Apple and Andorid are reinventing the way we look at software, "Apps" to be specific. Who knows where it will really take us - sure desktop software is a different ballgame than mobile, but what are people using more of? Our main "Software" of use has been the web browser as of late (For a majority of people) as well as word processors. Beyond those, what percentage of people use 2-3 other desktop applications?

How many mobile apps do they use?

As someone that writes mobile apps, the process is frustrating. We are seeing a mass dumbing down of the already dumb consumer. Everyone now expects all software to cost $0.99 - be feature packed, and work flawlessly. As anyone that develops software knows, "pick two of those."

  5. Oh please, what a lame title on Apple Patents Remotely Disabling Jailbroken Phones · · Score: 3, Insightful

'unauthorized usage' means a lot of things. It *could* mean jailbroken, but - to those with a brain - it means the ability to remote wipe your phone, find it if it is stolen, etc. Remote wipe is crucial on the enterprise. While I question the validity of the patent (how long has RIM had remote wipe?), the actions are valid. Jailbreaking is legal, there is nothing Apple can do to that, so get over it.

There is no need to create "political" action in the case of EULAs, Google, etc - you simply don't use their service - seeing as they "play games" with their terms as you describe it as.

The next year will be the "year of android" but Apple needs to tee up a home run next year (Unless there are unannounced features for the 4th generation iPhone).

Hopefully the iPhone will see some sort of "Services" architecture like Android's SDK - as a developer that is the real "Multitasking" that needs to take place.

Then again, anyone that knows a good thought out design will save dividends in the long run. But hey, what do us code monkeys know. It is rarely taught in school and if you are lucky enough to work with someone that understands the design process - you will benefit immensely.

People go to college because it is the next step and it is required to get a "Professional" job. I can barely recount the actual classes I took that were outside my major, so very well rounded.

Going thousands of dollars into debt so you can have a "well rounded education" is a farce.

It still drives me up the wall how much cash I blew for my undergraduate CS degree. Looking at what I "learned" from my classes and what I taught myself in that period of time, I would have been much better off to have saved the $80K I spent on schooling and self taught. Professors even mocked me for the C# books I was reading when it was still in beta, years later *THAT* pays my bills, in dividends. (We can discuss how bad of a language it is in another thread, just the fact the professors couldn't see through the trees).

While college was a great experience, it is far from something everyone should go to. The fact that many businesses require degrees anymore is just plain stupid.

Is it a "power" device - No, it isn't. But, it fits a niche. It sent HP and Microsofts attempts at reinventing the tablet into a tailspin and caused them to be scrapped. But what niche will the iPad fill? I have one and love it, for a few reasons - but I see it more of a device for my grandparents. They have no real need for a computer and its power. They want to send email, check pictures, and that is about it. Why should the spend $70 a month on Cable Internet when they can spend $15 on 3G for the iPad? The iPad and the Ink have potiental to become great thin clients as well. Years ago I was looking at the Tough Book "Notepad" thin clients, they were $2000+ EACH and were nothing more than a Citrix client. We shall see. The tablet market has been reinvented. It will be interesting to see what Android vaporware will come out, I'll love to grab one when it finally does.
