The question remains, why did Microsoft choose to do it that way rather than any of the other MORE PREFERABLE TO THE END USER ways that have been mentioned.
User: It doesn't install just because I don't have compatible hardware? This is madness! Microsoft: Madness?... This... is... MICROSOFT!! *Throws user into sinkhole of support*
Because we all know that the most effective way to be informed is by only talking with and listening to people you already agree with./sarcasm
And yet you're here on Slashdot?
*AHEM* hello, vim vs emacs? Just because many people here don't agree with Microsoft and hate Bush and the RIAA, doesn't mean everybody here has the same viewpoint on everything - including Microsoft, Bush and the RIAA.
Slashdot is precisely good because people often present opposing points of view in an insightful way. Debating is one step towards understanding.
He won't take your money, he just wants your life Collecting on your bounty just for being alive Shock you with his sockets, empty out your pockets, The police look for a clue but all they will find is you -
He uses the night to sneak past your sight Ninjas and pirates, they've got nothing on this guy He's sneaky and quiet, so keep your house lit Careful where you step, careful where you sit, 'cuz
(chorus) He's a Tin-Can Hitman, try to catch him if you can Secret robo-agent with a secret robo-plan; Don't you dare get in his way, Or he'll take you out with his death-ray!
Tin-Can Hitman, try to catch him if you can Secret robo-agent with a secret robo-plan; Keep your windows shut, lock your doors air-tight, 'Cuz Tin-Can Hitman's comin' for you tonight!
Ask him if he's heard of my friend Robot Joe, He won't tell you anything 'cuz nobody knows Look over your shoulder, keep a watchful eye, He will blame it on you while your friend lays there to die
Everyone will tell you that he's out of control He won't stop till everyone's a robot doin' what they're told Someone stop him before he seals our fate, But God, oh no, it's too late, here comes:
(chorus) The Tin-Can Hitman, try to catch him if you can Secret robo-agent with a secret robo-plan; Don't you dare get in his way, Or he'll take you out with his death-ray!
Tin-Can Hitman, try to catch him if you can Secret robo-agent with a secret robo-plan; Keep your windows shut, lock your doors air-tight, 'Cuz Tin-Can Hitman's comin' for you tonight!
The following algorithm is a major advance in Math Research and was discovered by David H. Bailey, Chief Technologist, NERSC at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
The algorithm for computing individual hex digits of pi is based on this formula:
pi = sigma(for k = 0 to infinity) { 1/16^k * [ (4/(8k+1) - 2/(8k+4) - 1/(8k+5) - 1/(8k+6) ] }
So, let's see. The RIAA is certainly guilty of the new 4, 5, and 6
Nothing new here... just because these sins were just recently listed didn't mean that the riaa execs weren't going to hell anyway: They were accusing innocents of "stealing" their "property" (that's perjury), engaging in monopolistic practices and asking too much of punitive damages (which would go against "thou shalt not steal"), etc. They were evil, and they know it.
Q: Why don't game developers publish more games for Linux? A: Linux doesn't have enough market share to justify the effort of cross-platform programming. (Translation: There aren't more Linux users) Q: Why aren't more Linux users? A: There aren't enough games for Linux. All the good games require windows.:-/
In other words, there's no real incentive ($$$) for game publishers to make Linux or cross-platform games.
Once I e-mailed a company why didn't they make a Linux version of their game, and they very politely sent me down a pipe. Since then, I haven't spent a single cent in games. I say screw them, and I don't care how much money they lose to piracy.
And, a surprising amount of the time after an update My Firefox and Thunderbird clients have to tell me that they're no longer the default applications and do I want to re-enable them.
For some reason, I find that rather annoying. It was my setting yesterday, just because you patched a vulnerability on Outlook, why have you made it the default application?
I fear I'm going to be modded down for this, but this is a sincere request and not a fanboy blurb - unfortunately there's no means to do private messaging here on slashdot, so I have to ask this publicly. Have you actually *considered* moving to Linux? Perhaps you're in the privileged position where you don't actually *need* Windows software, and switching would benefit you since you wouldn't need to bother with Windows annoyances anymore.
If you're willing to discuss this a little further, don't hesitate in dropping me a mail:)
And they are bringing IE8 into compliance because...?
because they lost the bet. Microsoft expected the force of millions of dollars in propaganda to succeed against those annoying amateurs. But guess what, the amateurs are winning. The book of Mozilla explains it much more elegantly.
Mammon slept. And the beast reborn spread over the earth and its numbers grew legion. And they proclaimed the times and sacrificed crops unto the fire, with the cunning of foxes. And they built a new world in their own image as promised by the sacred words, and spoke of the beast with their children. Mammon awoke, and lo! it was naught but a follower. from The Book of Mozilla, 11:9 (10th Edition)
Between space invaders and today's 3d there has been the time where blood could be drawn but mostly wasn't.
Interesting that you mentioned space invaders. From wikipedia:
In October 2005, Nishikado commented in an interview with English based video games magazine Edge that the look of the aliens had been based on the description of the alien invaders in H. G. Wells' classic science fiction story, The War of the Worlds: "In the story, the alien looked like an octopus. I drew a bitmap image based on the idea. Then I created several other aliens that look like sea creatures such as squid or crab." Nishikado also noted that his original intention in designing a shooting game had been to make the enemies airplanes, but that this had been too technically difficult to render. He was opposed to depicting the enemies as human beings (which would have been technically easier) as he believed the idea of depicting the shooting of humans to be morally wrong.
I wonder why he wanted the enemies to be airplanes... sentiments regarding WWII and the nuke, perhaps?
I thought the money was in advertising, not in the network.
I don't know much about advertising - i just know that I prefer MSN's animated emoticons that you can show off to your friends.
IE is a de-facto standard, and THAT's the problem.

