"I wonder if people are aware that Oklahoma still practices strict alcohol prohibition?"
Huh?? *takes another shot of chilled vodka* WTF?...You smokin' plumber's crack or something?
We may have some strange zoning laws, and stupid laws restricting alcohal sales after certain times on Sunday (local laws and ordinances-YMMV depending on town/county), but I've never been to anyplace in Oklahoma that prohibited alcohal.
And yes, I live in OK...Stillwater, and we have 5 liqour stores that I'm aware of, and all the convience and grocery stores sell beer (anything over 3.2% alcohal have to get from the liqour store).
Because "Rape, Pillage, and Burn" is a time honored concept in our society for centuries past for those gaining in power (just like a "pirate attack"). Thus the "piracy"(which pirates also contributed to Rape, Pillage, and Burn policy) which is being associated with copyright infringement has to carry the same or worse penalties as actual piracy no matter how outmoded the concept.
So, it's only fair that so called "pirates" nowdays get to rape AND infringe on copyrights with the same impunity (or lack of) as their ancestors...oh yeah, don't forget Pillage and Burn while Raping during copyright infringing...it's all the same!
P.S. for the pedantists out there: It's not PC (Personal Computer) to confuse Pirates(http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/index.js p?c_id=pit) with REAL pirates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate).
It would be incomplete to attribute this model to only the MPAA...Don't forget the RIAA, or collecively as the **AA. Note there are TWO "*" in the acronymn, and should not be confused with any other organisations other than "MPAA or RIAA". (any other solution is not PC (politically correct), IMHO.
Let the piracy begin....w00t! for Rape, Pillage, and Burn...bedamned about NewAge "refinements" on our language....comfort bedamned also.
Serious note:"The penalty for copying a DVD can be higher than the penalty for commiting rape; how can we, as a society, justify that?" Blame it on Star Trek: Next Generation, that's where the Ferengi evolved and was noticed by "our society"(ie:marketing/advertising)...Profits Come First, humanity and mankind come in second.
Face it: you can't pick up a magazine, visit a web page, watch TV, rent a DVD, etc., without some kind of extraneous marketing getting in your face.
Why yes, I only post when drunk...but social constructs limit my ability to pose my opinions in an effective way.
Bass-Ackward approach to the problem. try this: You've maximized the concept of leveraging available forces to increase marketshare and viability of product line by eliminating conflicting problems in in the present infrastructure thereby streamlining personel requirements for the project to be completed for a positive Return On Investment without extending budget requirements. This will not only get you a raise, but your chances of advancement up the corporate elevator (ladders are SO last century!) will be maximized with a suitable PowePoint Presentation.
Damn, I should probably charge for these n00b PHB lectures!
The insistance of the Windows logo only means (to me)that they have not yet figured out burning a *nix distro.iso to disc and rebooting the PC.
"When you can pluck the *nix distro.so from the net, burn it to disc and install, you will be on the way to freedom...outside of the Gates,Bill...remember this, Grasshopper. Only when you can pass through the Gates,Bill and piss on Steve Balmer's chairleg will you be truly free to practise your 133t skilz"
I should have tested that link first. I lost track of what was happening with Windows when WGA insisted my retail copy of XP Pro was pirated.... Kubuntu for the WIN!!!
Try going to "www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance /fastboot/bootvis.mspx" Download, install, shut down all possible background tasks, start bootvis. 1.Go to the "Trace" menu> activate "Next Boot + Driver Delays" 2.Follow the prompts to let the system reboot by itself. 3.Once rebooted, wait until the bootvis screen pops up- it will be a box with charts and text reports, take your time exploring this- a lot of info (pop-ups with detailed info will pop-up when you rest your mouse curser on info) is in here. 4.Go back to the "Trace" menu>activate "Optimize System"; this will reboot the PC and rearrange the sequence of driver, process, and programs loading to give the best boot times with WinXP.
It's been 3-4 years since I messed with this or I would give better directions. Basically it will do some kind of scan, ask you to leave it running while you reboot, it will load first and scan the bootup, then offer you a report, both text and graphical charts showing your bottlenecks and then offering to "optimise" the bootup sequence of drivers and other startup items. I remember getting between 5-30% improvements, YMMV. Hope this helps.

