For those who didn't actually read tfp or another article, here's a quote from the original post that was relayed on Ars Technica:
"We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending," he explained. "We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online patch, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it."
Take note of the nice easter egg they left in for Nintendo to find:
The Twilight Hack Song --------- This was a triumph. I'm making note here: HACKED AGAIN. It's hard to overstate our satisfaction.
Team Twiizers We do what we must because we can. For the good of all of us, except the ones who pirate. But there's no sense crying over every quick plug. We just keep on trying while there's still one more bug. And the homebrew comes back, and we make a neat hack. For the people whose Wiis want new life.
I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now. Even though they broke the hack and patched it. And fixed IOS30. And broke every fake signed disc out there. As they failed it hurt because... They were attacking homebrew! Now these quick hack fixes have some beautiful holes, So we found them fast and easily met our goals. And I'm glad we got burned. Think of all the things we learned. For the people whose Wiis want new life!
Go ahead and patch it. I think I'd like to have some fun. Maybe you'll find an undisclosed bug. Maybe that huge one. That was a joke, haha, fat chance! Anyway, this homebrew's great. It's also legal to use. Look at me still talking, when there's hacking to do. It might take three months, but they'll patch this one too. I've experiments to run, there's reversing to be done. On the people whose Wiis want new life.
And believe me the Wiis want new life! I'm busy hacking and they want new life. I feel FANTASTIC and they'll get new life. While you're dying they'll still be alive. And when you're dead they'll still have some life. STILL ALIVE,
I don't know about that, but what I do know is that in a capitalist system a Lawyer can get paid a lot of money for arguing that his client is right no matter what:)
You don't have to think you're right to argue it in court.
There's so many interesting numbers that could come out of this, and they'd all say something about file sharing, etc.
They should have asked downloaders some questions as a requirement. "Have you heard of Radiohead before?/Have you purchased a Radiohead album before?" "Would you have downloaded/purchased this music if it was not available for free?"
Then you get numbers representing how many SALES are truthfully LOST to file sharing vs. how many FANS are MADE by file sharing.
Also, I recall Trent Razor (Sorry if it's misspelled, no idea who he is) talking about paying for Radiohead's album. He said he paid $5000. Now it would be a little weird for him to just "donate" $5000 to the band, but he has enough money that he can support the band in this way if he believes they deserve it. People are able to support the artist as much as they see fit/are able to spare. Quite a good system, in my opinion. It's a convenient form of donation.
Mr. Zemlin didn't make that quote. Note the lack of quotation marks.
That's just commentary put in the writeup by whoever submitted it.
And frankly, it's very misleading. This isn't the only modded-up comment on that line.
It _IS_ a joke
Definitely agree with you here. Purging after three months is basically just a Cost-of-storage Vs. Usefulness-of-information issue. You still have a three month log of thousands of citizens' activities. It's not "perfect privacy," and it's not any more private than a 6 month log.
What they don't mention is that just about every new processor they're releasing (or dropping prices on) comes with their new "Trusted eXecution Technology" built in.
This will be the on-die partner of Trusted Platform Module, which is already built into motherboards of this generation.
From Wikipedia:
Trusted Execution Technology (TET or TXT), formerly known as LaGrande Technology is a key component of Intel's initiative of "safer computing" . Intel claims that it will be very useful, especially in the business world , as a way to defend against software-based attacks aimed at stealing sensitive information. Although commonly advertised by Intel as security technology, the Free Software Foundation claims that it can also be used to enable development of more advanced, tamper-resistant forms of DRM, and can be abused to achieve vendor lock-in.

Personally, I'm going to avoid this technology if I possibly can.
Advertising to a bunch of people leading fake lives is pretty lame.
I don't really see any defending either side in a fight like this. It looks like a bad idea all around. It's profiteering off of purely virtual content. You pay for nothing. You pay for your advertising as virtually nothing
Unfortunately, it's likely that we will be feeling the need to upgrade to Vista within a few years.
I think more effort needs to be taken to show that we don't want things like this.
Can anyone say "boycott Vista?"
It's too bad OEM sales are doing so well though.
I agree.
CMYK is really just three colors with an extra factor just to adjust what is essentially brightness. Sounds like exactly what this extra pixel is doing.
So they've brought CMYK to cameras. Finally. Real life isn't VGA computer monitors. RGB isn't really that advanced.
The uninformed journalism doesn't help it at all. "The district removed him for playing a violent computer game that looks a lot like his school." "The student created a video game from his home computer."
Neither of those sentences accurately describe what he did.
On the subject of Video Card RAM, the added onboard memory makes Little to No difference. (See Radeon X600 Pro 256/128 and 6200 TC32/64)
As long as your card has at least 128MB onboard, it's not going to choke from memory problems.
Quite frankly, alot of retail stores track the serial numbers they receieve, and will be able to look up when they are sold.
Also, many stores keep security tapes. Even if you pay in cash, they will be able to show your face/physical build to the cops from the security tape.
Heck, alot of stores make you give a name and phone number before they sell you anything. I know my store ALWAYS asks for one, and an address (although nothing is mandatory)
I can find a few projects a little closer to home that can do the exact same thing:
One:
http://www.ipp2p.org/
Two:
http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/
I use full encryption on my bittorrent sessions, and it hasn't stopped my router from correctly categorizing every single connection.

It's all about the Wiibrator, baby.
This is what came to mind for me. I totally believed it, too.
Not anymore! Microsoft probably submitted this article.

At most, you gain the illusion of privacy.

Make a security claim so wild that every hacker will buy your product to try to crack it. $$$$

This is soo not a troll. Should be modded funny, in my opinion.
Or at least about their accessories. Or some site reviewing them. Or the claim of bipartisanism. Or Slashdot. Oops.
AFAIK, "Interdictor" is just an anagram for DirectNIC, +tor. I don't know what the tor is for, but I doubt there's much deeper meaning to his name.

WMV, bad thinking!
More like a half-an-hour wait after the show came on for it to be released on bittorrent.
Innovators, innovators, innovators, innovators!
