  8. Declaring A Major... on High School Students Forced To Declare A Major · · Score: 1

The A Major triad is a chord made up of the notes A, C#, and E. It is the Tonic Major of A Minor, and the Dominant of F# Minor.
The triad can be played in one of three different voicings; Root position (A-C#-E), 1st Inversion (C#-E-A), or 2nd Inversion (E-A-C#). When played in the 'home' key of A Major, the root note (that is, the A) should always be doubled when voicing the chord in four-part harmony. If the chord is being played as the dominant of its key, then the bass note should be doubled when playing in an inverted position.

Common variants on the A Major chord include A Maj7 - where a G# is introduced into the voicing, replacing the 5th note (E); A Sus2, where a B is substituted for the C# (to be used only in higher voicings), and A6, where the 6th note of the scale (F#) is substituted for the 5th. Guitarists are familiar with the "A5" chord, where only the root and 5th notes of the chord are played. This chord (a "power chord") can be played in place of either an A Major or A Minor chord.

Prime Minister John Howard says people will not be prevented from using their mobile phones during this September's APEC summit in Sydney. While revealing plans to close three city-circle train stations, Mr Howard was asked to respond to reports that mobile calls would be blocked while US President George W Bush's motorcade drives through the CBD. The move was reportedly designed to prevent terrorists from using mobile signals to detonate bombs.
But Mr Howard says standard phone coverage will be available during the visit. "People are not prevented from using their mobile phones," he said. "I'm not going to get into the specifics of security matters. I think any suggestion that normal communication won't continue to apply would not be appropriate."

  16. Temperature? what the hell? on NASA Will Go Metric On the Moon · · Score: 1
Similarly, temperatures are more useful for most people in imperial. For example, when looking at the weather, a really cold, freezing day is in the -20s, down in Florida, we don't get cold, but we get hot days in the upper 90s (areas of Texas get low triple digits, and heat waves can hit the 120s), this gives us a range of temperatures of 140 degrees. The same Celsius range is -30 C - 50 C, a useful range of 80, so for gauging temperatures, the Imperial system is easier for the weather. In addition, if I want to say something is in the low 80s (80 F - 84 F), I get 27 C - 29 C, so upper 20s does the same thing, but something like upper 80s or lower 90s collides in the metric system in the low 30s.

What the hell? I have no idea what you're trying to convey there. I never want to say something's "in the low 80s" because I don't use the Fahrenheit scale of temperature measurement. I can just say that it's about 40 or 41 degrees outside (because that's what it is) and be done with it. You're only saying it's "more useful for most people" because you've grown up with it and have known nothing else your whole life. I'm pretty good at 'eyeballing' the temperature to within two degrees during summer, and five or so degrees during winter (because the human body responds to temperature differences logarithmically), but I'd never be able to tell you what the temperature is in fahrenheit.
Because I've never needed to, and hopefully, never will.

I guess what it all boils down to is I just really can't see the point of the billion-and-one different FOSS licenses out there. Even more so when you consider that you can seemingly change from one to another on a whim, or even distribute the same thing under different licenses for different platforms. As other posts have revealed in this discussion you can even (seemingly, I only skim-read it) arbitrarily change the conditions of somebody else's licensing terms... why bother?

How about just a mass free-for-all with these conditions:
    1) All FOS produce is to remain credited to its author/s
    2) All FOS produce is to remain FOS
    3) All FOS produce shall be able to be intermingled with other FOS and non-FOS produce without legal issue.

Watches can also look good. In fact, I've taken to only buying interesting designs that stand out, and get people asking about them, such as this little baby by EleeNo.
My phone and my iPod don't look anywhere near as good as that watch.
