Have you ever been inside an OR during surgery or seen a sponge? I spent two months watching my boss perform open heart surgery. Let me tell you, there is a great deal of blood. The sponges are inside the thoracic cavity during the procedures, and there is so much blood that they almost appear to be part of the tissue. The ones I saw also weren't that big, and they look nothing like the sponges we use in the shower. Certainly this type of incident should not happen, and the OR staff works hard to keep track of equipment; however, don't trivialize how difficult that can be under the conditions of a surgical procedure. It is a mess in there.
If I may paraphrase Dennis Miller from his pre-conservative-ideologue days on this subject:
Suppression of speech produces people like Hitler; free speech produces people like David Duke.
Not allowing speech that is hateful just drives it underground where such ideology can fester. I would much prefer to let people blow off their steam in freely and in a controlled manner where everyone can see who they are. I have never understood this presumed right to not be offended. I know that hearing hearing a racial slur can be quite painful (having endured a couple in the last few years) but do these people really think they are going to stop racism by banning some expression of that racism. All it will do is lull the target race into thinking everything is okay when in reality the hate is still there, just hidden. This is a bad idea, it is.
Well, let me tell you; I am over here in Philly, and I decided to ask it for escorts. The first two results were "Stacey Lacey" and "Ebony and Ivory." I started laughing loudly after that and it misinterpreted that as me wanting to "go back." I suppose that answers the question.
One would hope an international criminal mastermind could do better than the encryption built into Vista.
Really? Personally, I would hope they write their plans on slips of paper and stash them in a shoe box. I really do not wish any success for criminal masterminds...except maybe Dr. Claw. I really thought Inspector Gadget was obnoxious.
Now wait a minute. It does not sound like you are trying very hard. Since you are waiting for the rock to make a move, you can go eat, drink, urinate, take a dump, sleep, have intimate relations, or anything else as long as you trust the rock not to cheat. If you wait it out long enough, the sun will eventually explode, and your rock will probably melt. Then you can claim victory and be the best. We all have goals, and the only way to achieve them is to persevere in the face of adversity.
I don't think the slaves for whom the 13th amendment was written actually entered into any contracts. They were either born into the situation or snatched from their homes in Africa.
Remember though, this is the UK, so it would read more like:
Dear Mr. Pinchley,
Her Majesty's grocery purchase monitoring system recently detected an increase in the purchase of puddings, particularly spotted dick, which correlates with a decrease in your volume of vegetable purchases. This pattern is a deviation from Her Majesty's approved Nutritional Excellence(tm) list. As such, we will be doubling your insurance premiums. Also, it is time to get the oil changed in your lorry. Good day!
That's why the politicians were so up in arms over GTA 3 and hot coffee; they were personally insulted at the treatment prostitutes in the games. They saw it as a personal affront to their chosen occupation!
I remember reading article by an MD researcher where he talked about all of the BS in the research world whether it be scientific and humanities. Basically, he made the point that when you get an MD and learn to research or when you get a PhD, part of what you learn is how to sift through the BS. He went on to say that many times, he will read a paper and know that the study is BS or that the power is too low to make any conclusions, but the points the paper makes may hold water and are worth exploring further. Being that I have worked in medical research, I can attest to situations in which a study was BS, but the ideas of the study were good and ended up being implemented in future research.
The NYT went to them saying they were going to print it. At that point, the administration decided to go ahead and comment in order to begin damage control rather than to wait like they did for NSA surveillance. I suppose they figure if they attack right out of the gate, they can make this seem like they are in the right much more easily.
Also notice that "family values" proponents frequently harken back to those past times when things were oh, so better. Seldom does anyone point out that black people and women couldn't vote and black people were treated as a subclass as a matter of policy. The "good old days" is such a load of crap because they were not as good as everyone remembers. Coincidentally, some of the "family values" proponents also seem to be the same folks that want to get rid of New Deal safety nets and roll back some of the equality protections we have taken for granted. Just a coincidence I suppose.
I don't think all teachers make that. My friend teaches 2nd grade and makes $24,000 AND she has to buy many of her own school supplies. Also, though she only works nine months a year, she has to arrive at school between 6 and 7 and spends the evenings doing lesson plans and grading. The principle there treats the teachers like shit because he is on a power trip. Where are these teachers that make $70,000 plus?
