Um, if something happened that would cause the US to be shut off from foriegn food supplies, my guess is oil would go hand in hand. In that case, it wouldn't matter how much food was grown domestically before the incident, there simply would not be enough energy to produce and distribute food for any significant length of time.

I cannot stress that enough. While money does not buy happiness, a certain amount does go a long way to giving you independence. 18 months ago I was a recent grad who through circumstance and stupidity(credit card debt SUCKS ASS!) found myself with a new job and $37,500 in debt. This month I will finally have a 0 net worth, and it is the best feeling ever. I have had to work a job I hate in a place I loathe simply because my debt dictated I take the best paying job I could find. I have been miserable, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and *fingers crossed* I will be entering grad school next year with a stipend and a positive net worth. I never, ever want to have to work a job simply because I desperately need the money.
Save like hell, invest wisely, and keep an emergency fund of at least 6 months handy at all time. And stay out of all debt besides a mortgage(and pay that off as soon as you can). It feels so good to be able to say "no" to a boss and not have to worry about whether or not you can make next months rent. Beats the hell out of a new plasma screen or any consumer item for that matter. I loathe Wal-Mart because I have come to despise everything it stands for. To quote Tyler Derden, "We work jobs we hate to buy shit we don't need."
Meh, manybooks.net has a ton(maybe all?) of their content formatted in Sony's book format as well as a host of others. I don't really want or need sony adding classics(they have a bunch there, but why pay when you can get it legally for free). I do want more modern books though, as I tend to split my reading 50/50 among classics and modern books. More non-fiction would especially be nice.
While daylight savings time can potentially save energy, the amount of energy it saves pales in comparison to the amount that could be saved by say banning SUVs. That little step would not annoy me in the least, but instead the government annoys the maximum number of people for the minimum amount of benefit. Brilliant.....
As the owner of one I really couldn't be happier with the device itself(the software that came with it is another story). I recently did a trans-atlantic flight and the device was a hell of a lot easier to take with me than even one book, let alone 2 or 3. Sharp display, and very readable text.
Sony's software sucks, but there are plenty of ways to get around having to use it, and they REALLY need more books in their bookstore. BTW, it costs $350USD.
You know what the nicest thing about Japanese and German television is compared to American TV? It isn't what you see(TV is pretty dumb the world over), but more of what you don't see. No ads for prescription drugs for starters(no ads for ambulance chasers either, but that is a different story). The reason drug companies patent drugs that vary little from existing drugs is because they can still make money off of them by advertising them both to patients and to doctors. Patients go in and demand the name brand of the drug they saw on TV(which further feeds into the trend of self-diagnosis, but that is another rant) and doctors who are required to get a certain amount of education every few years enroll in drug company sponsored classes. They turn a well meaning law into profit for drug companies.
If we really want to see new drugs AND get cheaper health care, banning advertisements is a good start.
I do enjoy playing with something inflatable but it's a bit different shape and you play with it in a different fashion and well....I've already said too much:P

They may not have as much bandwidth, but that doesn't mean they aren't as "fast" per se. If you are pushing around large amounts of data, then yes, the hard drive will be faster. However, if I want a page from memory(not exactly a lot of data), things can be a bit different. I first have to request the data from the hard drive, the hard drive has to spin to find the data, then deliver it to me. The latencies involved can really add up. Wheras on a flash disk, all data takes the exact same amount of time to find. So as soon as I know the address(a simple translation), I can get the data. No seeking necessary. Can save you lots of time if you do a bunch of little reads(and comparatively few writes).
According to TFA: If you have a spare U.S.B. flash drive, your PC can use it as extra main memory for a tiny speed boost.
Would that really give you that much of a speed boost over using swap? Granted most USB sticks are pretty close to random access(a hell of a lot closer than hard drives at any rate), and have decent bandwidth, but wouldn't all of a sudden popping memory out of your system cause some serious system panicks? Also would you have to clear out the stick whenever you eject it? I am curious as to how microsoft did this.
I guess I will just have to wait to see some benchmarks to see how it performs.
and yet lived to be 96 years old. Maybe there is hope for me yet :P

"capitol" != "capital". Though in this case, both are relevant.

Bush just wants to maximize his chances of winning Ed McMahon's $10 million.
