"f I look at digg, the percentage of idiotic, flamebait and stupid-but-common-misconception posts that are modded up and of witty, insightful and thought-provoking posts that are modded down is disheartening."
But at least this entire thread that has nothing to do with the article would be modded down.
Search engine indexes from Google, Yahoo et al are neutral as to the legitimacy of a work. Do an image search for a celebrity and try to find what percentage of images come from the copyright owner or someone lawfully allowed to distribute those particular works.
The only difference is Google and Yahoo are opt-out indexers while torrent sites are opt-in.
"'They're building a new medium on the backs of our industry, without paying for any of the content,' Ali Rahnema, managing director of the association, told Reuters in an interview. 'The news aggregators are taking headlines, photos, sometimes the first three lines of an article -- it's for the courts to decide whether that's a copyright violation or not.'"
Except for the occasional unique content like interviews, doesnt this describe Slashdot? Along with Fark, Digg and countless blogs whose entire sites who report what others are reporting, except they use people instead of Google's crawlers.
I would say that anything less than the above (plus a rocking scroll wheel) is not what I would consider a complete mouse. I don't even play FPSs. I just take my web browsing very seriously.
"Well in Galaxies defense I'm pretty sure they have one of those "gameplay/content may change over time" CYA riders."
And it does, so that's the kicker. Online games may change from month to month. MMORPGs, especially, are rarely the same game two years after their release date. This guy should do what all the other players have done. Vote with his wallet and find another game that can be played with his range of motion.
"I am not saying you shouldn't fight to keep your privacy, but it is not taking away a right, it is taking away a luxury, that we enjoy."
I don't know what country you live in, but in the US it's considered a right defined by the Fourth Amendment to the Constituion: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Of course, the gov't is trying to eliminated the idea of "unreasonable" down in the name of homeland security.
"No, you don't" in my best "don't screw with me, I'm psycho" voice. With that, she looked like she was about to burst into tears, which leads me to believe that they don't get too many people that refuse their request
Heh. This sounds like an excerpt from a really bad piece of fiction. Like Richard Marcinko's Rogue Warrior in Task Force Wal-Mart
"At what point does replacing a ten grand a year employee with a 100 grand machine become impractical?...By simply creating technology to replace workers are we really improving things?"
You'd prefer a step above slave labor to this device?
You mean we won't be able to play the same things we've been playing for 15+ years. They can't clone last year's big-hit? No big budgets?
The irony being that one of the Revolution's major selling points is downloadable versions of classic Nintendo games. Turn the controller sideways and it's perfect for the classic games. The same games that get re-released with EVERY Nintendo system. Do we really need another release of Excitebike?
Congratulations, Nintendo, you have successfully created a new machine with absolutely NO third-party support. I'll be looking forward to seeing you implement the unique features of the controller on yet another version of Mario Party or Warioware.
I'll see your Friends and raise you Barney the Dinosaur and Antiques Roadshow.
PBS is fairly derivative and safe. They don't cancel anything so good shows tend to stay around longer, but continue to use the same formula forever (see every show older than ten years). That can work for a news show, but would never sustain a continuous fictional story, unless you REALLY love Sesame Street. Also, much of it is recycled from other networks (like the BBC), making public TV quite an inbred network.
The only reason PBS works is precisely because they cannot be competitive. They're the only public channel, apart from local cable access channels (which are a mutant breed of their own). There is no way to fill 300+ channels with non-competitive, government sponsored TV. If there were 300 PBS's and BBC's they'd have the same amount of crap as private networks.
And the US shuts down net cafes with just as much gusto as the Chinese.
What? Not even close. Such a huge massive move to shut down small business would be political suicide against the official involved.
But you have to wonder. I mean didn't we just see an article in which hundreds of Slashdot posters defended in public the use of the term "ricer". Clearly there are some real double standards about what is appropriate when it comes to anything Asian.
"Nonononono. That's different. I made fun of them because they are from China. You see, it's not okay to make fun of an American because they're black, brown, or whatever, but it is okay to make fun of foreigners because they are from another country." -Chef "South Park"
There is no such thing as a fundmentalist atheist.
And if you believe that it is not socially acceptable to show bigotry towards atheists, I suggest "acting" like one for a month. See how often you beliefs are questioned because people think you are trying to be "cool". See how often people proclaim you a "tool of Satan" and shun you. See how often you suffer physical violence and no one will help you because they believe you brought it on yourself.
Yeah, bigotry against atheists is not socially acceptable.
How many schools have sent home permission slips granting free reign to the school to do with the child as they please anyway? I know I never brought one home from school.
The Game Boy's librry wasn't all that much better. Game Gear had Sonic and it's share of puzzle games, I remember how I had to haul it around with it's massive battery pack with charger. But it came down to actual portability. The Turbo Express was also a great system with great games, but didn't have the battery power.
Yes, how dare you require me to actually read the article!
Exactly, if it leads to less cute headlines, or even better, more accurate headlines, then Thank You Google!

Google Maps does that, Google Earth does not. I'm not sure why.

Get me a $500 PC that will play every major game released in the next five years, then I'll never buy another console.
It reminds me of some really bad Trapper Keeper designs from the 80s.

Those internet urinal things used to be sold for travel in the 80s. Man, how we've digressed.
Would it have helped had he written a Limerick?
You should tell your son that Zefram Cochran won't be born until he's 34 so he can stop looking.