I will be the first one to admit the public school system in many areas is completely broken and useless. I am a product of public school, and I had my fair share of teachers who, for whatever reason, were bullies or simply burnt out and ready for retirement. However, don't attack the teachers as a whole for the actions of a few. I knew many teacher who took their job seriously and actally worked to teach kids to think independantly. In my experience it is administrators at all levels that are mostly to blame. All the teachers who taught independant thinking were driven out by authoritarian figures on their respective power trips. I hear stories of pressure placed on teachers to pass students who aren't doing anything in class in order to receive full funding or even better, of administrators forcing teachers to teach to some standardized test so that the school can get more funding. This problem is very much not about teachers. It is about the people in positions of real power.
"Hello, ummm, my name is, um, Gil Baites. I would like to submit 45,000 flaws that I suspect will be reported quite soon by Microsoft. However, I do not have any certain knowledge of this event, as I have no connection to the company. Now if you'll excuse me, I must go back to my mansion and to my wife Gelinda. Thank you."
It was a good idea, though. Also, wasn't that the first hint at the Borg, what with the mysteriously destroyed colonies in the neutral zone? Or was that something that has been retroactively made part of the Borg saga?
Let's not forget self-employment tax. That will kill you come tax season. You have to pay the portion of social security that your employer would have paid if you were actually employed at the company. It is killer.
Not to be a stickler, but wasn't it only one booby? Plus, can we really say we saw a booby when it had a pasty (sp?) on it? With the nipple obscured, it is just a bunch of flesh, fatty tissue, vasculature, mammary ducts, etc. that moves independantly from the chest wall.
I don't know much about this show and have never seen it, but I think it would be funny if this whole reality show turned out to be fake. That way, at the end of the whole thing, after the viewers have laughed and gasped at these people's 'stupidity' and at all the crazy and tragic things that have happened, the actors and producers can stop and announce, "This whole thing is fake" and laugh at the viewers. I don't know enough about the show, but it certainly would not surprise me to hear that something like this was all staged, with actors playing stupid.
I think you are both right. This reminds me of something my grandfather used to say about driving. "The graveyard is full of people who have the right of way". Every driver is certainly responsible for his/her action on the road and for following the rules. However, if you as a driver assume that the other drivers are going to follow the rules and respect your right of way, someone's going to run a red light and kill you. It's called defensive driving
The same goes in speech. You are responsible for what you say. Your yell "Bomb" in an airport example creates a clear and present danger, and represents a situation in which the listeners do not have time to evaluate the veracity of the statement.
In a case like this, where there is no imminent danger, the audience does have a responsibility to think critically about the statement. It does not absolve the speaker/writer from his responsibility for what he says, but as someone a few posts up said, there are always going to be Charlatans and others saying false things who don't care about their own responsibilities. The listener must, therefore, think before just accepting what he/she hears as fact. If you want an example of what happens when listeners don't think critically, just look at American politics. There are groups of people who will believe whatever a Republican or Democrat say because they support one party over the other. There is a group of people who believe Al Gore said he "invented the internet" and that John Kerry was dishonest about his service in Vietnam. John McCain supposedly has an illegitimate, black daughter. The speaker/writer most definitely has responsibilities, but the listener cannot assume the speaker/writer is being responsible and therefore has the responsibility to think critically. Unfortunately, many abdicate that responsibility, as well.
I am writing in regards to your inquiry about compensation for your recent affliction of horrible cancers. I am afraid we must reject any request for compensation. If you will refer back to the release you signed before submitting to our experiments, you will find that you stated that you understood all the risks and possible side effects of the injection and would not hold Johns Hopkins responsible for any adverse effects. In summary, I am sorry about your sickness; and I hope you can see that while this injection will eventually bring about your untimely death, you were able to dispense some mouse justice prior to your illness.

I think a good case of explosive diarrhea spreading through the virtual world would be quite amusing.

OK, I'll admit it. I paid for the survey. It's a long story...
I think they flag and hold bags associated with passengers who do not board the flight.
