    Most extended warranty contracts gurantee replacement costs. I don't know specifically about your contract, but I would imagine they had a half way intelligent lawyer that stated in the contract that "comprable" was to their discretion.

    Now, given that, it's up to them to decide if 2 pounds of weight is enough of a differance to warrant upgrading your PC. I've personally gone through the whole "fight for all you can on warranty" thing but you can't expect to get 100% of the features in a 100% match. Some features will be better, (screen, hard-drive, cpu); others may not exist (ir port, weight, etc..).

    In short, get over it. If you absolutely must have the extra's; pay for them. Otherwise appreciate that the rip-off warrently actually was worth something this time.

    I've actually listened to a guy's spiel and then when he was through complimented him on his speaking abilities and lied and told him I was the manager of a call burea in the NC area and asked if he'd like to move.

    It was fun - wasted about 20 minutes of the guys time - found out how low of an income they were making etc.

    Actually this might not be as far fetched. Glass is basically "organized" silicon (I think, if I'm remebering right) so it wouldn't be that far-fetched to tag some silicon strands onto AL and have your nice little aquarium.

    One thing that sites, such as Slashdot could do would be to turn into $lashdot and start having glowing reviews of product endorsements in a seperate sections with text on the top and bottom.

    This would not be a good idea at the present time but would be reasonable if the advertiser's banners dried up. Just as long as it's not too intrusive.

    but it's actually a security feature (yeah I know - two sides of the coin).

    I'm running an internal web server where I'm hosting a bunch of file:// links which point to source code that are on servers within our company. IE follows these links just fine. Mozilla refuses to acknowledge them. Researching it finds that it's because of a shell security issue.

    Now, does anyone know of a why to alleviate this problem or at least to do it for intranet ip's?

    ( I would send a question to AskSlashdot but lately they only seem to get the ones where the people don't do the google research first so it's no use ).

    Alas poor Yorrick, the problem you're making in using the Tivo as a comparison is that often cheap electronic goods are subsidized by subscription services (I know TIVO is). I suspect most cable boxes etc are.

    DVD players on the other hand have been accused of being dumped on the US market so it's questionable if you're really paying full cost. (Either you're paying less or only pennies above the actual cost).

    Actually, when Social Security #'s first came out it was supposadly just for use in the Social Security program and the law read that way. Later, the law was loosened up to allow govermental and other uses and that's when we all got screwed.

    The only problem with his code 'tho is the initial jpeg display that pops up runs the virus which then consumes your system before you get a chance to run his tool to protect against jpeg's that are in your system so that you can run tools to protect your systems against things like that.

    Actually, a web based browser isn't such a bad idea - think about it for a sec.

    Develop a low cost cheap display mechanism that communicates over modems or tcp/ip (ie: high speed) and that only communicates to one service.

    That one service would then have their own software running a browser, email, search engine etc.

    Things that make you say, hmmmmm....

    Consider that Microsoft may reasonably be looking after their own self-interest. In this case, I think it may be fair for them to try and prevent individuals outside of Sun to incorporate something into OpenOffice that is owned by them. I don't see it as a "pre-emptive" strike but merely a reservation of rights. Sun is still free to utilize what they wish for SunOffice - they just can't distribute it back to the open source community.

    This is not a troll. I don't like Micro$haft but I don't see this as the evil, bad thing everyone else says it is.

    What it will eventually boil down to is, how do they utilize (if they do) this provision?

    One experiance I had, similair to the parent post, was when I worked for a contract company which shall remain nameless.

    They decided to do a "charity" project and surveyed serveral local charities to see if any of their IT needs could be filled.

    At the initial meeting, some questions on the project came up and I asked, "Why don't we consult with the users to see what's best for them?"

    I got laughed at and told that the project wasn't for charity but was instead to develop our skills in certain areas.

    Needless to say I shied away from the project and didn't help futher.

    The end project, from what I've heard, was just that - a bunch of code that really didn't fufill the users needs but was good for bragging rights on resumes.

    If you do a whois on lindos.com it'll show up as Lindows owning the domain name... I wouldn't be too suprised if they really do use Lindos.

    Using the "because it's the W that is causing all the problems" would be asking for trouble but otherwise lindos sounds just as good to me, infringment wise, as Aidios (old computer gaming company).

    Google returned the following page when I searched for his name and CPA: http://www.dca.ca.gov/cba/discipline/bi-bz.htm

    It turns out that it's a .gov address so if it's incorrect according to the article then somebody screwed up elsewhere, not google.

    Google does not attest to the validity of statements on each web site; they merely index them. I don't think the guy has a clue, or a case.
