as a developer on sql2005, i found very little use for it. the xml parsing and displaying functionality will remain in 2008, only the native xml webservices are being pulled.
it made no sense anyway, it had nothing of the richness that asp.net web services offer and made most administrators nervous about its security (and rightly so!)
why anyone in their right minds would have used it...i don't know!
When I read Comp.Sci and Math many years back, my university offered two distinct courses: Information Science which was offered by the Economics Faculty - geared heavily towards the use of Computers in Business. Computer Science hosted by the Science Faculty - focusing on the academic aspects of Computing.
For us, the choice was made quite clear - If you are more interested in building a base for a normal career working with computers, go with Information Science. If you are more interested in going into research, or doing 'low-level' work in high-tech firms, go with Computer Science.
i really think there is great potential for good works here.
a good friend who is a midwife, is going to work in rural portugual next year, and will be involved in opening a community-based birth-house. (sorry, i don't know what a geburtshaus is in english)
but some of the equipment that they need, such as a CTG machine, cost upward of euro2500!
i've seen this machine, and it's nothing special. but it has lots of dedicated equipment that could easily be replaced by generic computer equipment.
this also got me wondering about creating some sort of open DIY medical equipment repository.
seeing this article, i can well believe that a lot of people could benefit from such openly available research!

It is easy to use, fully user-controlled and all users subscribed to your feed really are interested in what you have say/sell. Otherwise, they would not be subscribed.
It really is the best of all worlds - Marketing is gauranteed an interested audience. Users have an opt-in system. Admins don't have to worry about mail deluges, inboxs filling up, etc.
Anyone who advocating an Opt-Out Email 'Marketing Vehicle' has no interest in a 'best-for-all' solution, but rather 'best-for-me'.
I believe US law treats companies as legal personae, granting them similiar rights to people.
Should a person break the law, they may well face a jail term.
For a company, a jail sentence make sense. Who should be incarcerated? The executives?
Perhaps we need to take a different approach - one which with credible and appropriate consequences.
I suggest removing all copyrights on songs/artists that benefited from the payola crime.
The starving artists themselves can claim damages against the company directly.
This won't be the first time that licensing has faced such a crises.
In the early days of the web, I worked on a web-based project which connected to a MS SQL-Server database. The licensing issue was very confusing since the information in the database would be made available to anyone who came to site (and we expected a few hundred regular users), but technically everything would be accessed by through only one account (the webserver!).
I called the local MS office and they confirmed that we only need one licence for this model.
Based on this information, we rewrote a major internal application to be entirely browser based - and then dropped all our seat licences bar one.
Needless to say, MS had a absolute fit!
About a year later we received an incredibly confusing document outlining license-requirements for internet and intranet applications.

Here in Europe, as I believe it is in the US too, Companies are given rights akin to people. They want to be treated like people. They create brands which reflect their 'personalities'.
So, were I to say that people are only there to make money, and need no 'moral or social values', would you agree?
Would it be alright if I used slave labour?
Would it be alright if I killed for a more take-home every month? Lie and cheat? Bully my neighbours to score me a better deal?
Were I such a person, I would be lynched real quick!

QT *does* have a win32 "non-commercial" distribution of the QT3 API - unfortuantly, it is only available with the book 'C++ GUI Programming with Qt3' by J Blanchette and M Summerfield.
i've taken a number of qt-based linux apps off kde-apps.org and recompiled on windows - as long as the developers stick to the Qt API, its a breeze to port!
there is a "non-commercial" version available for the win32 platform.
it has no (direct) cost and distributed apps are royalty free.
i dont think that it is available for download, but it is included in with the book "c++ gui programming with qt3"
