So who decides what keys can be added to the bootloader? The end user, in the case of every x86 board. Microsoft requires any system vendor to allow end users to add their own keys (either directly, or by wiping the existing keys and requiring the user to add their own and microsofts back in)
I think you and numerous other people are being intentionally blind. Note the part that I bolded and reread the sentence without any blinders. You mentioned yourself exactly WHY the problem is not fixed as you so glibly proclaim:
Microsoft requires that key management be available to the end user. Currently that is true. What about tomorrow? Five years from now? Ten years from now? The standard needs to be set up so that Microsoft or another vendor absolutely can not cause the rules to change in such a manner. Currently, those rules CAN be changed in such a manner... and Microsoft is in a position to do it, as you yourself pointed out. D'oh!
Had we let the auto companies fail, what would have been created in its place? Nothing. The expense of setting up a new car company is unbelievably expensive. All we would have gained by letting them fail was the loss of over one million jobs and the death of the American auto industry. I fail to see how that helps capitalism.
You have a good point. Taken to its logical conclusion though, it just means that those who caused the failure to begin with will not change (no penalty/feedback) and they will fail again. Does that help capitalism?
I have no objection to labeling foods that have been genetically engineered by modern techniques, but exactly how are you going to define that? I take it you do not eat corn? That is a "Biotech" food by certain definitions of the term "Biotech" (including some of the definitions used by those opposing "Biotech" foods).
Really, your argument is lying. There is a meaningful and substantial difference between breeding for characteristics and direct manipulation of genes. If people want to twist words then new words can be created so that your purposeful ambiguity is entirely eliminated.
The status of the "developer registration" will need to be periodically refreshed, as by default it expires after a month. However, it costs nothing except a trivial amount of time, and you can refresh it repeatedly.
And all that is no big deal? It is equivalent to sideloading on android? Hm. No thanks.
Then why don't they offer to distribute the vaccines themselves? Polio is quite literally a crippling disease. One that no person would willingly undergo, and yet the Taliban are making that decision for others. Children even. Absolutely despicable.
I have long thought that no nuclear plant in the US should be civilian... working in these plants ought to be a second career we offer to the best members of our nuclear navy when they choose to retire and want a stable family life at a fixed street address. Such people could not only be trusted to be fully-competent and willing to sacrifice to protect their fellow citizens, but also would be competent to defend the facility should that need ever arise.
That is an amazingly interesting idea. The US Navy has a hard time keeping the glow worms in their ranks. Having a guaranteed civilian job afterwards would be a huge motivator to stay in the Navy. The bonus of having disciplined personnel maintaining civilian reactors is also huge. A win all around. Great idea.
I can also build and own a FLAME THROWER without a license.
OMG! I just had visions of some disturbed individual running into a school with a home-built flamethrower yelling and screaming, "Your gun laws are stupid! Your gun laws are stupid!", while scores of children die an agonizingly painful death.:(
PAUSE
We should outlaw flamethrowers now! (tongue planted firmly in cheek)
Hm. A long time ago in a land far far away, I used to like listening to various forms of Heavy Metal. The stuff on the radio was just too weak and uninspiring for me but I had friends, friends who would let me me duplicate their collections.
So I would hear these various artists and go out to buy their music... but less than an hour of music costs as much as a two hour movie? I was dirt poor but I bought quite a lot of music despite the insane prices.
Then, I just stopped copying. That is what you and all the other artists want right? Well, once I stopped copying, I stopped knowing what was good or not. The prices are way way too high to experiment and get a bad album. I can only afford to buy music I like. What this means is that since I do not know what I would like, I spend nothing. I do not buy any heavy metal albums at all anymore. None.
Is this the situation that you really desire? It is the situation that strong copyright will give you. There are two players in this game: You and me. I can not control you and you can not control me. What is the best way for us to interact? I do not need you, I just enjoy you. You need me. Let the negotiations commence...
Out of the millions, perhaps tens of millions of devices being made around the world, don't you think that there might be one with that "perfect frequency?"
ROFLMAO.
Short answer: No.
Long answer: No. Anything that outputs enough RF to interfere with other electronics is regulated by the FCC. Even harmonics and subharmonics will be accounted for or else it can not be sold. Furthermore, if there were a way to bring down airplanes via RF, someone would already be intentionally doing it so consumer electronic gadgets should not even be on your most remote list of worries. lol
Weird. My son's iPhone 2 and my wife's iPhone 3GS both seemed to work as good as any of my Android based phones on T-Mobile's network in the USA. Am I missing something here?
It's because somebody (not you) is paying for actual, trained reporters to investigate issues and write things.
I logged in just to laugh out loud about this statement.
The last investigation that I saw a reporter do was a BBC radio reporter about the obscene rise in rice prices back in 2008. I do not even recall ever seeing any serious reporting before (I was too young to notice Nixon) that report or since that report. Fuck 'em. Let the "news" outlets burn. When they start doing serious journalism again, I will stop laughing at your statement.
