    Have you ever (I mean EVER) disclosed one of your "PASSWORDS" or god forbid "PUBLIC/PRIVATE KEY PAIRS" to ANYONE? By your flawed logic, subsequent disclosure to third parties is at the initial recipient's pleasure.

    How would you feel about your bank posting a link to your information for whoever wanted it?

    With all respect, that logic seems spurious.

    The vast majority of google's links will point to mundane, fully legal content. No reasonable judge or jury will believe Google exists as an entity solely to facilitate illegal acts.

    What percentage of P2P traffic do you suppose is legal?

    If (_if_) they can make a case that Lokitorrent was knowingly facilitating illegal filesharing, I think they are screwed.

    I'm with your line of thought here: It has to come down eventually, why not do it at _our_ pleasure rather than in one big dump?

    This is analgous to what is called a prescribed burn in forestry.- A chunk of forest is burned on purpose, under controlled conditions to limit the impact of, or prevent spontaneous burns (wildfires) later.

    The article is talking about half of a damn big mountain, so it's not like it is going to be a small job, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. My question is:

    whose government is going to pay for it?

    I think it depends on context. A pair of shoes on sale for $500 wouldn't get me too excited, even if they were really nice shoes. It's still damn expensive.
    conversely, $500 for a MAC, with warrantee, is enough to get me to buy out of curiousity. I'd love to try a MAC. At this cost, I can justify it. - or rather don't need to justify it.

    looking forward to actually seeing this advertised for sale.

    What parent is saying makes sense. At work, I don't have any games on my XP machine. The options are work, or other work. When I have a project I'm trying to get done at home though, there is always the temptation to load up my favourite fps for a little "stress relief". If I do, I rarely get back on track work-wise.

    If there is something big I want to do on my own time, I uninstall the games from my windows box first. too tempting.

    I agree.

    Why waste effort on this? Just make it a rule: Don't ever, ever buy anything from an unsolicited email. I've got the same rule for phone solicitation - If your company EVER pisses me off by calling me at supper or on my day off or whatever, I won't buy from you. period. I don't care what you're selling. I'm not interested.

    If there is no positive response, phone/email spam becomes an expense rather than a revenue generator. The 'invisible hand' of the market place will get rid of it.

    It's not just about keyboards and mice. Look at the labels for anything you buy. Especially in the big box stores, you will be _stunned_ at the percentage that comes from places with:

    i. low low labour costs
    ii. poor human rights records.

    The more of this off-shore shit we buy, the weaker our economies become while supporting questionable regimes into the bargain.

    Some stuff is damn hard to find made in your own country, (like keyboards and mice) but plenty of things _can_ be purchased domestically if you are willing to pay a few bucks more.

    If you are pissed about IT outsourcing, carry it a bit further. Read the labels the next time you're shopping and see who else is getting screwed out of a job.

    But scripting languages are what applications are made of! Right?

    I don't think it matters what you use. (compiled or script) There will be an exploit/flaw.

    You can shuck all of your PHP and write mts components in VB or even compile your server side stuff as ANSI C, but nothing is going to be perfect.

    IMHO what matters s how fast vulnerbility information is published after found and how quickly it is fixed.

    You have a point. How bout just remapping high value targets instead?

    i.e. make it look like 600 Pennsylvania ave is in.. hmmm.. How bout Belgium? or Antarctica.?
    That would thoroughly bugger up a few areas, but leave GPS functional for everyone else..

    agreed. I had nothing but good luck with NT 4.0. I think it was Microsoft's best effort to date. If they had released USB drivers and updated directx for it, I would have never bought XP.

    sk your boss about the possibility of hiring a minimum-wage intern.

    I've been an intern and my company always has a few. I think you need to tread carefully with interns/students For one, minimum wage will get you exactly what you pay for, or less. (do you really want a 1st year CS student to have admin on any of your systems?)

    Second, To be useful in most circumstances, I think you need the person to be around for more than one semester. Net result is more stress not less and decreased productivity, because of the added requirement of training someone who is essentially a tourist. If the student is only around for 4 months, they've just nicely figured out who everyone is and the basics about your company and they're gone.

    If you really have your heart set on getting interns, interview thoroughly and hire for 1 year contracts. Treat it like a 'real' hire.

    better yet, actually hire someone...

    You could teach him not to touch your computer.

    It worked for me.

    I've had small children and PCs together in the same house so long the children aren't little any more. Put the base on the desktop and bundle the cabling out of reach. When the child is old enough to start climbing, teach him/her not to. You have to teach them not to climb on onto tables, dressers, stoves etc. anyway. Just add your PC desk to the list of "no-go" zones.

    Tired people write shit code...
    I get about 6 really productive hours and then I start to slow down quickly. And forget about the deathmarch thing. If I'm in everyday for a month I turn out pure crap and not too fast, either.

    If you manage software development teams and are reading this take it to heart. Manage your projects intelligently so you don't face a big crunch at the end. deathmarch==lack of oversight
