  1. Example for the rest of the world on Dutch Academics Declare Research Free-For-All · · Score: 1

Of course people who are going to loose money are going to complain...sounds like Microsoft. However, the world will be better off because of this. It would be amazing if the US, China and Russia would do the same thing. Just think of how many problems could be solved if more agencies did this. Mankind would benefit tremendously.

  2. Like them or not, Goolge has some great offerings on Google Acquires Dodgeball · · Score: 1

When you look at all the services Google has that they offer for free, and some of their paid services, Google really has filled a needed market. Go to one place for everything. It will be interesting to see what effect Google has on YAHOO over the next year. I like Yahoo's main page, but Google simply rocks.

  3. Impressive on Firefox Updated to 1.0.4 · · Score: 5, Interesting

While I don't care for the update process, I am exceedingly impressed that Mozilla makes fixes so quickly, and doesn't try to hide them (like another browser company has done in the past). Professionalism...very nice to see this from Mozilla. Kudos!

Thank you. I really never wanted to upset anyone, and I know this can be a very sensative topic. I'm happy to agree to disagree, and don't fault anyone for thier beliefs one way or another. Good discussion is what makes life interesting.

That is crazy cheap. Maybe I should take back what I said. Then again, I'm looking for an external burner that I can use on my laptop at work and take home too.

  9. Another reason not to buy a DVD burner on 45GB Triple-Layer HD DVDs · · Score: 2, Insightful

As stated previously, when they decide on a standard, let me know. I'd really like to get a burner, and I know that it will probably work well and be compatable for some time. However, I don't want to buy something and then have it become obsolete just after I buy it. Guess I'm just too cheap.

  10. I hope they look at this better than Real ID on Congress to Revisit the Patriot Act · · Score: 5, Insightful

"Only a Government afraid of its citizens tries to control them."

I agree 110% that the Shuttle programs needs to be overhauled, and that it is WAY over-due. However, if I was going up in one of those things, I'd want them to spend as much as humanly necessary to ensure I was going to come back in one piece. I feel that way was a business traveler on airplanes. How much more for an Astronaut.

  12. I don't understand Microsoft on Wine Now Has Big-Time Lawyers On Its Side · · Score: 5, Insightful

Sure...I might not choose to run Windows, but that doesn't mean I won't chosoe to run Office or something else from Microsoft that Wine will enable. I run a Linux Desktop at work but use CrossOver to run Office, and at home I have to use Wine for some of my kids games. I think Microsoft would say "well, we might not get all of their business, but we'll take what we can get." From a business standpoint, that would seem to make more sense. But then again, we're talking about Microsoft.

  13. There is a problem on Johnny Can So Program · · Score: 5, Interesting

I taught a computer class for a large group of home school students and private school kids this year. They were, at the beginning, interested in learning to program. However, when it came down to actually doing it, and learning to code, they all, except for one, said "We're just more interested in playing games." The sad part about this is that some of the parents were just fine with that as long as they did their other work.

  14. I'll buy a few! on Indian Company Shows Off Sub-$200 Laptop · · Score: 1

My grandfather, my mother, and her family overseas could all use them because all they want to be able to do is send email and visit our website to see picutres. They could care less about anything else. I think this is a good thing as long as the quality is there.

IF they do dump M$ and go to Linux / Open Source and Free Software, the students will be better off because they will be able to understand something other than Windows, and they will learn how to do something else besides point, double-click, and reboot.

This excites me because I have seen first-hand what happens when students learn on a Linux desktop, and then take their skills elsewhere. It is a very good thing indeed.

  20. That is what happens when you get lazy! on Microsoft 'under attack' On All Fronts · · Score: 1

Microsoft come to accept that everyone would be happy to tollerate sub-standard products. Blue screens, resource intensive products that lock up more often than not, viruses, security holes, etc. When you are asleep at the wheel you're going to get passed. The fact is that Microsoft isn't going to be the reigning king forever. I fully expect Open Source / Linux to eventually take a majority of the marketshare. Firefox and Thunderbird will go a long way toward introducing others to Open Source, and the benefits of it.