I have never seen any research or data on this question you bring up. Usually, something this far from "Mainstream Public Awareness" never gets studied unless someone with vested interest in the specific topic is interested in pursuing the subject, and has enough influence to make it happen.
(Disclaimer: my awareness of research is NOT all encompassing!!!)
The answers you are looking for have probably not been addressed, if they have been- not public knowledge. It may have been addressed by the Humane Society, or the SPCA, but if so, has remained fairly quiet.
Hate to say it, but even tho' "man's best friend" is man's best friend, the dog is still considered a domesticated beast to serve us; Thus only to be considered on a "how useful to us" basis.
My experience with K-9's (Police Dogs and US Military MP's) suggest several things:
1. The handlers/partners usually have the dogs as family pets in addition to being their work partner. This may limit overall what the dogs get exposed to compared to all human teams doing the same job.
2. The dogs have REALLY sensitive olofactory organs- if it's too "strong", they will keep their distance and "point" to indicate a detection or hit.
3.Uhmm... they're not immune to "specialized training":(http://yro.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid =185460&cid=15305486)
4. A lot of this has been covered here:(http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/05 /10/2331237&from=rss)
5. Mostly, if it's not considered hazardous for the human handlers, then it's not considered hazardous for the "k-9"'s on the same duty.
I doubt that the issues you are adressing have been fully thought about...I commend you, and feel slightly ashamed that I have not thought about this.
You have a very valid point. 'make' and 'make install' only works when the source code and makefiles are available. This is the big chasm between the different types of software licenses.
If it was an ideal world....I could (for example) write original code for some software app, provide the source code to compile for any OS, and still sell it to make a living writing software code. For this to work, human nature would have to change drastically from the present. I don't see this happening soon.
I have some issues with the whole IP, copyright, and patent situation; but I have no good solution. On one hand, you have those professionals that devote a lot of time, training. and energy to give us stuff like Doom, Halo, Battlefield 1942, etc.- if they didn't get paid to do this....imagine the loss. (insert favorite games/app's here)
On the other hand...the propriatary market (not providing source to compile) inhibits ease of installing no matter what OS. For example: I want Duke Nukem Forever for my Kubunto Drapper box and my wife's Win XP box- I either buy the game cd/dvd which has the source (one cd/dvd for each box), download the source and compile (for each box), or whatever (for each box), but:
1.Don't need the cd/dvd to play run the app after install.
2.Has no restrictions or distinctions between hardware or virtual machines.
3.Is fair to the writer/developer of the app, and a setup that encourages more, more, more!
4.Is user friendly, and has good man pages/documentation.
5.It all works with standard or +standard hardware; and freely available drivers for hardware. (I'm talking to you ATI!)
Yeah, I'll keep dreaming....but in a perfect world........
"They'll just leave the problem solving to someone else."
Uhmmm...No.
Sen. Ted "The Tubes" Stevenson is all over the 'internets' with his trucks. And he STILL is not getting his internets on a timely basis, but he'll keep those trucks humpin' up the tubes!
Your solution would effectively cut out the distributer/label with the current model. Any other effective model would require a complete paradigm shift in the distribution/control aspect; this is what the RIAA and MPAA are worried about- distribution rights as a business model, and they have lots of cash to throw at our lawmakers to help keep that outmoded business model viable.
I completely agree with you, but until the money involved changes drastically, this is what we are stuck with.
Some things can be done, as in supporting indie's from their direct sales (thus bypassing the RIAA), supporting inie filmakers that put their stuff up for download, make your own, etc. Admittedly, this is a limited option, but keep in mind how quick youtube.com, google.com, etc. grew.
The 'people' or John Q. Public can be a powerful force occasionally.

I think it's all according to what you are used to.
I teach Firearms Safety and Marksmanship, and have found that the n00bs usually do much better than the 133t bunch. With the n00bs, you don't have to break bad/inefficient habits, but it's at the same time tough to break out of the mold when you are accustomed to a certain concept.
After making a cheat sheet for translating functions between photoshop (5.0 w/ Win 98 I think) and Gimpshop, that did not seem too steep of a learning curve.

Have you patented that process yet?
