I think the point is the duration of the activity. When you get drunk it usually lasts for a few hours, and when you're on your cell phone you are impaired for as long as the conversation lasts. Glancing down at your stereo for half a second to turn up the volume or skip a track isn't nearly as dangerous as talking on the phone for 40 minutes while zipping around in heavy traffic. To the same extent doing stupid shit like putting makeup on while driving or combing your hair, shaving, etc is idiotic because instead of looking at the road the person is looking in the mirror for however long it takes them do whatever it is they're doing. Even talking to a passenger in your car can be dangerous if you're one of those idiots who has to look at the person you're talking to even though you're driving at 50 mph in rush hour traffic.

  5. Re:Sure... .but on Cell Users As Bad As Drunk Drivers · · Score: 1

Except that a large number of people do not have their eyes on the road while conversing with a passenger. I've never understood the need for people to look at the person they're talking to WHILE DRIVING A FUCKING CAR!

Driving is a priviledge in the US and everyone takes it for granted by doing some of the stupidest shit in the world from behind the wheel of a car. I personally believe this is because driving tests are a joke and any moron who can scratch their ass and pick their nose can get a license to drive vehicles that kill more people every year than guns.

I think maybe it is time to start making the process to obtain a license more rigorous. Hell, in Texas you don't even have to take a behind-the-wheel driving test with an instructor in the car. All you have to do is pass a written test and practice so many hours with an adult or driving school. I think maybe people should have to pass a written test and behind-the-wheel test to obtain a license, and probably every 5 or 6 years for renewal too.

I read an article and heard on the radio this morning about a woman who answered her cell phone in a movie theater and began to have a conversation. Another woman in the theater reached over and tapped the shoulder of the woman on the phone and asked her to be quiet or go outside. When this happened, the woman on the phone called police and accused the woman who tapped her of assault. Now the woman and the courts have to waste time dealing with this. I believe this happened in Brownsville, Texas.

I honestly cannot believe the number of times I have seen people answer their phone during a movie and attempt to carry on a conversation in a packed theater. The balls/arrogance of these people just amazes me. I personally believe that all movie theaters should automatically block all cell phone reception as soon as the previews begin to roll, or send a self destruct sequence to any phone with an audible ring during the movie. If you can't handle not being able to use your cell phone for 2 hours, then wait till the movie comes out on DVD. With all the selfish assholes on cell phones, irresponsible parents bringing crying infants into rated R movies and allowing toddlers to roam freely throughout the theater it is no wonder why I stopped going to the movies.

On a somewhat related note, I've noticed that restaurants are starting to have designated cell phone areas. This is a relatively new practice, at least in Houston. I hope more businesses start adopting these policies. Now if we could just get designated family/children areas (a la Simpsons) I would be in heaven.

  25. Contradictions? on Danish, Western Websites Under Attack · · Score: 1

The cartoons were originally published in Egypt back in October or something. Did we have riots and protests with Molotov cocktails and petrol bombs? No. The most hypocritical aspect of this entire situation: thousands of Muslims are rioting, fighting police, burning down buildings, and declaring that those who insult their prophet must be executed all because drawing his picture violates Muslim law. My interpretation, after taking a few classes comparing Judaism, Islam, and Christianity back in college, is that violence is also a violation of Muslim law. Suicide bombing is against Muslim law. I'm also pretty sure that burning down the embassy of a relatively friendly nation because someone at a newspaper in that nation printed a picture you don't like is also against Muslim law.

Next we have word that a paper in Iran is going to have a Holocaust comic competition. They want to know if the world's view of freedom of expression will tolerate parodies of one of the largest tragedies in the history of the European and Jewish communities. While I agree that if we're going to make fun of one community it is only fair to parody them all, I believe that this is a childish way to react. I certainly understand some of the hostility between the communities. After all, I'm sure most of us would be a bit peeved if we were forced out of our homes by a foreign government to make a holy land for a group people you didn't necessarily get along with over the past few centuries. Either way, I believe that Iran's response is only going to fuel the fires of hate between these two communities as well as those between the Muslim community and the rest of the world, which will of course lead to more bloodshed.

It is sad but true facts, that no matter how many benevolent and peaceful people follow Islam, or any other religion, having violent and deadly extremists attaching themselves to that religion only hurts the reputation of the religious community as a whole. Many members of the Muslim community have spoken out against the rioting and condemned the violence and destruction. But is that really going to change anything? How do you reason with someone who believes that they are doing what is right in the eyes of god? Seriously, I don't know....