I am of the opinion that there are less than a dozen other planets with advanced life on them in this "portion" of the galaxy. I am not entirely convinced that life was possible any earlier in this portion and that is why we do not see any other space faring civilizations yet. We, meaning all of the planets with life forms, are in a massive race to see who will be the dominant life form in this portion of the galaxy and we seem to be doing fairly well in advancing so far.
I do wonder about other "portions" of the galaxy. Are they able to support an environment with advanced life forms or are supernovas too near and too common closer to the center of the galaxy? Being out near the edge in an arm that is not very dense seems to be quite the advantage so far.
The USA has resorted to buy everything imported, since their consumers would rather whine about quality than pay for it.
I hate to be too rude, but go fuck yourself. It was not consumers that decided, it was the business owners trying to squeeze a few extra dollars of profit and forcing the crap quality stuff down our throats.
If I have $200 to spend on shoes, would i be better off buying 4 pairs at $50 or 1 pair at $200? Considering that the 1 pair will likely outlast those 4 pairs and will be far more comfortable, I am going to spend the $200 on the one pair. I have that choice in shoes currently, but not for most other products.
A lot of our healthcare issues boils down to the entitlement mentality and shoving the burden of support on others without just compensation.
Pardon me? I have to pay $10k of a $14k medical bill when my son broke his wrist because I have a fucking entitlement mentality and want others to support me? Exactly WHO is getting all of this free medical care that they are not entitled to? It sure as fuck is not me.
If Thunderbird incorporated the equivalent of Enigmail from the start, lots of people would be using it now.
Microsoft Outlook already supports it. I do not see the masses moving towards encryption. What with getting and maintaining certificates and all, it is a hassle.
If linux had encryption built into the OS
Hrm. It depends on what you consider the OS. There are encryption routines that are part of the kernel. I have yet to see a Linux distro without OpenSSL available (a veritable swiss army knife of encryption routines).
If you think all that is missing is an interface, feel free to write one, it is NOT hard. Honestly, the issue is deeper than you seem to realize.
Want to use gmail or hotmail? Go ahead, but you can not encrypt without yourself and the recipient using a program external to the browser. Want to encrypt your sessions to a server? Convince the server operator to turn on encryption (if the application even supports it).
Instead of wailing and gnashing of teeth, how about we actually solve the problem?
No. *We* (you and I) can not solve the problem. Encryption is readily available. Laziness, inertia, and some pressure from the governments of the world are all that is necessary to keep it from gaining mass acceptance.
But everyone was worried about the latest Linux build, who is suing who, or Kim Kardashian's ass...
Yes, yes. and everyone who actually was worried about it was an overly paranoid schizoid.
There is no way to win with you negativity guys. Everything is just so perfectly fucked up and nobody cares or cares too much. There are no fucking real people in this world, we are all just cardboard cutouts here to fit into your world in whatever way is most convenient for you.
Maybe the NSA is just hiding public opinion from you so you can not perceive that other people actually did care but were powerless to do anything about it?
But then, you are another jackass who puts part of their message in the subject. Here, you can read the rest of this comment ove
Sure, they have been capturing everything for a very very long time. Even before the internet was running, they were listening in on all phone conversations. There is not enough analytical power to make use of it. The danger comes in when they are targeting you but you can spout off on all sorts of shit before then and it will not trigger anything.
I used to work for a company called SAIC, Science Applications International Corporation. The employment contract that I signed with them was perfectly fair and reasonable. If I did anything using any of their resources, they owned it. If I did anything with my own resources, I owned it. I was surprised because I expected the whole "all your base" crap. Needless to say, I signed without any misgivings. Cheers.
This comes from the same mentality as people who skip vaccinating their children: we have a generation who grew up taking things for granted, so they feel free to reject the very things that gave them that privilege. Grow up without being surrounded by disease, and it feels safe to throw away vaccines. Grow up taking an educated populace for granted, and it feels safe to throw away college.
Insightful, but wrong. Nobody is talking about throwing away college. People are talking about requiring college for employment. College should essentially be free, and yes, I am willing to pay the taxes required for it.
Re:Did Zuckerberg ever have to get past HR?

Just Say No To College

I'd also like to judge people on their ability to think, to listen to others, research existing knowledge, to appraise and weight up ideas, and this is a large part of what college teaches.
It would be nice if having a college degree was any sort of indicator towards possessing those qualities. Just because a person made it through college and has been exposed (in theory) to those things, it does NOT mean that they actually have any of those qualities.
lol?

Damn. Wish I had mod points. You have made a seriously insightful comment.
LOL, heya OT. I just noticed (when I hit preview) it was you that you made this comment.
Where does it all end?
It doesn't?
Why is anyone targeting 32 bit in this day and age? The inertia is absurd.

Me. Everyone is crazy. The interesting question is in what way/s you or anyone else is crazy.
