If this is true (was the get out of antitrust card), the only answer is to use something like WSUS and collect the updates locally before they are deployed. Then compare the file check sums to ones published on multiple https sites. The keys for those sites would need to be locally verified and shared with a web of trust that is independent of the certificate authorities.

This would insure that nobody or everybody has compromised images.

The request for DNS keys seems odd. Why wasn't it a national security letter that we would never hear about?

  4. Re:Waaa, Doctor Help Me on New Superbug Weapon to Replace Failing Antibiotics · · Score: 5, Insightful

My mother was a nurse trained in the 40's. Since this was before major antibiotic use, significant training was about sanitation control. No wrist watches (since you might not wash), how to change bed sheets (to minimize airborne dust), and proper washing.

Now we have keyboards, remote controls, and all kinds of stuff that can't be cleaned. She died from an infection carried by improperly sterilized diagnostic equipment.

Today, hospital care seems to be more about pushing pills and foregoing the basics so it's no wonder we have resistant bugs.

  5. It's probably inevitable on Washington State Encourages Internet Sales Tax · · Score: 1

Collecting sales tax for multiple states will probably become a nightmare for small businesses. The way tax laws only increase in complexity, sales tax collection could easily become the most complex business process ever conceived. Is it on food? Is it on pharmaceuticals? Is it on services? ... And for what states, counties, and cities.

My zip code crosses tax jurisdictions so zip codes probably don't have enough specificity. I wonder how many thousands a month a service bureau would charge every business to provide a solution? The privacy implications for mandatory reporting of the exact location, for every purchase, would be unforgivable.

Sales tax collection, on interstate purchases, seems to be inevitable. There probably needs to be a new federal law that severely restricts the tax collection complexity.

Maybe collections should be tied to zip codes with a free rate table that would be available on salestax.gov and only changed on Jan. 1. All collections probably need to go to a single government agency for dispersal so companies don't need to file thousands of forms every month. Post an xml with zip + amount and do a single EFT.

The zip code probably needs to be the primary use location, not the ship to location. There also needs to be codes for export and resale.

Without limits, this could become a disaster.

Current financial conditions would seem to preclude any possibility of a moon base. In my opinion the out flow of money from the US and the lack of savings will likely lead to one of two situations: high tax increases or high inflation. I don't see any other way for the debt to be managed. There sure doesn't appear to be the political resolve to even address current problems.

If taxes are increased the economy will likely shut down. If we get hyperinflation, we will have retired boomers living out of cardboard boxes. Defined benefit pensions plans are history, most didn't save enough and those with 401k plans will probably be taxed at a high rate. I wouldn't be surprised to see a supplemental tax on 401k withdrawals. I'm seriously considering paying taxes now to move funds from a traditional IRA to a Roth in hopes it really won't be taxed at a ridiculous rate when it's needed.

Reducing carbon emissions will also tax industry. Who knows what will happen if the lawyers sink there teeth into companies for crimes against humanity for past emissions. There doesn't even need to be proof. Look at breast implants: years of bad press, lawsuits, bankrupted companies, and now they are OK again.

If things turn bad, it will be political suicide to spend or continue to spend money on the moon.

I turned down a job a NASA when I left college. There was just too much political uncertainty. It sure hasn't improved.

On a related issue, does anyone make a mini-sd memory chip that can store pki certificates? I would really like to store my private key where it couldn't be extracted from my Nokia E61. The inspector may have been looking at the percent fill. You are not allowed to stuff a conduit full of wire. I believe that for multi conductor cables, you need to determine the total cross section area of each cable. For more than 2, I believe the limit is 40% fill. (Check NEC Article 342).

The total number of cables will depend on the conduit type (EMT, PVC, ...) and trade size. There is also a jam ratio to worry about. A third cable can slip between two others at a bend and jam. In general just ask the AHJ. The inspectors can be very helpful. There may be lots of local rules.

There are also rules for filling cable trays.
