create a very fair model that does not take away all features from non-pay users and is basically just asking the high end users to pay a nominal amount (compared to the costs of games and magazines).

Of course people here think it is outrageous but they aren't telling you to pay. If you don't use gamespot much, like me, don't pay... and you still will get something useful from them. If you use it a lot you can still decide to not pay but I would be interested to see your comments when the slashdot story reads:

"Gamespot closes down due to lack of subscription revenues"

  6. How "social" is Everquest? on Suing Sony for Everquest Related Suicide? · · Score: 2

I mean... I spend a lot of time on IRC...

And from reading the posts thus far, the people on IRC are trying to do a lot of what some people on Everquest are doing. Finding a place where they fit in, finding a comfortable social situation.

However, I have then pushed that forward and have met a good percentage of my friends from IRC in real life and consider several of them good friends... It seems that this is the outcome which would actually show the community being helpful to the social outcast...

Does this happen much among Everquest players?

If you want to make an opinion of the film before seeing it (which is kind of dumb) then at least do something like watch the trailers... which in my opinion are quite good!

  8. I sold my gamecube to buy a PS2 on Probing the Guts Of the Consoles · · Score: 2

I just thought I would put in my 2 cents on this...

I bought a gamecube at launch cause I am a longtime nintendo supporter and wanted to try it out. I bought Rogue Leader, Tony Hawk 3, and Super Smash Brother Melee. Rogue Leader is a great game, but the PS2 version of tony hawk 3 gets better reviews across the board and the gamecube port has some serious issues (slowdown on certain levels)....

Super Smash Brothers is good as well but not something I would play a lot by myself... so when I sat back and looked at the situation I realized there were a good dozen games I want to play on PS2 but just not that much out for gamecube yet. I realize this was the problem with PS2 at launch as well but in my impatience I have switched over to PS2. I may buy a gamecube later down the line but not just yet.

In other words, I don't really think for a lot of us the features and graphical abilities are the most important thing... its purely who has the best games at the moment.

  9. incorrect assumptions by poster? on Digital Cameras Go Disposable · · Score: 2

uh... I don't see how somebody could subvert the costs.

    I would assume:

1.) you put down a credit card when you borrow the camera so if you break it you pay for it.

2.) that you have to pay a flat rate for printing some minimum number of pictures, so even if you downloaded them yourself you would still be paying...

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me, for people who like the idea of a digital camera but would never buy one... or only need one for a specific event...

I have the latter and its pretty cool... You can totally customize multiple remote control layouts. I personally like 4 quadrants of the screen: volume up, volume down, channel up, channel down. BIG buttons you can hit with your finger or stylus without really looking :)

I know that here at CMU there are at least two classes which give out a computer for the semester...

One of these is a Multimedia Information Processing class where every student is given a laptop which they use during class and for their projects. The class is taught in a room with power and ethernet at every seat and it is therefore not a logistical nightmare. The laptops are returned at the end of the semester and given to the next class...

Other classes have started to utilize our wireless network by giving out Jornada's for the semester... again, its something that is easy (preconfigured wireless settings usually) and is returned at the end of the semester...

It seems to me that these more "need-based" programs make a lot more sense than just giving EVERYBODY a laptop.
