When you double "zero effort", you still get zero, sadly. What I don't understand is why broadband modems (DSL / Cable / Sat) don't come with a user-configureable firewall built into it. (PATENT PENDING, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED) The first time you try to go somewhere with your browser, it opens this page and you configure it or press a "Standard Configuration" button depending on your level of expertise and BAM! Protected all the way. Well, most of it.
You're only legally obligated to give the correct number to the IRS, Department of Social Security and your employer so that they can accurately report your wages. You *DO NOT* have to give any information to these debt collection agencies. None. Zero. Zilch.
And that, my friend, is *EXACTLY* what THE MAN wants you to believe. Unfortunately, the world really isn't so binary. There are more than two states of existance.
Among the bellowing "I can't believe this made it to the front page" trumpeters, I'd like to issue the clarion call of a "Congrats!".
Fatherhood is something to be proud of!
I was with you until this part:
"drop their connection via MAC address and refuse to give them another DHCP lease".
Here's a better idea. CALL THEM! If they're running Windows, send them a Messenger Service Message before you cut their connection, telling them to call IT or something. Don't just shut them off, it's bad for your department's image and it's a bad policy when dealing with people.
This seems to be an interesting and convenient solution to a couple technologically solvable problems that I've been having!
Care to explain (in verbose, wonderful, linux-n00b-style detail) how you did it?
In New York state, you are legally mandated to have "one day of rest", defined as 24 consecutive hours, where you are not required to do any work-type activities. Find out if their are any similar laws in your state.
The government isn't saying "You have to do X with your product." They're saying that "Yes, you signed some sort of binding agreement. Now you have to follow through with it or we'll find you in contempt of court and consider the contract broken by you."
Not while preventing undue harm to them, you can't. That's part of the duty of the five-oh when they try to arrest someone. They can't greivously injure someone trying to arrest them unless they're in danger.
Have you ever tried to remove someone from a tree? As the older brother of five avid tree-climbers, let me assure you that it is QUITE difficult. Especially when they don't want to co-operate with the removal.
How about copying it to an appropriately big tape and THEN sending that tape to a DVD mastering place? Don't they have the capability to easily span multiple DVD's, along with the automation to do something like this on a semi-frequent basis cheaply? That way, you've got two copies, one that can be re-written nightly and one that is truly archival in quality (20+ years). Any suggestions?
Imagine a beo .... son of a bitch. They beat me to it.

The concept of having a "good" and a "not-quite-as-good" shotgun scares me. Who needs more than one at a time?

Today I use an Athlon XP 2400, 80GB HD, 512K RAM.
Even after 10 years, 640K is *STILL* enough for anybody!

answers.google.com has EVERYTHING you need. Evar.
Probably not, the editors would just post more duplicates.
The question isn't whether or not it's legal, but rather, can you prove it?
Unless, of course, they are the Intelligence Gatherers Of The U.S...
Have you ever tried aiming the remote at the television set?
:)
I believe Ricardo Montalban said it best. I paraphrase. "TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACO!"
"I love having windows"
BLASPHEMER
"Raygun (sandanista - I do not remember)"
The man *DOES* have Alzheimer's, cut him some slack. ;)
Tyranny happens in small steps, my friend. Small steps.

There is a legal difference.

Or aren't supposed to, anyways.

That's funny. My current fortune on slashdot is as follows:
"The UNIX philosophy basically involves giving you enough rope to hang yourself. And then a couple of feet more, just to be sure."
I stand corrected! Apparently what is common sense to me is not common sense to the U.S. Government. ;)