Acid3 Test Released
·
· Score: 1
Of course the Microsoft software will fail these tests as that is what ACID tests are designed for...
After thinking for a while, I had realized a really awful thought that has creeped into developers' minds. They ALWAYS design for two or more browsers!
Of course IE fails, it doesn't implement the standard event handling methods in javascript. They don't care about "how things should be done", they only release THEIR specs on their webpage and say "we do things this way", and this is why we end up writing if's or adding a compatibility layer in our javascripts.
We have grown so accustomed to this problem that we take it for granted and thing "oh, that's just how things are". Hello!? there shouldn't be any if's in any webpage code... This is why standards were created in the first place!
... yet. See, this is why IE fails. IE developers have refused to conform to under-construction standards, but when the standards are finally released (most of the times unchanged from the working drafts), oh too late! We already released the browser! Maybe the next version, too bad.
But we have to give credit to the IE8 team, I'm sure they're already beginning to work out the failures on CSS3. I just hope they're aiming for full standards compatibility and not just "standards covered in acid3".
So what browser do the Acid Test people use to check their tests?
That's a very good question. Any instrumentation needs to be calibrated with an even more precise instrumentation. So, what browser did they use? Or did they test things in various browsers, asumming that they would work correctly combined?
The question remains, why did Microsoft choose to do it that way rather than any of the other MORE PREFERABLE TO THE END USER ways that have been mentioned.

Microsoft: Madness?
This...
is...
MICROSOFT!! *Throws user into sinkhole of support*
One hint: Starts with "M", and ends with "icrosoft" :P
Joke aside, I wrote in my journal the reasons I kept Linux. All my Windows headaches are gone since I switched.

I'd give parent a +1 funny, but I already had posted something.

At this rate, it's only a matter of time before Open Source achieves sentience and turns on its creators.
Knowing the slashdot crowd, it'll take more than a few curves to do that. Oh, wait...
I too was expecting a LOtR experience, was was very much disappointed by what I found.
When will you learn not to dig too deep?
Actually at least six of these new seven deadly sins apply to the RIAA, starting with "polluting the environment".
:P
A little off topic, but why am I suddenly reminded of all those AOL CD's?
So, let's see. The RIAA is certainly guilty of the new 4, 5, and 6

...on lighting than on backlighting, monitor tans notwithstanding.
Hey, tongue-twisters are forbidden here!
It's probably more like "with their pants down" AND "in the cookie jar." Then it makes sense.
Son, I think it's time we talk, man to man.
Well... it is possible.
Nay, it was the flying spaghetti monster and his noodly appendages!
The indentation limit's been reached! My reading space is going to collapse! Claustrophobic!!! X-(
