  1. Improvements in RFID? on Scientific American's Top 50 · · Score: 2, Informative

Everyone always talks about RFID as it is used by the end user, i.e. Wal-Mart, toll-ways, credit cards etc. However, where better improvements are really needed is on the factory floor for all the suppliers that Wal-Mart mandates must use the technology. If a vendor wants to be a supplier to Wal-Mart, they face mandates that they must tag at some level of pallet, box, item. Suppliers can do this, but it offers no value except that Wal-Mart will buy their stuff. So how do they add value? The idea is to implement the RFID tagging higher up the line into the manufacturing process so that each supplier can track their inventory as it rolls off the line, into storage, and out the dock doors onto the truck. However, current UHF RFID technology is pretty poor at integrating in the manufacturing environment. With all the metal, hot air, dust, etc. etc., the limitation of RFID is really shown. Plus, depending on your material (hmmm beverage makers? Sorry liquid is a pain to work with), the application may be near impossible to implement. Read rates are generally good, but encoding is very very difficult. Reliability is perhaps in the 90% range if you are lucky which is very bad for processes that generally require quality results in the 99% ranges. I'd like to see RFID developed so it can be used on the shop floor with high reliability and easier implementation.

  2. Confused? on Wikipedia and Plagiarism · · Score: 1

I'm confused by the concept of plagiarism on wikipedia. For example, the article describes a biography copied from a government website. Isn't the point of Wikipedia to catalog and assemble information? How is copying an openly published biography from a government website considered plagiarism? Wikipedia is not being sold. No one is taking credit for the articles. Most cases, the original info is cited anyway. Anyway, please let me know what I'm missing here (which is probably a lot).

Oh and because it's a ship, it needs lots of redundancy/backup so therefore, the 4 smaller gens are pure backup and the normal running case will only be 1-2 main gens (30-60MW).

Part of the reason I agree with the review is that I had to constantly fight my friends to play somethiner OTHER than GoldenEye. That's all I heard: "Let's play Bond! Let's play Bond!" I've played others with my friends such as timesplitters and perfect dark, but GoldenEye was the first and definately the most popular. It wasn't until Halo that I saw a console shooter more popular with my friends.

If you find a common ground with someone, i.e. you both like to go to the bar, you both like to play a sport, you both like a show, you both like etc. etc. all you have to do is ask that person/group to join you in that activity. I've had great success at integrating not only gender but racial groups in common activites such as recreational sports leagues, weekend happy hours/parties, sporting events, trips, etc. All I have to do is send out an e-mail with an invite. As nike says.. just do it.

You can probably count on this. Sony has known from the start that the best way to get ahead in the market is to ensure a wide selection of good games. This means the focus must be on attracting publishers to create these games. This focus is the main reason the Playstation was as successful as it was. If it is true that developers prefer the Sony method of "do it the way you want to" then they can look forward to more success.

The basics of the articles say that we need to sleep to convert the days memories and thoughts into long term storage and to reinforce the connections between neurons for things that were learned. Apparently the body doesn't mind so much going without sleep, but it's pretty apparent what happens to the mind if you stay awake for too long.

Of course, it's probably a combination of mind and body, but I like the explanation of recharging the mind.

Google provides many cool new services that are arguably not quite new. Google maps was beat by mapquest, yet it is better in my opinion (google earth is new and very very cool). Gmail as a mail client is not a new innovation, yet the interface is better than most free e-mail providers out there. A IM client may not be new, but it all depends on how google implements it. They are good at putting a new spin on existing concepts(was google the first to do web search?) so I'd like to see what happens.

True, the outdoors do have a different feel from indoor noisy environments. However, nature is anything but quiet. The sound of an occasional bird(my outdoor excursions have way more than occasional birds), ground underfoot(snow, leaves, and sticks make huge noises), and rustle of the wind(seems like a roar at times) are not subtle stimuli to me. In addition to these things mentioned, there's squirrels and other animals that make a racket, limbs falling and trees cracking, water rustling and roaring, etc.

Of course, this perspective on the noise of nature could be distorted by an increased sensitivity to sounds when placed in a quiet environment. I wonder what results a sound test would produce when comparing a natural setting to a well insulated room with various appliances.
